This just in...

A new study has found that almost 10 percent of people who are classified medically as obese believe they have a healthy body size and do not need to lose weight—despite the fact that many have high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and diabetes.... “Perception affects behavior,” said Tiffany Powell, a cardiology fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas who reported the findings November 17 at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2009. Obese patients who misperceived their body size were less likely to see a physician, she said: 44 percent had not seen a doctor in the past year, compared with 26 percent of obese patients who thought they needed to lose weight. For someone to become motivated enough to improve diet and exercise habits, she said, “they have to understand that obesity is not benign.”

Denialists won't be able to argue that this study's sample size is too small: the data is from the Dallas Heart Study, which involves 6000 subjects. But perhaps the methodology is flawed...

After asking participants to classify their body size as below normal, normal or above normal, the researchers found that about one of every eight people who were obese rated his body size as normal...

Obesity is rapidly becoming the norm in places like Dallas County.

The United States sends hundreds of millions of dollars to Uganda every year to combat the spread of AIDS. Meanwhile the government in Uganda and the Ugandan media actively persecute gay people—which drives the minority at highest risk for HIV infection underground, which means gay men in Uganda don't have access to HIV-prevention education, resources, or treatment, which ensures that the AIDS crisis there will only get worse, which means all those hundreds of millions of dollars American taxpayer are sending to the Uganda government are essentially wasted. Cut 'em off, says Jamie Kirchick, until the persecution stops.

Several nurses at Jackson Memorial Hospital have personally apologized to Janice Langbehn, a lesbian from Washington state who said that a Jackson social worker wouldn't allow her to be with her dying partner in 2007. "We certainly are sorry for the pain and suffering she felt," said Martha Baker, a registered nurse and president of Service Employees International Union Local 1991, the union representing about 5,000 healthcare professionals at Jackson, which is in Miami.

Langbehn, whose lawsuit against Jackson was dismissed in September by a federal court in Miami, welcomed the nurses' gesture. But she still wants the hospital to apologize formally. "The management has to do it," Langbehn said.... [Langbehn's] longtime partner Lisa Pond, who suffered a fatal brain aneurysm on Feb. 18, 2007, shortly before they were to sail with their three children on a Caribbean cruise. At Jackson, Langbehn said, a social worker would not let her visit Pond because Florida is "an anti-gay state." Pond, 39, died the next day.

Sixty: Senate Democrats put together enough votes to open debate on health care reform. That doesn't guarantee whatever bill the Senate comes up with will pass though.

Jesus Is Mean: An orthodox Catholic bishop has banned U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy from receiving communion—which is important to those guys—in Rhode Island. Because Kennedy's pro-choice. And the bishop's kind of a dick.

The Crazy Murder Trial is Back: Prosecutors in Italy are seeking a life sentence for Amanda Knox. They even backed up their case with some kind of crazy cartoon reenactment!

Mine Explosion in China: 92 people now dead, and 16 missing inside.

MLS Cup: They've sold 40,000 tickets so far for today's championship game between the L.A. Galaxy and ridiculously named Real Salt Lake.

Smoking: Here's who the CDC says is doing it. A lot of them seem to come from West Virginia.

Anyone Else Noticed This? The city's been installing brown street signs. Here's what it all means.

Iran: They want fuel for their nuclear facilities, and say any attack on them "will be crushed."

Raising Awareness About Pedestrian Safety: Via a crowd of people prancing around downtown. It's how SDOT is getting the word out about car-pedestrian collisions.

Oops: Washington State collects $21,000 in child support from a man who didn't owe it. And offered him a $1.24 refund.

In case you need some dumbing down this morning:

The Battle Continues: The Senate votes on whether to begin debate on health care reform today. Democrats were close to reaching the 60 vote threshhold last night. Every fucking Republican still pledged to vote against it.

Shooting on Capitol Hill: A man was shot in the chest last night, and was in critical condition at Harborview. Few details at this point.

The Tunnel—Still a Crappy Idea: The Sightline Institute looks at the Brightwater sewage treatment tunnel's problems, and says the viaduct replacement tunnel could be just as much of a clusterfuck!

Kids These Days: State school superintendent Randy Dorn wants a delay for math and science testing requirements. 'Cause, you know, the tests aren't working.

At Least Some People Aren't Dicks: People have donated over $100,000 worth of food to the Rainier Valley food bank that was robbed last week.

Berkeley Protesters: Dozens of the people occupying a campus building at UC-Berkeley were arrested last night.

Today in Smashing Particles Into Each Other: The gigantic particle accelerator in Switzerland is almost ready to resume experiments to create Big Bang-like conditions.

At least a hundred people have forwarded me a link to this story, suggesting it for Slog since it has so many hilarious details. A morbidly obese man in South Carolina who couldn't get out of the recliner in his living room, his wife of two years who cleaned the recliner every morning because her morbidly obese husband used the chair as a toilet, the morbidly obese man, a former preacher, passing his time in the recliner "posting sermons online" and "talking about religion to other people on the Internet." And when the man died on his second wedding anniversary—of a heart attack at age 33—his wife telling the AP that she "had the worst anniversary" but her husband "had the best one he ever had because he's with Jesus now."

Hilarious?

Sorry, no. The story is an indictment of the American "health care" system. That man needed to be in a bed in a hospital, not in a recliner in a mobile home. Here are really damning details: Daniel Webb was in that recliner because paramedics deposited him there after bringing him home from the hospital. He'd been in the hospital for the emergency treatment of a weight-related knee injury. "Ada Webb said she begged hospital officials to keep him after doctors treated his knee injury in March. But the couple had no way to pay and were sent home." Webb was in the recliner for eight months, dying by inches, and didn't seek help "because he... didn't have health insurance."

Webb was a sick man who needed to be in a hospital—and, I'm sorry, but it sounds like he needed to be far away from his loving wife. In the eight months he was in that recliner Webb went from 550 pounds to "about 800 pounds," according to police. Webb had no health insurance and a feeder and/or enabler at home. I'm sorry, Slog tippers, but I don't think this story is particularly funny. I think it's a sad indictment of our health care "system."

Cnet is reporting that Paul Allen has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and that this memo was distributed by Vulcan CEO and Paul Allen sister Jody Allen:

To employees of Vulcan and affiliates:

I want to let you know that Paul was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

He received the diagnosis early this month and has begun chemotherapy. Doctors say he has diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a relatively common form of lymphoma.

This is tough news for Paul and the family. But for those who know Paul's story, you know he beat Hodgkin's a little more than 25 years ago and he is optimistic he can beat this, too.

Paul is feeling OK and remains upbeat. He continues to work and he has no plans to change his role at Vulcan. His health comes first, though, and we'll be sure that nothing intrudes on that.

We would ask you to respect Paul's privacy and not discuss this outside of the office.

If you have any questions, please ask your EC member.

Thank you in advance for what I know will be all your good thoughts for Paul.

    Jody

It's unclear if the memo was leaked to Cnet, but other sources are reporting that the news has been confirmed by a Vulcan spokesperson.

McGinn Goes Against Tradition: The mayor-elect stands in front of a white board and says, "We're not just going to talk to important elected officials, nor are we just going to talk to the same old people who advise new mayors about how things should work—we're going to talk to everybody." Spokesperson Aaron Pickus says: "We did not run a traditional campaign and we don't want to have a traditional transition."

"That means the library will be able to provide seven-day-a-week service at 11 branches and the Central Library."

9/11 Suspects Will Be Tried in New York City: "The decision marks a milestone in the administration’s efforts to close the Guantánamo prison..."

So Much for Being Neutral: Switzerland is going after Google for its Street View application, saying it violates privacy rights. The country is taking Google to court to try to force the company "to ensure that all faces and car license plates are blurred, remove pictures of enclosed areas such as walled gardens and private streets, and declare at least one week in advance which town and cities it plans to photograph and post online."

It pains me to say it—it's always painful when you have to say this—but the Michelle Malkins of the world have a point: politically correct timidity seems to have prevented the Fort Hood shooter's colleagues from taking appropriate action against him before he shot and killed 13 soldiers. They were so afraid of being labeled "Islamophobic" that they refused to move against Maj. Nidal Hasan despite believing him to be psychotic because he was also "espousing... extremist Islamic views." If Hasan had merely been crazy they might have kicked his ass out. But he was crazy and a conservative/radical Muslim and no one wanted to appear intolerant. Irshad Manji correctly diagnoses the problem on Hardball yesterday:

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

The money quote: "We are willing to tolerate intolerance in order to be perceived as tolerant ourselves." And that's a mistake and it has to stop. Advocates of tolerance have to be aggressively and unapologetically intolerant of intolerance. Islamic bigots, Christian bigots, racist bigots—they're all aware of this weakness, this desire on the part of the tolerant to model tolerant behavior, and they actively exploit it. Call bullshit on their discriminatory and hateful political agendas and they whine, "You say you're all for tolerance but you're not willing to tolerate me when all I'm doing is attempting to discriminate against you!" And this moronic line of argument seems to paralyze people.

Look at it this way: Everyone agrees that violence is always wrong—except in self defense. It's wrong, for instance, to shoot people. But it wasn't wrong for that cop at Fort Hood to shoot Nidal Hasan. That was appropriate violence, violence employed to put a stop to violence, violence in self defense. Being intolerant is always wrong—except in defense of tolerance. That's appropriate intolerance, intolerance employed to put a stop to intolerance, tolerance acting in its own self defense.
