I agree, amateur is not a good word to apply to theater for exactly the reasons you have stated Brendan (in fact by that definition 95% of theater is amateur, including the big houses).

A better phrase is 'community theater'. Slightly misleading as there isn't any community theater in Seattle that I am aware of and that is a shame. It is side notion I thought about while reading these posts. Theater is Seattle is pretty much divided into artists and audience. There isn't a way for audience to participate in theater on their own, just for fun for their, you know - community.

The amateur border is too soft for a good definition—many at Washington Ensemble Theatre are "amateurs" with day jobs, but they're in a whole other league than Twelfth Night.

I draw the line at students. Everybody else, especially if they're wanting to get listed in the paper and ask for people's money, is fair game.

We don't focus on the consistently ramshackle companies, but it's only fair to check in with them once in awhile and let people know what's going on.

Out of curiosity, where does public art fit in to this scheme of amateurs? You've taken some stabs at the public poetry in this town, the Poetry on Buses and the like, and it seems to me that those (with a few exceptions here and there) would definitely fall under the "amateur" category.
