You can watch the TV footage above.</p> <p>It's a heartwarming tale. Writing at Pandagon, Amanda Marcotte thinks so too. But reading the comment threads on various posts, she noticed something interesting. The commenters congratulate Wendell on what a great kid he is or condemn both the cat-torturing kids and the society that allows their abhorrent behavior to flourish. <em><a href="http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/03/25/if-only-we-could-talk-about-abusing-women-like-we-do-abusing-cats/">But...</a></em></p> <blockquote><p>Missing from the discussion: Wondering if <strong>the cat was asking for it</strong> by being so cute and easy to torture. Blaming male hormones or implying that because it&#8217;s so sexually gratifying to torture a cat, some boys can&#8217;t help themselves. Making excuses for the cat torturers by saying that they don&#8217;t understand the difference between playing with a cat who wants to play with you and torturing it. Claiming that while cat torture is bad, we shouldn&#8217;t be too eager to punish the cat torturers.</p> <p>A lot of people in comments said that we should teach boys not to torture cats, specifically noting cultural changes that could be instituted to prevent cat torture. These people were not subjected to an angry flame war where they were accused of being stupid, called by misogynist or racist names, or told that they should be tortured themselves until they understood that <strong>the only way to stop cat torture is for cats to defend themselves</strong>. It was understood that cats do try to defend themselves, but unfortunately, self-defense is sometimes not enough to prevent cat torture. It was accepted that cat torture is a crime that is cultural in origin, and that by changing the culture, we can prevent it.</p></blockquote> <p>By now it should be obvious where Marcotte is going. "You can't put a price on love," said RASKC Manager Dr. Gene Mueller in a news release.</p> <p>Well, actually you <em>can</em> put a price on love. The normal fee for adult cat adoptions is $55, but will be waived through the end of the month. The adoption fee for kittens younger than six months will remain at $100. A few months later, I heard that they were passing through Portland, and my enthusiasm skyrocketed when I learned that they were going to be in Seattle shortly after.</p> <p><strong>Please set the scene for your visit to the show. Time, date, place, companions, other audience members.</strong></p> <p>Oh! This is a real tale of heartbreak. I wanted to take the object of my affection for his birthday, so we picked a date that worked and I bought tickets way in advance for a Sunday night show on opening weekend. We showed up to the venue&#8212;the Stone Soup Theater in Wallingford&#8212;stupid early, since I was worried about not getting a seat (?). Nobody was outside and we waited for a really long time until a woman wearing cat ears came out of the theater and told us the performance had been canceled since nobody had bought tickets! DEVASTATING. Anyway, we picked a different day to go a week later, but for an earlier show. The crowd was a mix of people, pretty much what you might expect at a cat circus, i.e. people wearing ironic tshirts and glasses. And one loud toddler.</p> <p><strong>What happened upon entering the venue?</strong></p> <p>The theater is really small, so we pretty much just grabbed the best seats close to the stage. It ended up being really packed! </p> <p>The stage was set with lots of props covered in purple carpet and there was a male Acrocat carny putting cats into little carriers located in the wings.</p> <p><strong>What happened next&#8212;the show, or something unexpected? OR BOTH?</strong>...</p> <p>The male Acrocat carny came out with a giant tray of furry cat ears and told everybody that the show wasn't going to start until he sold all of the cat ears, which was really only a half-joke. Then some people bought some ears. THEN the show started.</p> <p><strong>What did the show consist of?</strong></p> <p>Some light humor and a lot of cat tricks and a rollicking performance by a cat band. And some trained rats and a chicken. The cats do things like turn on lightbulbs, balance on balls, push shopping carts, walk a balance beam and do flying feats, etc. The whole thing is ridiculously charming. The star of the show is a cat named Tuna that seems like a grump. </p> <p>Also, the woman that runs the circus brings foster cats with her on the road that you can adopt and they are so cute that they made me cry.</p> <p><strong>Tuna seemed like a grump? Please explain the cats' body language, etc.</strong></p> <p>She is a very pretty white cat with kind of sensual eyes. Maybe not so much a grump as a primadonna, because she could barely be bothered to come out of her cage to start the show. She is the Naomi Campbell of cat circus performers. SENSUAL EYES</p> <p><strong>What were the other cats all about?</strong></p> <p>Well, the main Acrocat lady/ringmaster does a whole spiel about all of the cats in the show, but I've pretty much forgotten everything about them except for that maybe one was the dumb one? Oh, and the guitar player, Pinky, has leg cancer. Poor kitty! </p> <p>I do know that all of the cats are rescue cats that live with the ringmaster in Chicago. She must have about 20 cats, all told.</p> <p><strong>What advice would you give to those who haven't seen the show yet?</strong></p> <p>Don't buy tickets for the Sunday night show at 9pm. Bring cash so that you can buy the merchandise. Be prepared for your black heart to be WARMED.</p> <p><strong>Anything we've missed?</strong></p> <p>Oh! There was a groundhog too, but I can't remember what trick she did. But&#8212;as you know if you got to the end of the story&#8212;the cat survived. Her name was Darcy, according to the boyfriend of the neighbor. All of my attempts to find out more about Darcy's fate came up empty, though. A source who helped perform surgery on her declined to be interviewed, explaining she was not authorized to speak to me. </p> <p>But <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/the-woman-in-606/Content?oid=14524160#comment-14539255">now we have an update,</a> courtesy of Kara Main-Hester of the Seattle Animal Shelter:</p> <blockquote><p>Just a note on the cat in the story. She was named Hope and was put through surgery by the Seattle Animal Shelter. </p> <p>We recently got an update from the adopter: <br />"We ended up naming Hope, Nadia! Which means "hope" in russian. Visiting with kitties does not come cheap, however. At Calico, one of Tokyo&#8217;s most popular cat cafes, one hour of cuddling costs 900 yen [$10.90/hr], with 200 yen [$2.42] for each additional 15 minutes. Can you believe it?</p> <p><strong>The Wictims Win</strong>: President Obama <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-02-11/obama-says-contraceptive-rule-finds-balance-on-religious-rights.html">bows to the American Catholic church</a> by withdrawing the White House's plan to require private employers (including religious organizations, like all those Catholic hospitals) to provide health insurance that covers contraception. Instead, insurance companies will be required to provide that coverage free of charge. The compromise with Catholics may seem like a miracle, considering that Obama is a Muslim. But the red-wing blogs, bloviators, and email alerts were just getting going. It's hard to imagine Obama being able to comfortably skirt this issue while seeking reelection to the White House. Here's the <em>NYT</em> quoting Obama explaining that it was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/11/health/policy/obama-to-offer-accommodation-on-birth-control-rule-officials-say.html">largely a political calculation</a>:</p> <blockquote><p>&#8220;After the many genuine concerns that have been raised over the last few weeks, as well as, frankly, the more cynical desire on the part of some to <strong>make this into a political football</strong>, it became clear that spending months hammering out a solution was not going to be an option,&#8221; Mr. Obama said on Friday. </p></blockquote> <p><strong>My TCW</strong>: The religious liberty and conscience argument being raised by the Catholic church, which is ostensibly worried about paying for birth control, (and legislators who are expressing concern about florists and photographers being forced to serve gay couples) has less to do with contraception and gay marriage, and more to do with a clever sleight of hand. No longer is the Catholic Church bullying women and LGBT people, in this framing, they're the victims being forced to forgo their religious convictions.
