CVM

My frozen rat.

I'm standing around a plywood work table in a backyard in Seward Park on a cloudy Saturday afternoon with a scalpel in one hand and a can of Pabst in the other, working up the nerve to slice into the frozen rat in front of me. Most of the people around the table have thawing bunnies in front of them; I opted for the rat because he struck me as more approachable. His eyes are closed and unlike most of the other creatures on the table, his mouth isn't stained with blood.

"Make a shallow cut along the back from the shoulder blades to about the hip bones," instructs Mickey Alice Kwapis, our twenty-something instructor. Kwapis taught herself taxidermy in 2011 and now travels across the country giving lessons on "ethical taxidermy." She buys her rabbit specimens from a meat processor plant that would otherwise throw them out. She tells me the rats were bred for snake food, destined for zoos until they ended up here, on this table, as part of a four-hour taxidermy tutorial instead.

My reasons for taking the class, other than simple curiosity, are personal. I am the proud owner of a chronically sick rat terrier, which means I brace for bad news at nearly every vet appointment. At our last monthly check-up, I met a very nice woman who has taxidermied all of her pet cats for the past 20 years. As she flipped through photos of delicately posed cats on her iphone, I thought, "Could I do that? Would I do that???" I'm here to find out.

Cutting into a frozen rat feels like slicing a frozen banana. That's the worst part, really, the first cut—and the pervasive dead rat smell. After that cut, fascination sets in, the awe of gently pulling aside the (hairy) curtain and seeing what's inside the creature in front of you. If you do it right, the process is not bloody. It simply takes patience and dexterity with both a scalpel and a sewing needle. I am good with none of those things. Coring and stuffing a rat settled my mind; my dog will not be taxidermied. When the time comes, he will be bronzed like my first baby shoes, teeth, and maxi pad.

My eleven taxidermy cohorts were respectful, curious, and full of good questions. Here are the answers to a few:

On taxidermying roadkill: It may be illegal (in Washington, it's definitely illegal to take big game). Check with your state's department of fish and wildlife.
On blood: Peroxide takes it out of anything.
On storage: "My freezer is 30 percent booze and 70 percent dead animals," Kwapis says.

Kwapis will be back in Seattle to teach another round of beginner taxidermy classes September 13-15 at The Belfry in Pioneer Square. Check out www.detroittaxidermy.com for more details.

Photos from the taxidermy class after the jump. Not for the squeamish.

That person did not have to wrastle with rat balls.

And recent days gave me a good but sad one, as this past Friday, Alan O'Day, the songwriter who created "Angie Baby" (as well as the #1 hit "Undercover Angel" and the hilariously titled album Caress Me Pretty Music) passed away at age 72. Here's the cartoon video that was made of his career-defining song, which was broadcast on The Sonny and Cher Show. Also, today is Cher's birthday. Anyway, please enjoy the cartoon "Angie Baby." (And if you need more Angie, don't miss this great live performance and this unnerving computer animation.)

RIP, Alan O'Day.

Let's begin with a passage in the Wikipedia entry for Malcolm X's wife, Betty Shabazz...

Following the arrest of her daughter Qubilah for allegedly conspiring to murder Louis Farrakhan, Shabazz took in her young grandson Malcolm. He set a fire in her apartment that caused severe burns to Shabazz. Shabazz died three weeks later as a result of her injuries.
Something bad happened to her grandson today...

Thursday morning, May 9, 2013 [Malcolm Shabazz died] from injuries sustained after he was thrown off a building or shot as he was being robbed in Tijuana.

As there is a Kennedy curse, there appears to be an X curse...

Pulled over by Middlefield, Ohio police for running a stop sign on March 10, James Gilkerson emerged from his car with an AK-47 blazing, firing 37 rounds at the cruiser before being shot dead by the officers. The two officers amazingly escaped with only minor injuries.

The recently released dash-cam video is nothing short of shocking, so be forewarned: DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE VIDEO OF A MAN BEING SHOT TO DEATH! Also, do not watch this if you do not want to see video of a man unloading 37 rounds directly at the camera.

Honestly. I don't want to hear anybody yelling at me about posting this video. I've warned you. I've even put it after the jump. You don't have to watch. SO DON'T WATCH THIS!

So why post this video? Because when Second Amendment advocates talk about their right to arm themselves against an oppressive government, this is exactly the sort of scenario their paranoid fantasy imagines. Police say they found eight 40-round magazines in Gilkerson's car, along with militia and terrorist literature. This is what it means to take up arms against your government. And ironically, facing off against a couple of small-town police officers who thought they were making a routine traffic stop, it was the AK-47-toting Gilkerson who ended up dead.

Dismiss this as the isolated act of a lone crazy, if you want. And yeah, Gilkerson's actions were certainly crazy. But his actions were also consistent with the sort of blind, anti-government rage that the NRA types are constantly stoking.

[ Comment on this story ]

Middle-Age Americans Offing Themselves in Record Numbers

Well, I suppose that's one way to rein in the costs of Social Security and Medicare:

Suicide rates among middle-age Americans have risen sharply in the past decade, prompting concern that a generation of baby boomers who have faced years of economic worry and easy access to prescription pain killers may be particularly vulnerable to self-inflicted harm.

Really, NY Times? That's the message you're taking away from these stats: That a surge in baby boomer suicides may be linked to easy access to prescription pain killers? That's the one possible contributing factor you choose to highlight in your lede?

In fact, year after year, about half of all suicides are committed using firearms, by far the most popular suicide method—especially among middle-age men, the group with the highest suicide rate by a long shot. True, the CDC data found that poisoning by all sources (including prescription painkillers) was up 18.5 percent for middle-age men since 1999, but the growth in firearm suicides didn't lag far behind, up 14.9 percent. Meanwhile the big winner in the suicide method sweepstakes was suffocation, up 75 percent for middle-age men since 1999, and a whopping 115 percent for middle-age women. Hanging yourself is the new eating your gun! Who knew?

Tragically, 21,754 Americans age 35-64 committed suicide in 2010 (more than died in car accidents), 10,393 by shooting themselves with a gun. Poisoning by all means—not just prescription painkillers—came in a distant second at 4,722 middle-age suicides, suffocation third at 4,117 but gaining fast. And yet it's "easy access" to palliative care, not guns (or ropes) that our nation's paper of record chooses to warn us about.

(And by the way, if there's a statistic that really jumps out from this report, it's that the suicide rate for middle-age white men jumped 39.6 percent compared to only 4.7 percent for Asian men, 1.9 percent for Hispanic men, and 1.0 percent for black men. A middle-age white man is now three times more likely to commit suicide than a middle-age black, Asian, or Hispanic man. Go figure.)

A 747 cargo plane crashed yesterday at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan, shortly after takeoff, killing seven crew members. Warning: Don't watch this video unless you want to watch video of a 747 falling out of the sky and exploding on impact.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility, but there's no sign of a missile or anything. Instead, this has more of a look of a catastrophic failure due to cargo shifting on takeoff.

Rebecca Mead says it's "dispiriting":

Her experience is not so different from that of many young American women now, caught in a post-post-feminist narrative in which it is proposed that sexual emancipation may be achieved through emotional disengagement. Whatever light “Waiting to Be Heard” does or does not shed on the awful death of Meredith Kercher, it offers a dispiriting account of prevailing mores. It is not new for students to “give casual sex a chance.” (Today’s twenty-year-olds may be surprised to learn that even their parents might have tried it.) It is new for girls to strive to adopt the sexual behavior of the most opportunistic guy on campus. “I wanted sex to be about empowerment and pleasure, not about Does this person like me? Will he still like me tomorrow?” Knox writes. But if empowerment, that much abused and much diminished term, means anything it means being able to say no as well as yes, without censure or shame.

Mead's point is subtle and finely argued, but there's a faint whiff of disgust in it, isn't there? The comparison Mead makes to Portrait of a Lady does something to honor Knox's own desires and agency as she set out for Italy, but then the knife turns, and it turns on the question of Knox's attitude about sex. I mean, if an adult woman wants to "adopt the sexual behavior of the most opportunistic guy on campus," shouldn't she be allowed to? Isn't that her prerogative? Granted, The Stranger hasn't gotten our copy yet, so I'm just spouting off here. But isn't there something a little dispiriting in what Mead's saying, too?

...A tweet ID’ing Tripathi as a suspect rocketed around the Internet last week after the FBI released images of the suspects. The Atlantic chronicled the spread of misinformation, beginning with a tweet by a user named Greg Hughes.

Reporters from media outlets including Politico, BuzzFeed and Newsweek retweeted Tripathi’s name, Alexis Madrigal reported...

Reddit played a role in spreading the misinformation too. And so did Slog.

And now this Brown University student has been found dead, floating in Providence's waters.

UPDATE: It appears he may have died some time ago, and that the misidentification happened after his death (thank you, commenters). So Twitter just made his family's life more of a living hell.

Nothing like a press release from the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) to cheer up your day:

The time for spring cleaning is here, and with it, the risk of exposure to serious animal-carried diseases like hantavirus and rabies. The Department of Health recommends taking precautions when cleaning areas where wild animals may have been. Visible droppings, nests, dead rodents or bats are signs of animals that can carry these dangerous diseases.

“Although these illnesses are rare, they can be deadly,” says State Health Officer Dr. Maxine Hayes.

The news release page on the DOH web site is always an uplifting read. For example, in recent months I've enjoyed "Tick season is here and the state Department of Health is collecting them," "Chicks and ducklings can carry Salmonella, putting kids at risk," and of course the classic "Seattle psychologist suspended indefinitely due to mental illness."

Happy spring!

Journalism's Best Week Ever™ continues with the news that Reuters accidentally published George Soros's obituary a few minutes ago. Here's their tweet about it:

Reuters published an obituary of George Soros in error. Reuters withdrew the article as soon as it appeared.
— Reuters Top News (@Reuters) April 18, 2013

Unfortunately, that's a lie. The obituary was not withdrawn as soon as it was posted—at the moment, you can still access the obituary. Just in case Reuters ever does get around to withdrawing it, I've posted it below.

George Soros, enigmatic financier, liberal philanthropist dies at XX

By Todd Eastham
WASHINGTON, XXX | Thu Apr 18, 2013 5:41pm EDT

(Reuters) - George Soros, who died XXX at age XXX, was a predatory and hugely successful financier and investor, who argued paradoxically for years against the same sort of free-wheeling capitalism that made him billions.

The rest is after the jump.

He was known as "the man who broke the Bank of England" for selling short the British pound in 1992 and helping force the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, which devalued the pound and earned Soros more than $1 billion.

And his Soros Fund Management was widely blamed for helping trigger the Asian financial crisis of 1997, by selling short the Thai baht and Malaysian ringgit.

"Subsequently, Prime Minister Mahatir of Malaysia accused me of causing the crisis, a wholly unfounded accusation," Soros wrote in The Crisis of Global Capitalism: Open Society Endangered," in 1998.

"We were not sellers of the currency during or several months before the crisis; on the contrary ... we were purchasing ringgits to realize profits on our earlier speculation."

Still, economist Paul Krugman, was one of many observers who accused Soros of helping trigger the crisis.

In 1999, Krugman wrote that "nobody who has read a business magazine in the last few years can be unaware that these days there really are investors who not only move money in anticipation of a currency crisis, but actually do their best to trigger that crisis for fund and profit."

Still, Soros has written extensively on the folly of what he has called free market "fundamentalism," the belief of many conservative economists that markets will correct themselves with no need for government intervention.

In Soros' view, markets and investors are subject to "mood" swings, or a prevailing positive or negative bias which can be exploited by savvy investors but which inevitably lead to damaging market bubbles and boom/bust cycles.

An enigma, wrapped in intellect, contradiction and money.

A Jew born in Hungary as the Nazis were gaining power in Germany, Soros survived World War Two and then emigrated to Great Britain, where he earned a degree from the London School of Economics in 1952, and landed his first job in the financial industry largely through pure stubborn chutzpah.

OPEN SOCIETY INSTITUTE

While at the London School, Soros studied under the economist and philosopher Karl Popper and a main vehicle for his philanthropy, the Open Society Institute, is named for Popper's two-volume work, "The Open Society and Its Enemies."

In that work, Popper develops the philosophy of reflexivity, a theory first articulated by William Thomas in the 1920s that posits that individual biases enter into market transactions, coloring the perception of economic fundamentals. Soros has attributed his own financial success in part to his understanding of the reflexive effect.

Key to understanding that effect is recognizing when markets are in a condition of near-equilibrium, or in disequilibrium. Soros has observed that when markets are rising or falling rapidly, they are typically marked by rising disequilibrium, and the dispassionate investor can capitalize on that recognition.

While Soros has benefited enormously from this understanding (Forbes put his wealth in 2013 at $19 billion, making him the world's 30th richest person, not counting the roughly $8 billion he has given away through various charitable entities he controls), he has argued nevertheless for strong central government regulation to correct for and counterbalance the excesses of greed, fear and the free market.

Popper's idea of fallibilism, which posits that anything one believes may in fact be wrong, is another key principle that has guided Soros in his career, and his philanthropy.

Soros' philanthropy since the 1970s, when he began funding the studies of black students at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, has been marked as much by his personal journey as by the needs of the communities he has set out to serve.

His efforts through the Open Society Institute and the Soros Foundations have been skewed toward the effort to promote democratic values in the post-Soviet economies of Central and Eastern Europe, where he witnessed the rise of communism in Hungary after World War Two.

"The bulk of his enormous winnings (as an investor and speculator) is now devoted to encouraging transitional and emerging nations to become 'open societies,'" former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker wrote in the foreword to Soros' "The Alchemy of Finance" (2003).

"Open," Volcker wrote, "not only in the sense of freedom of commerce but - more important - tolerant of new ideas and different modes of thinking and behavior."

PHILANTHROPY, POLITICS

Soros also pledged $50 million in 2006 to the Millennium Promise, led by economist Jeffrey Sachs, to provide educational, agricultural and medical aid to help poor villages in Africa. And the Open Society Institute has expanded its giving to more than 60 countries around the world, giving away roughly $600 million a year.

Soros was an early supporter of the peaceful transformation of the Solidarity movement in Poland and Open Society Institute programs were considered by many Western observers to be a key factor in the success of the "Rose Revolution" in Georgia.

While his philanthropy has earned him friends around the world, his political giving has earned him both friends and enemies. Former President George W. Bush, who Soros blamed for turning the United States into "the main obstacle to a stable and just world order," was perhaps the biggest single target of his political wrath.

"By declaring a 'war on terror' after Sept. 11, we set the wrong agenda for the world," Soros told Newsweek magazine in a 2006 interview. "When you wage war, you inevitably create innocent victims."

In a bid to stop Bush's re-election, Soros donated $23.5 million to more than 500 liberal and progressive groups during the 2003-2004 U.S. election cycle.

Other causes that have attracted Soros' generosity include drug policy reform. He donated $1.4 million to promote California's Proposition 5 in 2008, a failed initiative that would have expanded drug rehabilitation programs as alternatives to prison for non-violent drug offenders, and $400,000 to the successful 2008 Massachusetts initiative to decriminalize possession of less than an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana.

He has also been a vocal supporter of the right to die in dignity, revealing in 1994 that he had offered to help his own mother, a member of the Hemlock Society, commit suicide.

While Soros' life has been marked by remarkable success in his far-flung endeavors, it has not been without defeat. His investment in France's Societe Generale following Jacques Chirac's aggressive program of privatization led to charges of insider trading, which he disputed, and eventual conviction and the payment of a small penalty.

And he was a minority partner in a group that failed to acquire the Washington Nationals Major League baseball team.

But these failings stand out in the life of this remarkably successful Hungarian-American financier, philanthropist and thinker, in contrast to his stubborn refusal to fail in virtually every other venture.

Strewn among the week's tales of gun-wielding toddlers and ambitious heroin scams is this local horror:

FRIDAY, APRIL 12 In worse news, the week continues in Seattle, where today KING 5 News obtained surveillance video capturing the final moments of Mauriceo Bell, the 42-year-old Seattle man who died last Sunday morning in the downtown Metro bus tunnel, where he'd fallen on a moving escalator and was strangled by his clothes. "Surveillance shows him staggering, leaning on the rail for support, and towards the bottom, falling backwards," reports KING 5. "Bell died at the bottom of the escalator, strangled by his own clothing." Important fact #1: "KING 5 has found that particular escalator was not up-to-date on repairs and maintenance... Checking inspection reports on the state Labor & Industries website, it appears Metro owns and operates 78 escalators and elevators. In almost every case, the reports show required repairs not completed and boxes that would signify the work has been done not checked off. Some are weeks overdue, some months overdue. Some go back to 2011. KING 5 found only four out of 78 appeared to be up to date." Important fact #2: "Bell was a father of four and 'a good standup father,' his younger brother says, despite having a long record of run-ins with the law, mostly drug related," reports KING 5, acknowledging that police found a half-empty brandy bottle in Bell's back pocket. "But [Bell's brother] has a message to anybody jumping to conclusions about Bell's character or the circumstances of his death. 'No matter what you say about him, he paid taxes, too. He should have been able to trust his transit system,' he said. 'And isn't that what we're supposed to do if we're inebriated? Take the bus home? Take transit?'"

Condolences to the family of Mauriceo Bell, who will likely end up very sad gazillionaires.

Remembering Blair Butterworth

A memorial service for longtime Democratic political consultant Blair Butterworth will be held Sunday, April 21, 10:30 a.m., at Town Hall, Seattle. Butterworth died March 29 at age 74, after a long battle with cancer.

I really liked Butterworth. I get along just fine with nearly all the consultants (secretly, even some of the Republican ones!), but by the time I met Butterworth he had settled into a wise old uncle role that I found both welcoming and instructive. Butterworth had a knack for being brutally blunt without ever coming off as either unfriendly or dismissive. And he was almost always good for a quotable quip:

Butterworth is admirably succinct when asked what he thinks of Vance's contention that the Republicans have a new message and less abrasive tone that will put them back in the game. "It's bullshit. Vance is in denial," he says. Butterworth contends that since 1988, when Pat Robertson's Christian soldiers hijacked the Republican Party caucuses, the state's Republican base has been dominated by anti-government wackos: "It's awfully hard to recruit a great athlete to play on your team if you hate the game."

Politics is a nasty, adversarial game, and it's got to be played that way if you're playing to win. Beyond his skills as a political operative, Butterworth's gift was that he excelled at this profession without ever losing his humanity or his sense of humor. He will be missed.

Of course these fuckers have to get in on it:

The Westboro Baptist Church gleefully announced via Twitter that it will "picket [the] funerals of those dead by Boston Bombs" after two explosions rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three, and injuring at least 150. Naturally, the WBC welcomed this development, as it regards any and all disasters as punishment from god for America's supposed moral decline, particularly gay marriage.

For those of you saying that everyone should just agree to ignore the Westboro Baptist Church: It's relatively easy to ignore a troll online, but when they're picketing a funeral of a loved one, it becomes impossible to ignore.

I can't process this and I can't get over it. So I'm sharing it with you, even though many of you may already have seen it.

From CNN:

A Canadian teenager, who was allegedly gang-raped and bullied, has died, her family said.

Rehtaeh Parsons, 17, was hospitalized after she tried to hang herself Thursday. The high school student from Halifax, Nova Scotia, was taken off life support Sunday.

The teen was bullied for more than a year after the alleged sexual assault in November 2011 when she was 15, her family said.

In addition to the sexual assault, a photo taken during the incident was circulated to friends via text and online, and she developed suicidal thoughts as a result, according to her family.

We all know oh so well that bullying teenagers can kill them (finding all five of those links took about 30 seconds). Here's hoping that one more story, and a story as horrifying as "teenage girl raped and then slutshamed to death for it," serves as a spur in the side of this complex network of interconnected humans, of which we are all a part, to be slightly less shitty. And as a warning sign to parents, schools, and law enforcement to take this stuff as seriously as possible.

I needed to take a brain-bath after I spent a little too much time reading about this. So if you need that, too, here you go: a bunch of pictures of a baby covered in puppies.

Read Write Web wins the inessential race today with a dumb blog post written by someone who's hoping to piggyback some pageviews on the news of Roger Ebert's death. Here's the nut of the post:

I know Roger Ebert like most of you. I know him from his many film review shows, from his numerous and well-written movie reviews syndicated in hundreds of newspapers, and his many appearances on late-night talk shows. It was through Twitter, however, where I felt most close to him.

Now that Ebert has died, should I unfollow him? Should you? Is there a protocol for this?

This is the question you should bring up the next time someone says there are no stupid questions, just to prove them wrong. Some things should not be blogged. Some ideas that you idly consider while taking a shit should just remain inside your brain until they starve to death from lack of stimulation.

The great comic book artist, who helped drag superhero comic books out of the stodgy Golden Age and into a more modern era, has died. He was 87. Infantino drew some of the greatest comic book covers of all time, including this one, this one, and this one. If you're looking for more of his artwork, I suggest checking the Infantino tag on Tumblr.

This is so sad. The Sun Times just reported on Twitter:

There is a hole that can't be filled. One of the greats has left us. Roger Ebert has passed away at the age of 70. suntm.es/Z4EIOF
— Suntimes (@Suntimes) April 4, 2013

Just two days ago, Ebert reported that his cancer had returned, but he was still full of plans for the future. He leaves behind a tremendous body of work that will influence film critics for many years to come. <del>The Esquire profile of him from 2010, which hopefully will be pulled out from behind a paywall soon,</del> Neil Steinberg's obituary in the Sun Times gets it right.

Former council member Cheryl Chow:

Cheryl Chow, one of the most respected Asian-American leaders in Western Washington, died Friday after a long battle with brain cancer, her family members have confirmed. She was 66...

In August 2012, Chow revealed on KING 5 that she was gay—a secret she kept her whole life. At the time, she and her partner Sarah Morningstar had been together more than 10 years.

Before she came out publicly, chow shared her news with her beloved drill team. “I wanted them to have a role model that wasn't afraid to say anymore 'I'm gay and that's okay,’” she said... "But if I can save one child from feeling bad or even committing suicide because they were gay, then I would have succeeded in my last crusade,” Chow said.

Blair Butterworth:

Blair Butterworth served, over a 36-year period, as a political consultant and strategist for Washington governors, helped topple a governor whose campaign he had managed, and worked for mayoral candidates and such causes as Washington’s “Death with Dignity” Initiative 1000 in 2008.

Butterworth has died of cancer after a lengthy illness. His death was disclosed Friday afternoon on the Facebook page of U.S. Rep. Denny Heck, who described his longtime friend as “a class act to the end.” Butterworth was a tall, imposing, deep-voiced presence, a person who managed to act a bit self-important while poking fun at himself for acting a bit self-important.

Rest in peace, you guys.

Fun fact: As a stage actor, Griffiths was renowned for chastising audience members in both London and New York whose cell phones disrupted performances.

Show Me the Way to Go Home: A Monologue About Love and Dying with Dignity

In Show Me the Way to Go Home, Lisa Koch makes her audience fall in love with her father and then she lets them watch him die.

Through a combination of storytelling, songs, and emails, Koch pulls up an extra chair at the family dinner table and introduces us to the man who raised her—a man who spent 30 years as a sixth grade teacher and collected bad jokes with ardor.

"How do you compliment a woman from Arkansas?"
"Nice tooth."

A slideshow of family photos plays on a screen behind her as she recounts the email she got from her mother, breaking her father's diagnosis of stomach cancer, aka "The Bastard." She walks us through hospital visits, treatment schedules, conversations with Dr. God, her father's born-again physician, with the grace of a woman raised to process all news—both good and bad—with humor.

Koch talks about her father's decision to use Death with Dignity, the Oregon and Washington law that allows terminal patients to access drugs to end their lives at their own pace—although accessing the drugs is nearly impossible when your attending physician is nicknamed "Dr. God." (Death with Dignity requires the cooperation of at least two doctors and a pharmacist.)

She recounts standing in the family kitchen, breaking open 100 capsules of Seconal—the drug that will allow her father to slip into a coma and peacefully die—and mixing it with applesauce. She gives her audience permission to laugh, even as they cry: "Whatever you do, don't lick the spoon," Koch recounts joking with her brother.

Show Me the Way to Go Home is a fitting eulogy for a great father and teacher. It will resonate with anyone who's checked a loved one into hospice care, but more than that, it's the kind of graceful, loving tribute we would all give to our dearly departed, if we had but the talent for storytelling.

You can catch it tonight and tomorrow at the Theater Off-Jackson, in the International District.

(Theatre Off-Jackson, 409 7th S, March 21-23, 7:30 pm, $15 adv/$18 door, all ages, tickets available here)

The former governor—who brought us our death with dignity law—is dead at 76.

UPDATE: Every politician on earth has issued a statement, and Gardner's family has sent an obit explaining that, although Gardner pioneered death with dignity in Washington State, he didn't qualify "because Parkinson’s itself is not fatal." I've posted them all after the jump.

Gardner's family:

TACOMA, Wash. - Booth Gardner, the charismatic Democrat who ousted Washington’s last Republican governor in 1984, launched the Basic Health Care program and later used his long personal battle with Parkinson’s disease to spearhead the state’s death with dignity law, has died. Gardner was 76.

Gardner died March 15 of complications related to Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Because Parkinson’s itself is not fatal, the death with dignity law approved by voters in 2008 did not apply to Gardner.

“We’re very sad to lose my father, who had been struggling with a difficult disease for many years, but we are relieved to know that he’s at rest now and his fight is done,” said Gardner’s daughter, Gail Gant.

Gardner, an heir to the Weyerhaueser timber fortune, was Pierce County Executive and little known elsewhere in the state when he entered the governor’s race in 1983. His campaign team adopted the signature slogan Booth Who?, and he went on to defeat now-U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott in the Democratic primary and upset incumbent Republican John Spellman in the general election.

“Governor Gardner was a progressive visionary ahead of his time. His leadership helped give us environmental and land-use laws that shaped the successful Washington of today. And he championed gay rights and basic health care access for the poor long before they were popular,” said former Gov. Christine Gregoire. “He also leaves a lasting legacy of nurturing a generation of leaders, including me.”

Gardner disliked many of the public speaking aspects of campaigning and governing but was famous for his common touch both on the campaign trail and in the halls of Olympia. Although he had an MBA from Harvard University, the charismatic and popular Gardner liked to refer to his management style as MBWA – Management By Walking Around.

“Booth Garner was one of the most confident, compassionate people I have ever known,” said Ron Dotzauer, Gardner’s campaign manager in his first run for governor. “Even though he came from great wealth, he had a deep ability to connect with people and they sensed that he truly cared about them.”

As governor, Gardner built a progressive record and was in many ways ahead of his time. He championed education initiatives, including funding for early childhood education and the University of Washington. He launched the state’s Basic Health Care program, the first program of its kind in the nation, to provide health services to the working poor. He appointed the first minority justice to the Washington State Supreme Court, Charles Z. Smith, and was hailed for recognizing Indian tribal sovereignty. He worked to advance the careers of minorities and women in state government, including now former Gov. Gregoire, and he championed gay rights. He banned smoking in state workplaces and helped usher in modern growth management and environmental regulations to rein in sprawl, clean up waterways and protect farms, wetlands and wildlife.

Later in life, Gardner agreed with the critics who faulted his rocky relationship with the Legislature and his reluctance to horse-trade and cut deals with lawmakers.

“I hated it!” Gardner later said. “It was so distasteful to me. I almost wish I could do it all over again. It was a missed opportunity. I should have been better at it.”

He won reelection easily in 1988 and served as the chair of the National Governors Association. He chose not to run for a third term. President Bill Clinton appointed him ambassador to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which later became the World Trade Organization.

A year after his retirement in 1994, Gardner was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He remained active in public life, however, teaming with former Republican Gov. Dan Evans to champion spending for higher education and speaking out against a proposed expansion of casino gambling in Washington.

He also became an activist in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. He helped found the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center, which offers specialists, physical therapy and other assistance to patients and their families.

In 2008, in what he described as his last campaign, Gardner became the public face of Washington’s Death With Dignity initiative. The measure passed overwhelmingly, with nearly 58 percent of the vote.

A 2009 documentary on the campaign, “The Last Campaign of Booth Gardner,” was nominated for an Academy Award.

Gardner was born in 1936 in Tacoma to Evelyn Booth Gardner and Bryson R. “Brick” Gardner, who were both from wealthy and prominent families. Their marriage ended in divorce when he was 4 years old, and his mother married Norton Clapp, a powerful member of the family behind Weyerhaeuser Co. Gardner’s mother and younger sister died in a plane crash a decade later, leaving him wealthy at a young age. Their deaths were just one of the challenges throughout his life – Gardner called them “curve balls” – that imbued him with compassion and determination to “make a difference.”

When he was a student at the University of Washington, Gardner, a natural athlete, took a part-time job working for the Seattle Parks Department and began coaching youth sports in the city’s predominantly African American district through the Central Area Youth Association. The experience helped stoke an interest in public service.

“I realized I could make a difference in people’s lives,” Gardner told journalist and historian John Hughes, author of “Booth Who? A Biography of Booth Gardner.”

He won his first campaign, an upstart bid for a state Senate seat, in 1970 when he was 34.

Gardner, who was married twice, is survived by his daughter, Gail Gant, his son Douglas Gardner, eight grandchildren, and two half-brothers, Bill Clapp and Steve Clapp. In the past seven years he has lived in North Tacoma and particularly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and attending their athletic events, graduations and other milestones.

His funeral will be private, but a public memorial is being planned in Tacoma.

Governor Jay Inslee:

Trudi and I send our condolences to the Gardner family and the tens of thousands of people around Washington who considered the governor their friend. Booth Gardner was one of the great leaders of our state. He served us all with the highest standards and with never-ending humanity.

He helped prepare Washington for the 21st Century. His accomplishments are immense – from creating the Basic Health Plan to enacting the Growth Management Act – and he touched every part of life in our state. Booth made a personal connection with everyone he met – from children visiting the capital to the lawmakers he persuaded to always act for the greater good of Washington. When I was a young legislator, he showed me great kindness and helped me learn what it means to serve. I’ll always be personally indebted to him.

After his life of public service, Booth was open with us about his health. And he led us to a respectful discussion about the dignity of life and death.

We will all miss Booth and I know all Washingtonians join me in keeping him and his family in our hearts.

Representative Jim McDermott:

I’m deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Governor Booth.

Though we ran against each other, we worked very closely on the passing and implementation of the Basic Health Plan and other legislation. He never let politics get in the way of doing what he thought was best for the people and I was proud to call him my good friend.

He was a leader of integrity and passion and a man before his time. As Governor he worked tirelessly for the State of Washington, but he also showed that public service doesn’t have to be in the Capitol. Despite his considerable health limitations, he led the fight for end-of-life care with courage and vigor. In the end, he ensured the ability to both live a dignified life with access to health care and end life in a dignified way of one’s own choosing.

They say a person dies two deaths: the death of the body and a second when stories about him stop being told. It will be a very long time before we run out of stories about Governor Booth.

Mayor Mike McGinn:

Booth Gardner was a compassionate and thoughtful man. His strong values of fairness and equality led him in his decades-long work to improve our health care and education systems. Washington State is a better place because of his leadership. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

King County executive Dow Constnatine:

Washington state has lost a great leader, and its people have lost a great friend with the passing of Governor Booth Gardner.

Governor Gardner was known as a man who could talk to anyone, because he treated everyone the same way—like a fellow human being. His two terms in office are best remembered for the major steps forward our state took in how we educate our children, how we protect the environment, and how we care for the less fortunate in our society.

Booth was that rare political leader who was liked by both his allies and his adversaries. He will be greatly missed.

This obituary of Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist in the Guardian has some strange tidbits from the historical locker. The man was surrounded by death, and volunteered for death, but somehow survived to the age of 90.

Von Kleist had been chosen as the officer to model a new uniform for Hitler, and Von Stauffenberg proposed that he wear a suicide vest underneath, and detonate it when he stood next to the dictator.

Years later, Von Kleist remembered explaining the suicide plot to his father, who paused only briefly before telling his 22-year-old son: "Yes, you have to do this."

"Fathers love their sons and mine certainly did, and I had been quite sure he would say no," Von Kleist recalled. "But, as always, I had underestimated him."

That plot didn't work out. Neither did the more famous plot Von Kleist was involved in, but somehow survived.

But when news spread that Hitler had survived, the plot crumbled and Von Stauffenberg, Von Kleist's father and scores of others were arrested and executed in an orgy of revenge killings. Some were hanged by the neck with piano wire. Von Stauffenberg was shot by firing squad.

Von Kleist himself was arrested and questioned at length by the Gestapo, and sent to a concentration camp, but then inexplicably let go and returned to combat duty.

He survived that, too. Von Kleist died at home instead.
