You fail to realize that all of that domestic abuse, unwanted pregnancies and premarital sex are not new to our world and neither is homosexuality. Extramarital affairs are nothing new either. When exactly is it do think this change happened? When, in history, can you actually point back to a time when any of that wasn't going on? But perhaps you also think that women should get their asses back in the kitchen and stop speaking up when the "man" of the house dare lay a finger on her in anger. That way you don't have to know about it ... that way you can convince yourself that it's not actually happening and that the great myth of the family value has been restored.

As for the original post: Economies are cyclical. They have always been cyclical, and always will be. Anyone with a fourth grade education can look up the figures to prove it.

HOWEVER, over time, the economic fluctuations have become less powerful, and recessions shorter and less severe than what they were, say, in the 19th century, where they were accompanied with little, if any, government intervention (whether Keynesian or Monetarist). If anything, the situation has gotten better rather than worse in this regard.

Now, as for this belief that child abuse comes from perceived increases in perceived sexual immorality amongst consenting adults: CITATION NEEDED.

We have increased government observation and enforcement of laws against child abuse in recent decades, so whether or not there was an actual increase in child abuse, we're going to see more of it, simply because child abuse is less likely to be swept under the rug, and more likely to end up with an adult in prison. We should expect, then, that child abuse rates, c.p., should be going down.

Of course, people had sex even in more conservative times, and even in the colonial era, it was quite common for brides to be pregnant. There's a difference between "we don't talk about it" and "we don't do it." Don't be silly, there is no time period, no place in the world ever, where people all followed this sexual standard of "one man, one woman, only having sex with each other, and only after being married."
