ICYMI, Seattle rapper/producer Spekulation (aka Matt Watson) dropped "Uncle Ike" on 4/20. (We're late telling you about it, because cannabis... hahahah [dies in a coughing fit].) It's the lead single from Spek's new album, Nines to Fives & Afterlives, which comes out June 16).

The musically poignant and portentous song highlights the injustice and irony of a high percentage of people of color getting busted for engaging in the same activity that Central District pot shop Uncle Ike is doing in the very neighborhood to whose gentrification it's contributing.

Spek also lodges complaints about the increased police presence in the neighborhood and Uncle Ike's high prices. Some key lines from the track: "You need green, he got plenty in all amounts/But we won't give him a penny/Instead we call him out"; "You might feel safe, but hope they don't pull you over/They've lowered the legal limit for what they consider sober"; "Uncle Ike would like to lock up friends, family, and neighbors/It's a source of free labor for this nation of slavers." On his Soundcloud, Spek writes: "All proceeds from the sale of this single go to Seattle Black Book Club, an organization focused on passing retroactive marijuana laws and building defense funds for people of color facing drug charges."
