I, like many Seattle residents, was disappointed to learn last week that there would not be fireworks this year at Gas Works Park. That&#8217;s why I am delighted to announce that we are working with Seafair and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to craft a new and sustainable plan for Fourth of July fireworks in Seattle. <strong>I am optimistic that we will indeed have fireworks this year in our city.</strong> I thank Seafair and the Seattle Metro Chamber of Commerce for their commitment to Seattle and for their leadership. Like the non-profits they serve, they need <strong>your help</strong> to stay funded. That's why you're going to sign up for <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Event?event=16365889">Seattle Works Day</a>, held on Saturday May 18 starting at 12 p.m.</p> <p>Your day will start at noon when you will join a team of other volunteers for a few hours of awesome volunteer work. There are all kinds of projects you can join in on, and they range from organizing a library at Sanislo Elementary to working at ROOTS Young Adult Shelter. Then, at 3:30, you will go to the Seattle Center's Fisher Pavillion for food, drink, fun, and a free T-shirt. You can't eat because somewhere in the city, kickball is happening. You can't sleep because <strong>ditto goes for talent pageants</strong>. Fighting FOMO is tough, but I have a little trick for fighting this pervasive fear. Come closer and I'll tell you. </p> <p><small>Closer.</small></p> <p>My secret is called <em>The Stranger's</em> <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/EventSearch?eventSection=295706">News-and-Politics calendar</a>, which handily tracks all the fun politics and newsy events you don't want to miss. Come closer and I'll give you a taste.</p> <p><small>Closer.</small><br /><small><strong>Even closer!</strong></small></p> <p><strong>Genetic Roulette</strong>: Local movie nerds "Meaningful Movies" will be screening <em>Genetic Roulette</em> at 7 p.m. tonight at the <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Event?event=16252933">Keystone Church</a>. The film discusses the health implications of GMOs, and it'll be followed by a discussion on a state measure in Olympia that would require retail outlets to label food made with genetically engineered ingredients. (<a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/wait-thats-gmo-too/Content?oid=16112972">More about that bill here</a>!)</p> <p><strong>A Workshop on Art and Activism</strong>: The Vera Project is hosting a three-part workshop and panel series that will take place <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Event?event=16201066">every third Thursday</a> from now until June. The first panel, Art and Activism happening on <strong>March 21</strong>, features several local artists discussing how they are "using art as a catalyst for activism." The cost is $10, but you can bring a food donation in lieu of the ticket price. </p> <p><strong>Burke Trivia Night at the College Inn Pub</strong>: Do you love science and beer? (WHO DOESN'T LOVE SCIENCE AND BEER?) For you beer-guzzling nerds, the Burke Museum hosts a trivia night every first Thursday of the month at the <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Event?event=16191418">College Inn Pub</a>. The next one is April 4. It's nightmarish because it often doesn't respond to "last-resort antibiotics" called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbapenem">carbapenems</a>. The fatality rate is reportedly about 50 percent in people who contract serious infections. <a href="http://healthyliving.msn.com/health-wellness/nightmare-bacteria-spreading-in-us-hospitals-nursing-homes-cdc-1">Some more</a>:</p> <blockquote><p>Although CRE bacteria are not yet found nationwide, they have increased fourfold within the United States in the past decade, with most cases reported in the Northeast.</p> <p>Health officials said they're concerned about the rapid spread of the bacteria, which can <strong>endanger the lives of patients and healthy people</strong>. Griffin, who lost his job during the <strong>economic meltdown caused by banks</strong> like Wells Fargo, was foreclosed on in November but is still living in the house pending eviction. </p> <p>Wells Fargo was unable to auction the house at market value recently and is holding on to the property. Now Griffin has a good job again and wants to make rent payments to the bank. He's even <strong>ready to buy back the house</strong> at market value.
