If you haven't yet, read Matt Baume's piece about why Assassins is a perfect musical to watch right now. Not only did last night's presidential debate make me want to scream and kill people, particularly people with presidential ambitions, it made me very much in the mood to go to the theater and hear from, say, John Wilkes Booth about why he killed Lincoln. As Matt points out in his piece, "Make America Great Again" would have been a perfect slogan for John Wilkes Booth.

I hate to dismiss all men with a single gesture, but you know who's really good in Assassins? The two women in the photo above, both of whom tried to kill Gerald Ford and both of whom failed. Kassebaum had me rolling in the aisles with her comedic brilliance. I don't think I will ever get it out of my head. Likewise, Griffith is no slouch in the acting department, and as I have documented before, she's an unbelievable singer.

Louis Hobson, who plays John Wilkes Booth and sings like crushed angels, is good too, as are almost all the other principals. It's a great production. There are lots of gunshots in it. And there's no intermission. There whole thing is just a straight shot. It's dark and creepy and funny and eerily relevant. Go.
