The Social Justice Film Festival opens on Saturday with Invitation to Dance, a 90-minute documentary about Simi Linton, a “wheelchair-riding social activist” who lives and teaches in New York City. Linton, who lost use of her legs in the early '70s as a result of an automobile accident, provides the audience with a view of the city and architecture from the perspective of a wheelchair rider. One of the best moments in the documentary is when she shows how a curving ramp at the front of the Frank Gehry–designed Walt Disney Concert Hall is a nightmare for those who use it. From the perspective of the wheelchair, the ramp is a tunnel. Clearly, the last thing the architect had in mind when he designed the ramp was its users. There are lots of other interesting docs and shorts in this festival, which runs until October 30. (CHARLES MUDEDE)
