Seemingly based on that <a href="http://www.orkposters.com/seattle.html">Ork poster</a> that's hanging in your living room right now, it's labeled by the most commonly tweeted words in each neighborhood. You can read all about <a href="http://www.geekwire.com/2013/tweetbased-map-seattle-accurately-describe-neighborhood/">the methodology in this Geekwire post</a>.</p> <p>Monroy-Hern&#225;ndez tells Geekwire he's interested in "<strong>data-driven art</strong>" and that as a new Seattle transplant, he has "both empty walls and an interest in art that represents my new city."</p> <p>Go find where you live! <strong>What word is on your house?</strong> Try and figure out where the weird words come from. For example, "salt" is the most prominent word in North Seattle, but then you realize it must be about snowy roads, right? And because it's all based on volume of tweets, neighborhoods that had low volumes have a lot more words from police tweets about their hood. The day before, it was an electrical fire aboard a Dreamliner that had just landed in Boston from Tokyo.</p> <blockquote><p>The events were the latest in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/11/business/boeing-787-plane-works-to-overcome-snags.html">a series of problems</a> with the 787, which entered commercial service in November 2011 and has been hit by technical and electric malfunctions since then.</p></blockquote> <p>Among the previous problems: a mid-flight generator failure in December, and a warning from the FAA (also in December) about fuel line connector problems on the plane that could pose "a risk of fuel leaks and fires." The tribe sent a <strong>cease-and-desist letter</strong> months ago, but says that while some of the product names have been changed (like the underpants and the FLASK&#8212;no, I'm not joking), others are still being sold through other brands and outlets.</p> <blockquote><p>The lawsuit filed late Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New Mexico alleges<strong> trademark violations and violations of the federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act</strong>, which makes it illegal to sell arts or crafts in a way to falsely suggest they're made by American Indians when they're not.</p> <p>The tribe has about 10 registered trademarks on the Navajo name that cover clothing, footwear, online retail sales, household products and textiles. It's <strong>a "D" peeled back from a "C," </strong>with an eye toward animation on digital and cartoon properties. Myself, I'm a fan of the <a href="http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080904203921/marvel_dc/images/6/64/180px-Blue_DC_Bullet_Deluxe.jpg">DC bullet logo</a>, although that could very well be just because it's the logo that was on the books while I was growing up. So how do we settle this internet controversy? An <a href="http://seedmagazine.com/content/article/the_revenge_of_comic_sans/">article in Seed Magazine</a> explains:</p> <p><blockquote>Reasearchers... asked 28 student volunteers to read about hypothetical alien species from a sheet printed in either 16-point Arial, 12-point Bodoni, or, yes, 12-point Comic Sans. The larger Arial font was much more legible than the other two versions, but in a quiz 15 minutes later, students reading the Bodoni or Comic Sans versions were significantly more accurate in recalling details about the aliens.</blockquote></p> <p>This contradicts an earlier study:</p> <p><blockquote>In 2009, librarian Eric Schnell wanted to know if the font of his library handouts made a difference, and uncovered a 2008 study which suggested that it did. Researchers Hyunjin Song and Norbert Schwarz developed two versions of a handout designed to motivate students to exercise regularly. One was composed in basic Arial, while the other used the casual Brush font (like Comic Sans, a font meant to mimic handwriting). The students who read about exercise in Arial were significantly more enthusiastic about exercising than those who read in Brush. In a separate experiment, the researchers found similar results for a set of instructions on how to roll sushi. So perhaps those snobby typographers have a point: Setting type in a more readable font seems to lead to a better response.</blockquote></p> <p>More after the jump...</p> <p>I think the research and writing of <a href="http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/">Edward Tuffte</a> also contradicts this new study. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Tufte">While he primarily focuses on the visual presentation of data</a> as opposed to specifics of design, I don't think it's a stretch to extrapolate his theories, especially when you read his criticisms of PowerPoint, among them:</p> <p><blockquote>Poor typography and chart layout, from presenters who are poor designers and who use poorly designed templates and default settings (in particular, difficulty in using scientific notation);</blockquote></p> <p>When it comes to design, I still believe that form should follow function. Information design&#8212;whether it's handouts, newspapers, websites or ads&#8212;should never interfere with the actual information.
