@11 i think that every parent who is in the public eye has the right to 100% determine how much and when their children will be seen. that is precisely what these parents are doing, i don't see hypocrisy in choosing to release your own photos, while discouraging paparazzi, or even legitimate press, from trampling the privacy of minors.

what is with drama-seeking: they are exposing the babies; they are color coordinated; something diabolical must be happening, what can i make up!

Maybe all the editors out there can run with this touching, fun, endearing shot, rather than a 'behind the bushes with a telephoto lens' stalker shot. I think this is shrewd on the Obamas part---give em' just enough.
I really don't want to make too big of a deal about this, but just last week wasn't there some uproar about "pictures of the children" being taken and how important their privacy is? I don't remember nearly so many pictures of Chelsea Clinton or the Bush twins being "released" by their parents. Yes, the Bush twins found ways to have their pictures taken, but that was hardly simultaneous with "official" photos being released all the time.

It seems to me (and I'm a huge supporter, going to the Inauguration, yadda yadda) that Obama doesn't mind using his kids in his own way and I'm somewhat bothered by the double standard.

Yes, because having a professional photographer follow them around wouldn't call out for criticism.
I think these photos are meant to be inviting and a peek into their lives, and less a chronicle of their day-to-day. I mean, it's their first day of school. That's a big event in every home.
