As for technical uniqueness: perhaps what I should have said was, a unique ID is important for computers and an easily distinguishable unique ID is important for humans. 'Greg,' 'greg,' and 'Greg F' may all be unique (depending on whether the file system is case-sensitive or not), but they are not necessarily easily distinguishable.

In a perfect Slog we would have commenter registration and this conversation would be moot. I'd be registered as 'Greg,' my name would have a link to my Slog profile, and you'd be registered as something else, with a link to your Slog profile. That would be simple; each would be both unique and distinguishable. No innocent bystanders would confuse us one for the other. Unfortunately the Slog does not have commenter registration yet, so for now we just type in whatever name(s) we go by and try to iron out any problems as they come up.

Sock puppetry is one problem; fortunately, the tech lords of Slog are pretty good about deleting those posts. The other major issue is substantially-similar-yet-technically-distinct monikers, which is what we have here. Maybe it seems like I'm hypersensitive about it, but when all you have to go on for identifying who's writing what is the name box and comment content, two people using similar monikers gets a little annoying. I got all up in your grill because, Turing be damned, I want to maintain distinguishability between the two of us.

Did you originally post as 'greg,' then 'Greg F'? I have no idea. All I can go on is the name you're going by and the text of your comment, which tells me relatively little. I'm sorry if you got tired of being constantly called out for using a moniker very like mine - I had no way of knowing whether it was several different guys named Greg or one who didn't take the suggestion.

You and I are different people. It is to both of our benefit that the distinction is clear. Often enough it seems like we have similar opinions, which further complicates the problem of similar monikers. Plus, a fair number of Slog regulars know me on Facebook, where along with my address and picture it shows that I am also a Greg F who lives in Seattle. You see how this becomes thornier? It is far, far easier for you to pick something very dissimilar to go by rather than for us to reheat this disagreement every month or so.

Do you go to Slog Happy Hour at all? If you can make it to the next one, I would love to talk with you in person. Tell you what: I'll even buy you a beer and introduce you to anybody you haven't met yet.

For the record:
1) W7ngman and I are about to hit the eight- month mark. I am completely in love with him and this is not some fling.
2) I guarantee I'm not the only person around here with irresponsible stories. I just gave up being ashamed of them a long time ago. Failing on the name was much more embarrassing. The attempt at anonymity was for the benefit of w7ngman, who unsurprisingly doesn't like it when random people on the internet call me a slut.
3) I like Mikki, and BA, and don't want to be involved in that argument.
