I was walking to work this morning up Pike Street, daydreaming about hot coffee and fresh peaches and sun and mole cancer. I see a man coming in the opposite direction, so I automatically scoot over to my side of the sidewalk and then, just as we're passing each other, I hear him whisper:

"Nice tits."

And I froze. For a second I was confused—did one of them fall out or something?—but no, an automatic check confirmed that my breasts were still firmly tucked away under three layers of clothing. That guy just had the urge to harass and demean me, and so he did. I froze, so he won. By the time my anger kicked in and I turned around to shout something at him—anything to regain a sense of control over the situation—he'd crossed the street and was turning a corner.

Of course, all women have stories of being harassed. All of them. This isn't even a particularly heinous example—my friends and coworkers have stories of having their boobs grabbed on the street, having their asses grabbed, even being followed onto buses and then home. This just sucked because it ruined my day. My brain has been derailed from thinking about important things—milkshakes, work—to replaying a second-long interaction on loop and wishing that I had the perfect response for that anonymous fuck.

The worst part is, I feel like I failed myself. I'm a pretty loud, mouthy woman and it was crippling to have my brains and my mouth both quit on me at such a crucial time. And that's the point of harassment, isn't it? To make someone feel helpless and disempowered?

So how do other women prepare themselves for verbal and physical harassment that could come from anyone, anywhere, at any time? I've been asking around! After the jump one of my female coworkers explains a tactic that's worked for her and her mother: Acting batshit.

Here's what she wrote to me in an email:

My favorite story, actually, is something that happened to my mom when she was still in high school. She was walking home from a friend's house one night through a quiet neighborhood and got cruised by a car full of older guys (probably in their twenties) who started hooting at her, telling her she was a "hot piece" and asking her if she needed a ride home. She put her head down and ignored them but got worried when she heard the car coming back around the block and realized the guys were coming back to either continue harassing her or possibly escalate the situation.

She stopped right under the streetlight closest to her, pulled out her compact and her lipstick, and proceeded to start smearing it all over her face while looking in the mirror, smiling a terrible smile. The driver stopped right next to her and one of the guys asked her if she'd ever been with a man before. She looked up at him, face covered in lipstick with that insane smile pasted on, and they all recoiled in horror. "She's fucking crazy," the driver said, and they drove away.

I ended up in a similar situation a few years ago late on a Saturday night when I had parked like 12 blocks away from a show at Rebar. I was walking uphill on Howell when a contingent of five VERY drunk, fairly muscle-y tourist guys from Florida stopped me to ask for directions to 13 Coins.

I started to tell them how to get there and one of the guys grabbed onto my arm. "You should come with us!" he said, and the other guys agreed. I tried pulling my arm out of his grip and it tightened. The guys were really drunk. Their faces were weirdly contorted. Suddenly, I felt dumb for not carrying pepper spray. I remembered my mom's story and decided to follow in her footsteps.

"I can't," I told them, "I've got a date in the morning."

"Bullshit!" said one of the guys, who seriously had a crewcut and was wearing JEAN SHORTS. "We're your date," said the guy holding onto my arm.

"Well," I smiled up at him and stopped struggling, "You seem like VERY nice guys and it would be SO FUN to hang out with you. But tonight is Saturday and in the morning I have a very special date with Jesus Christ."

The guy immediately let go of my arm. One of them who either hadn't heard or didn't care started towards me. "WAIT!" I said, smiling brightly, "YOU guys should come with ME! Have you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Personal Savior? He's a very good friend."

Turns out they did not want to have breakfast with Jesus.

I've told that story in the past as some kind of anecdote about how clever I am, but the fact is that those guys were potentially dangerous not just to me, but to every female in their path. Would they have actually turned out to be RAPISTS? I don't know. I never will. But in many cases, women and girls get raped by guys who were just showing off for their friends or had too many drinks or some other horribly casual circumstance that converts a "normal guy" to a murdering rapist.

I regret not pushing that guy who gripped my arm into oncoming traffic. That might seem overly hostile, but he probably would have survived getting hit by a car and maybe they would all learn a valuable lesson about not grabbing perfect strangers on the street at night.

On a lighter note, fervent Christianity appears to have the same Testosterone-dissolving effect as insanity. The more you know.....

Sometimes—not every time, mind you, but sometimes—the best way to demonstrate how a piece of art is sexist is by employing an equal amount of sexism in the other direction. The story of Bro-sie the Riveter is an example of a time when that tactic worked perfectly.

This Is What Most Abortion Clinics Used to Be Like

You know those gruesome old stories about back-alley abortions, from way back before Roe v. Wade made abortion legal and safe? They looked somewhat like this:

A Philadelphia jury on Monday convicted abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell on three counts of murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of three babies and one adult patient at his inner-city clinic. The case, which revealed horrific conditions at Gosnell’s practice as well as gruesome details about the illegal operations he performed there, became a flashpoint in the national debate about abortion.

So-called "pro-lifers" are attempting to use the Gosnell case as an argument for tightening restrictions on abortion, but experience tells us that would only create more Gosnells. In addition to the murder charges, Gosnell was convicted of dozens of counts of performing medically unjustified late-term abortions beyond Pennsylvania's 24-week limit. Gosnell's practice wasn't just alleged to be unsanitary, unsafe, and unqualified—much of it was determined to be illegal. As this case shows, criminalizing abortion—even late-term abortion—does nothing to reduce demand; instead, it just drives desperate women to seek ever more desperate options.

That was America's experience before Roe v. Wade, and that is the experience repeated in countries throughout the world. Indeed, a recent study in the Lancet reports that the abortion rate is actually lower in the jurisdictions with the most liberal abortion laws: "Restrictive abortion laws are not associated with lower abortion rates," the study finds, a conclusion entirely consistent with past research. In the US, legal abortions remain remarkably safe, with only a handful of maternal deaths out the approximately one million abortions performed each year. But worldwide, 47,000 women still die each year from unsafe abortions, accounting for 13 percent of all maternal deaths. That is the reality that US pro-lifers would return us to.

Clinics like Gosnell's are rare. If they weren't, this case wouldn't have been so sensational. But if pro-lifers have their way, it will once again become the norm.

[ Comment on this story ]

Holy shit, this is great news, via Reuters:

A federal judge in New York on Friday declined to temporarily halt a court order directing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make emergency contraception available over the counter to girls of all ages.

... [U.S. District Judge Edward] Korman ordered the FDA on April 5 to lift age and point-of-access restrictions on all levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception, also known as the "morning-after" pill or "Plan B," to prevent unwanted pregnancies. The FDA has appealed that ruling.

"In my view, the defendants' appeal is frivolous and taken for the purposes of delay," Korman wrote in Friday's decision.

In less great news, Judge Korman gave the FDA until May 13 to ask a federal appeals court to stay the order, which prolongs this fight into next week.

But! In terms of satisfying public humiliation, Judge Korman declared in his Memorandum and Order that Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius decision to block young women's access to the time-sensitive drug was "politically motivated, scientifically unjustified, and contrary to agency precedent" and "so unpersuasive as to call into question her good faith."

The Order also calls the Obama administration's argument "largely an insult to the intelligence of women."

Man oh man, I'm going to be basking in the glow of Judge Korman's scathing words all day.

An Air Force brochure on sexual assault advises potential victims not to fight off their attackers.

“It may be advisable to submit [rather] than resist,” reads the brochure (.pdf), issued to airmen at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, where nearly 10,000 military and civilian personnel are assigned. “You have to make this decision based on circumstances. Be especially careful if the attacker has a weapon.”

The brochure, acquired by Danger Room, issues a series of guidances on “risk reduction” for sexual assault. Among others, it advises people under sexual attack in parking lots to “consider rolling underneath a nearby auto and scream loud. It is difficult to force anyone out from under a car.” A public affairs officer at Shaw, Sgt. Alexandria Mosness, says she believes the brochure is current.

While the brochure also explains that sexual assault is not always committed by people who “don’t look like a rapist”—attackers “tend to have hyper-masculine attitudes,” it advises—it does not offer instruction to servicemembers on not committing sexual assault. Prevention is treated as the responsibility of potential victims.

“Rapists look for vulnerability and then exploit it in those who: are young (naive); are new to the base, deployment, area, etc.; are emotionally unstable,” the brochure (.pdf) continues.

The quoted brochure is from SC's Shaw Air Force Base, one of the largest Air Force bases in the US, a base that includes its own self-contained town supporting around 16,500 military personnel and their families. (By contrast, the closest town, Sumter, has a population of roughly 40,500.)

So it's important to remember that in the scenarios outlined in this rape-prevention brochure, the rapists that are attacking servicewomen are likely servicemen. Yet these servicemen aren't given helpful tips or training on how to avoid physically and sexually assaulting their peers.

This brochure suggests that the Air Force—these servicewomen's bosses—still don't see rape as a man's issue. It's a woman's issue, one as natural and inevitable as your monthly menses, one women should just accept unless they're dykes or drama queens or some other troublesome kind of women who rolls under cars to avoid being raped by their peers.

LA city attorney Carmen A. Trutanich lauded the victims' courage to come forward.

From the LA Times account of that night:

The group was taken to Francis' gated home, where a physical altercation ensued between Francis and two of the women as he allegedly attempted to pull one of them away from the others, authorities said.

Francis grabbed one of the women by the throat and hair and pushed and slammed her head into the tile floor four times, according to authorities.

The women were escorted out of the house and allegedly told a taxi would not be called and paid for if they called the police.

Francis faces serious jail time—up to five years. He'll be sentenced tomorrow in LA County superior court. Good riddance.

Zombie Industries is a company that produces zombie-themed "life-sized tactical mannequin" targets that really "bleed" when shot. The company sells 15 male zombies, many of which were on display at last weekend's NRA convention in Houston—including one that was pulled for resembling President Obama. The company also sells five animal zombies, two alien zombies, and one lady zombie: "The Ex GF."

As Zombie Industries explains on its website, "to discriminate against Women by not having them represented in our product selection would be just plain sexist." Ha ha! Because there's nothing sexist or dangerous about creating a grown-up version of a Betsy Wetsy doll for bloodthirsty adults with domestic violence fantasies and ready access to firearms, and naming her "The Ex." Ha ha ha!

So what if domestic violence already hurts more women than car accidents, rapes, and muggings combined.

So what if firearms were used to kill more than two-thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims between 1990 and 2005, or that abused women are five times more likely to be killed by their abuser if the abuser owns a firearm, as the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence claims.

Shooting guns is fun. It's an American freedom! And apparently in America, the only thing more freeing than shooting guns is practicing on the Whore Who Broke Your Heart™.

See video of trigger-happy men shooting up their ex after the jump.

Posted by news intern Ansel Herz

Slog tipper Emily Steed called State Representative Elizabeth Scott (R-Monroe) to ask why she was the lone "nay" vote in the House's 96-1 passage of a bill that finally criminalized marital rape in the third degree.

"She kind of hangs herself with her own words, if you ask me," Emily says. "It's pretty gross." Emily forwarded the representative's email response:

Please be assured that as a survivor of domestic violence from my first marriage I thought long and hard about my decision to vote against House Bill 1108 which revises the definitions of indecent liberties and rape in the third degree. This bill requires absolutely no proof that rape occurred—because there couldn't be any—and is specifically NOT about forcible rape.

My concern was that someone could accuse her spouse of 'rape in the 3rd degree' which is not what most people think of when they hear the word 'rape'. This bill is not about physically forced sex. If for example, a husband verbally threatens his wife pressuring her to have sex against her will, that will be a crime. The problem is, how do you prove it? There's no way to prove that. I am concerned that a divorcing spouse could lie about it just to make more trouble on the way out the door.

My second concern is that, as a linguist, I hate it when words are twisted beyond recognition. Rape used to mean rape. Now it doesn't, so we add ridiculous adjectives like 'forcible' to make it clear.
Even though we disagree, I hope this helps to clarify why I voted against the bill. I ran on smaller smarter government and I intend to keep that promise. However, please let me know if follow-up is needed. I would like to sit down and meet with you over coffee sometime if you are interested.
In liberty,

Elizabeth Scott
39th District Representative

Scott's office has not yet responded to a request for comment on whether her concern over "trouble on the way out the door" actually trumps the ability for wives to prosecute spousal rapists. UPDATE: Scott has confirmed the email represents her position.

[ Comment on this story ]

A woman says she was assaulted at knife point while walking through Capitol Hill's Cal Anderson park around 4:00 a.m. this morning. Details come from the SPD blotter:

The woman stated that she was walking through the park at that hour when she heard a man yelling for assistance. The woman told officers the man was stating he had been stabbed, so she went over to help. When she reached him, he stood up and produced a knife. According to the victim, the man then put the knife in his pocket and put his arm through hers, in an “escort” fashion, and the two of them walked through the park.

At one point the suspect pushed the woman against a tree and held her there with his arm while he attempted to masturbate. According to the victim, the suspect got frustrated and pushed her to the ground. At about that time, two men walking their dog came through the park. The dog ran over to the suspect and victim. The victim told officers that the suspect told the dog to leave, and the dog walkers came over to apologize and retrieve their dog. At that point the woman got up off the ground and walked away with the dog walkers. She then walked to the precinct where she reported the incident to officers.

Officers were unable to locate the suspect, whom the victim described as a tall, thin, white man with bad acne and teeth.

On the left, we have Kim "Even My Armpits Are Fat!" Kardashian. (Let me pause for a moment and say: Like most women, I feel acutely aware of all the ways my body can fail to please others at any given moment, but dear lord, it has never occurred to me that you can have FAT ARMPITS.)

On the right, we have Gwyneth "World's Most Beautiful Woman" Paltrow.

There's no in between, really. It's either Ol' Fat Armpits McGee or Mrs. Goop. You choose.

Until yesterday, "But we're married!" was a perfectly adequate defense in our state to the charge of rape in the third degree, as well as the euphemistically named crime "indecent liberties." Fortunately, Governor Jay Inslee signed a bill on Wednesday closing that awful loophole in Washington State law.

Use of force isn't a prerequisite of being convicted of rape in the third degree, which simply requires that the victim "did not consent... to sexual intercourse with the perpetrator and such lack of consent was clearly expressed by the victim's words or conduct," or that a suspect exhibited a "threat of substantial unlawful harm to property rights of the victim." But until yesterday, it also required that the victim be "not married to the perpetrator." Marital rape is a form of partner abuse, and I can only imagine the horror of reporting what would otherwise be a third-degree rape by your spouse only to discover that it was not, in fact, a crime.

Like many states, we eliminated marriage as a defense against first- and second-degree rape in the '80s. This new law will eliminate jury instructions like number two, here:

Thank god, Washington. Never have I been so happy to see a good old-fashioned strikethrough.

What's Wrong with the Plan B Compromise?

Responding to a federal court order to make emergency contraceptives available over the counter without age restrictions by May 5, the Federal Drug Administration instead countered yesterday with a proposal to make Plan B and other emergency contraceptives available in retail aisles and sold to women age 15 and up, with ID.

In some ways, this is a victory for women's reproductive freedom (remember not so long ago, when Health secretary Kathleen Sebelius argued that 17-year-olds need a prescription for Plan B?). It also brings up at least one troubling question—how does a teen legally buy it if, like most 15-year-olds, she doesn't have her driver's license yet?

And psychologist and reproductive health blogger Valerie Tarico points out why and how the compromise falls short:

What’s wrong with a little compromise?

Two things.

First, the job of the FDA is to make rules based on uncorrupted science. Not politics. Not convenience or comfort. Science. Period. Drug companies may advocate on behalf of their profit margins. Politicians may advocate on behalf of political ideology or campaign donors or favorite lobbyists. But the job of the FDA is to make clean recommendations based on how foods and drugs actually affect people. In this case those people are women and teens, and the science is clear. Having the drug freely available results in better public health outcomes than does restricting it. Political compromise casts doubt on the whole regulatory enterprise, and the agency, and it should.

Second, the real effect of the compromise isn’t on 11-year-olds, who don’t actually have sex and then show up at drug stores with 50 dollars worth of allowance in their pockets asking for Plan B. The real effect is on females of all ages who are forced to produce ID to get emergency contraception. When a women or teen needs emergency contraception she typically is in a situation she would rather not publicize. A condom has broken. Or she screwed up her birth control. Or she had impulsive sex. Or she got raped.

Tarico then patiently explains how this compromise benefits religious conservatives and their sex-shaming agenda. Go read the whole thing.

Tim Burgess: If Only All Women Were as Good as His Daughters, There Wouldn't Be a Wage Gap

Unlike Goldy, I didn't attend the first mayoral panel of the season on Monday, but I've been slowly making my way through the Seattle Channel video archive of the event by piece and parcel, with my own bucket of stale popcorn.

And there's one question—or rather, one response—that I don't think has gotten nearly enough attention. It comes at about the 52:30 mark, when moderator C.R. Douglas asks Charlie Staadecker, Tim Burgess, and Bruce Harrell to respond to this question:

Why do you think Seattle has the worst gender pay gap in the US and how do you plan to address it?

I really wish all candidates had responded to this question. Amidst fluffy questions about what people had stored on their iphones, professional regrets, or what their fantasy legacy as mayor might be, this was one of the most concrete questions of the night—the rare question that gave candidates a chance to talk policy while addressing an issue of injustice affecting half their voter base.

As it was, two out of three candidates flubbed their responses, hard.* Staadecker admitted that he didn't know the issue existed: "First of all, I will confess, I was not aware as a city that we were the worst in the United States. Therefore, if women aren’t being paid, if there’s a glass ceiling, that has to be through education and skills."

Worse, Burgess said this: "Well, if everybody had daughters like I did the problem would self correct, eventually." In other words, most women must not be as smart as Burgess's daughters? Or work as hard as them? Or something?

To be clear, I'm all for tasteless jokes—I make them, I love them. But if you're going to lead with a tasteless joke, you'd better have a solid answer to back it up. Burgess doesn't. Instead he throws some rambling praise for early learning programs, which are great but have nothing to do with addressing the gender/wage gap. At all. At least Staadecker had the grace to admit he didn't know what the fuck he was talking about. Burgess's answer was more than embarrassing; it was insulting, dismissive, and off point.

Only Harrell managed an articulate answer, for which he was rewarded with the biggest applause of the night: "The answer is simple—institutional practices. We haven’t paid attention to the institutional practices. Here’s the difference between the mayor and myself—when I read the report, I immediately went into action. I’ve asked the Seattle Women’s commission to develop a work plan with me to look at the policy changes we have to do."

I have no doubt this question will come up again and when it does, Burgess and Staadecker will be ready for it. Everyone will. The seven candidates fighting for McGinn's seat have months to groom themselves and polish their answers to suit our ears, which is why questions like this, which catch candidates completely, embarrassingly unaware (you want us to talk about women troubles? wha?), matter so much.

*Read their full, unedited responses after the jump.

Why do you think Seattle has the worst gender pay gap in the US and how will you address it?

Charlie Staadecker: First of all, I will confess, I was not aware as a city that we were the worst in the United States. Therefore, if women aren’t being paid, if there’s a glass ceiling, that has to be through education and skills. We’ve got to have equal skills and equal pay. Does the city need to mandate that, I think that would be a mistake. But I think that is based on, very much on education, expanding the opportunities in both biotech and life sciences. I wish I had a clearer answer for you on this one. I think it takes a city where employers recognize the value of women to succeed as much as men.

Tim Burgess: Well, if everybody had daughters like I did the problem would self correct, eventually. This report came out just a few weeks ago and it’s obviously very discouraging and I don’t know all of the factors that contribute to that in our city but it goes back to education. I’m a huge advocate for early, early, early interventions. We should start at birth, not at age five or even where Headstart begins at age four. It also requires an acknowledgement of the problem. Like Charlie, I just learned about this a few weeks ago when this report came out. I think we pride ourselves on making progress on issues like that and obviously we have a long ways to go.

Bruce Harrell: The answer is simple—institutional practices. [big applause] We haven’t paid attention to the institutional practices. Here’s the difference between the mayor and myself—when I read the report, I immediately went into action. I’ve asked the Seattle Women’s commission to develop a work plan with me to look at the policy changes we have to do. Years ago, a woman walked into office when I was a practicing lawyer and she says, “I work at Boeing and I’m underpaid compared to my colleagues.” I met with several women. That meeting turned into a class action lawsuit representing all the women. My candidacy is about that, when I look at the injustices that occur. It’s not like a lot of folks are saying, “hey, let’s smoke a cigar and discriminate against women.” That’s not what occurs, what occurs is that we don’t pay attention to the patterns and the disparate impacts. So we need a proactive leader who’s bold enough to propose new solutions. The STEM programs—my colleague Tim is absolutely right, we have to look at the pathways to success for everyone. We have exciting opportunities but it takes intent, intent, intent.

[ Comment on this story ]

Hey, look, Mom: It's institutions, clubs, positions, and honors of all kinds that just happen to entirely exclude women, and a hell of a lot of them, like:

• All incarnations of the Dalai Lama, ever.
• Every annual award given by the National Sportscaster and Sportswriters Association, ever, along with the entire board.
• Everyone to ever hold “the most famous academic chair in the world.”
• Every person on U.S. banknotes ever.
• All of the Master Chefs of France and the board of the American Culinary Federation...

We just got an e-mail from Slog tipper idaho, asking us to fact-check a tweet that Jason Collins isn't the first major sports star to come out of the closet. Here's what idaho writes:

Hey, I saw a tweet that the WNBA has openly gay players. That is a professional sports league. It just happens to be made up of second-class citizens known as women, so of course if this is true, then they wouldn't really count in the "first professional athlete to be openly gay" category.

It's totally true. From the P-I in 2005:

Three-time Olympic gold medalist. Three-time Most Valuable Player in the WNBA. And, as of Wednesday, the only openly gay athlete to currently play a major professional team sport.

Many people said Sheryl Swoopes' announcement that she is gay was a non-story—either because her sexuality shouldn't matter or because she is far from a household name. But the Houston Comets star, perhaps the best woman to ever work the hardwoods, is in a public club of one. And that has made her revelation a landmark.

Eight years ago, Sheryl Swoopes essentially said, "I'm a 34-year-old WNBA forward. I'm black. And I'm gay." There are other openly gay players in the WNBA, too.

I totally understand that cultural expectations around men's sports and sexuality are different from those around women's, and I don't want to step on history's big basketball-shaped happy face. But I do feel like this should be acknowledged.

[ Comment on this story ]

...CHASTITY BELT!!!

My favorite band photographer Sarah Creighton tooled together a steak chastity belt and took a series of these Virgin Suicides-with-a-twist photos after a conversation where the band was joking about making it a habit of throwing raw meat at apathetic crowds. It makes for some striking feminist imagery, and I gotta give props to Chastity Belt for having the guts to not take the same stupid "band lined up in front of a brick wall" press photo...

Henry Decker at National Memo describes President Obama's address to Planned Parenthood from earlier today:

Obama, who made history by becoming the first sitting U.S. president ever to address the group, offered a spirited defense of Planned Parenthood’s mission. Noting that one in five American women has turned to Planned Parenthood for health care services ranging from contraception to cancer screenings, Obama said “when politicians try to turn Planned Parenthood into a punching bag, they’re not just talking about you, but they’re talking about the millions of women who they serve.”
...
“There’s nothing conservative about the government injecting itself into decisions best made between a woman and her doctor” Obama noted, in a shot at Planned Parenthood’s Republican critics.

Here's video of the speech:

Coachella Features an Embarrassingly Low Number of Female Performers, the Block Party Does Not

Last week Buzzfeed crunched some numbers and discovered that only about 16% of this year's Coachella performers were or featured a female. 16%? Ouch!

Yesterday a writer at Slate weighed in, theorizing that it isn't just a problem with Coachella—the lack of women on the bill mirrors many other big music festivals (including Lollaplaooza, Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch, which I calculated also has a pitiful 16%). That isn't just Coachella, Bonnaroo, et al.'s fault, though—it may also have to do with the musical genres they tend to focus on:

...the real problem at most of these festivals lies in the alternative subcultures they celebrate. Formed out of the male-dominated music scenes of jam music (in the case of Bonnaroo), late-’90s indie rock (Coachella), and early ’90s alternative and grunge (Lollapalooza), these festivals tend to celebrate diversity while dismissing the most popular pop acts—the ones who tend to dominate the charts and who tend so often to be female—as frivolous or corporate. As the festivals expand beyond their narrow roots, maybe fans and organizers should start to take the commercially and critically successful female acts they currently deride more seriously. Surely some of them are worth the kind of herculean effort—and often exorbitant cash—required to reunite groups like The Stone Roses (who headlined Coachella this year, in front of a disappointingly small audience).

You can read the whole essay here.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at this year's Capitol Hill Block Party lineup.

A 28-year-old sailor enjoying a day-long shore leave in Dubai reportedly became the target of an attempted sexual assault when she got on a bus to get back to the port. Instead, the driver parked the bus in a lot, allegedly pulled out a knife, and reportedly tried to rape her. Here's what happened next, according to The National:

The woman, an off-duty US navy sailor, knocked the knife from his grasp, broke it in two, bit his hand, wrestled him to the ground and put him in a stranglehold between her thighs.

Having beaten him into submission, she left the bus and reported the incident to her commander.

Bravo, thigh master. Bravo.

Every time Mars Hill "Church"'s "Pastor" Mark Driscoll opens his mouth, a metric shit-ton of stupid falls out. Here's the latest bale of bullshit, via Addicting Info, about the problem with wives:

They’re quarrelsome. They’re a nag. And some women — you’re a nag. You’re disrespectful. You’re quarrelsome. Being married to you is like a life sentence, and the guy’s just scratching on his wall every day. Proverbs talks about certain women—they’re like a dripping faucet. You ever tried to sleep with a dripping faucet? Plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk. It’s what we use to torture people who are prisoners of war. A wife is like that.

If Mark Driscoll thinks that being married to a woman is torture, he should know that, as a Washington State resident, he has plenty of other options. May I humbly suggest that Driscoll look into marrying a man? He might find that to be a much more amenable relationship, since he hates women so fucking much. Anyway, find video of the "pastor's" little rant over at Crooks and Liars.

(Many thanks to Slog tipper mr herriman.)

Examining Reactions to Rape in India and the US

In India:

NEW DELHI — The police arrested a second suspect in the rape and torture of a 5-year-old girl on Monday and announced that the number of reported rapes in New Delhi had more than doubled since December, while molesting cases had risen sixfold.

... Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said at a news conference Monday that the increase in the number of reported sex crimes in New Delhi was a measure of how much more seriously the police took such reports since the gang rape of a medical student in December led to widespread protests and the enactment of a new rape law. In addition to the sharp rise in the number of reported rape and molesting cases, cases of sexual harassment have risen more than sevenfold, he said.

Despite the police commissioner's polishing-the-turd statement, the family of the five-year-old victim says that police didn't take their claims seriously at first and tried to bribe them into keeping their mouths shut about the gang rape.

Meanwhile, in the US:

Swarthmore and Occidental Colleges on Thursday joined the list of elite institutions accused of mistreating victims of sexual assault and harassment, and activists say they are preparing similar accusations against other well-known colleges.

... Carly Mee, now a senior [at LA's Occidental College], said, “When I told an administrator that I did not feel safe, I was told that I had nothing to worry about, that she had met with my rapist, and that he didn’t seem like the type of person who would do something like that.” She said that even after the man was found responsible for assaulting her and two other women, he would be allowed back to Occidental, while she was afraid to return.

What disturbs me as much as the rolling list of rape stories that hit my news feed every day is the number of people in those news stories (or their comments sections) that dismiss the rapes, label it an unfortunate anomaly, or worse yet, an act the victims invited upon themselves.

People absolve rapists for stunningly stupid reasons—like because they have friends or come from "good" families. Some rapists attend church and get good grades and volunteer at soup kitchens. Some are handsome and charming, so why would they need to rape a woman? Surprisingly, many rapists "don't seem like the type of person who would do something like that."

But it shouldn't need to be said again and again and again but this forgiving, dismissive behavior simultaneously discredits and alienates victims of assault. That, as much as rape itself, needs to stop before women can be raised as equals in society instead of victims-in-waiting.

[ Comment on this story ]

The girl was attacked inside a locked room over a 48-hour period, police said, after being abducted as she played outside on Monday in a lower-middle class area of the capital New Delhi.

... Doctors said the girl’s genital area had been mutilated and that objects had been inserted inside her, causing serious internal injuries and infection.

I know this sounds almost too horrific for the mind to process but take heart. As one condescending Slog commenter recently explained to me, feminism already won. We won, ladies! We're no longer seen as objects to be used and abused—we're all separate but equal now!

So remember: there are two sides to every story, she was old enough to talk so surely she was old enough to seduce a gang of men into raping her, let's pray for the men, etc. etc. etc.

(Confidential to humanity: Fuck you, humanity.)

Remember Anita Sarkeesian, the woman behind the pop culture blog Feminist Frequency who launched a successful $160,000 Kickstarter campaign last year to research and report on misogyny in video game culture, much to the howling rage of an internet's worth of misogynist gamers?

Sarkeesian's first part of the series was released last month and even if you're not a gamer, the way she tackles her topic—Damsels in Distress—is both approachable and fascinating. Sarkeesian methodically hits upon everything from etymology to Greek mythology to mustachio'd villains and railroad-strapped damsels, to Popeye and King Kong, eventually illustrating how women became popular objects to be stolen and rescued and stolen again in generations of modern video games with demeaning tags like, Willst thou get the girl... or play like one?

"The damsel in distress is not just a synonym for weak," she explains. "Instead, it works by ripping away the power from female characters... distilled down to its essence, the plot device works by trading the disempowerment of female character for the power of male characters."

If you've already seen this video, congrats! You won the internet! If you haven't, it's well worth your time.

Roughly 25 women in pink shirts are sitting in the peanut gallery in Olympia right now, giving state Senators Rodney Tom and Steve Litzow the hairy stink eye. Planned Parenthood advocates are in Olympia today to shame/cajole/beg legislators to bring the Reproductive Parity Act (HB 1044) to the Senate floor for a vote.

But despite their earlier promises to support the legislation, Senators Tom and Litzow now seem intent on blocking the RPA at all costs.

Planned Parenthood

Twenty five Senators previously pledged to support the RPA (HB 1044), including both Tom and Litzow. As Anna previously explained, even though the cutoff date passed for passing the bill out of the senate's healthcare committee two weeks ago, it can still be pulled to the floor via a "ninth order" maneuver as long as majority leader Tom and the other 24 senators who've claimed support for the bill show a little follow through.

Last night, 23 of those senators stood by their word and voted to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. Tom and Litzow voted against the bill. Today, senators brought up the bill again—this time via an insurance bill—and once again Tom and Litzow went back on their word and voted no.

The legislation would mandate that insurance carriers that cover maternity care to also cover abortion care on their plans, which is critical to maintaining abortion access for women. You see, while the passage of the Affordable Care Act ensures that more than 300,000 Washington women are gaining insurance coverage, the ACA also includes incentives for insurance carriers to drop abortion coverage. Passing the RPA would ensure that doesn’t happen in Washington.

But let's face it: Lobbying the legislators who've already proven their contempt for women's rights—except on the most superficial, lip service levels—is the bleakest of Hail Marys. Tom has had many chances to ensure the RPA passed and he pissed away every one.

At this point, there's not much left to say but game over. And fuck you, Rodney Tom.

Of course the French would advocate for women going braless—pendulous breasts be damned!—but unlike this baseless magazine ad, they've conducted research showing that among a small sample size of young women, unbound breasts are marginally less likely to sag than their bra-supported counterparts.

Take it away, Telegraph:

Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon of Besançon University spent 15 years studying the anatomy of 330 women, before coming to the radical conclusion that bras are a “false necessity”.

Professor Rouillon said: “Medically, physiologically, anatomically—breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity.”

The study found that breasts were firmer and sagged less in the women who did not wear a bra, and such women were no more likely than others to suffer from back pain.

The sports scientist, who has been researching the subject since 1997, using a slide rule and a caliper, found a 7mm difference in the height of bosoms, with those who went without a bra faring best against gravity.

You hear that, ladies? Seven millimeters: The distance separating women's studies majors from women's studies minors, the distance between pendulous breasts and world-weary ones.

Thanks, to Bill, who also pointed me to this fun piece on why women should stop shaving their legs.

I recently came across this ad (.pdf) in a magazine:

The ad states: "Pendulous breasts aren't just unsightly, they are a real and possibly serious health issue for many women. Breasts can feel, or be, very heavy and can even cause back pain. In addition, in warmer climates, it can get itchy under the breasts as well.

Some breasts are naturally 'too big,' but some sag as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Aging can be unkind to breasts as skin lose its elasticity. Gravity plays a big role too."

The ad doesn't explain how a lady should gauge whether her breasts have become clinically pendulous. I'm guessing a metronome is involved.

I don't doubt that some women need breast reduction surgery to live full, happy, back-pain-free lives. I know such women. But this ad basically makes the case that every woman is at risk for this "serious health issue."

It's funny but of all the serious health issues that run in my family—alcoholism, underachievism, dadaism—I've never thought to worry about pendulous breasts. Perhaps my self esteem is too healthy for my own good, which apparently ads like this are eager to rectify.

After all, what could be better for business than ensuring that generations of women of all body types are socially conditioned to fear the effects of gravity, motherhood, and aging, and are totally reliant on unnecessary surgeries to reinforce their self worth?

[ Comment on this story ]

I guess this means Fox News is fighting this fight on their own now:

RT @jonkarl: President Obama called Kamala Harris last night to apologize for calling her the "best looking attorney general" in the country
— Andrew Kaczynski (@BuzzFeedAndrew) April 5, 2013

To those of you complaining about the fact that this isn't as serious a feminist issue as the Republican war against abortion: I agree that an offhand comment made at a fundraiser isn't as big a deal as banning access to abortion for all women everywhere. Good point! But even though it's not the most outrageous moral transgression in the history of the world, it's still a topic worthy of discussion. And that's what the internet is for, right? Communication?

And for those of you who say that there are more important topics out there to talk about: The internet is capable of containing more than one conversation at any time. Rather than talking about how unimportant something is, maybe go find something important and talk about that, instead? Because going out of your way to prominently post "who cares?" in a discussion thread is kind of an oxymoronic action.

I'm glad President Obama apologized. It was a classy move, and the whole affair was dealt with quickly and without any drama. This is a perfect demonstration of how to handle a situation like this one.

Speaking at a fundraiser in Atherton, Calif., President Obama diverged from his prepared remarks to praise the looks of the state attorney general, Kamala Harris.

“She’s brilliant and she’s dedicated, she’s tough,” he said. “She also happens to be, by far, the best looking attorney general.”

“It’s true! C’mon,” he added, to laughter from the crowd.

"C'mon," indeed.
