Please don't take offense Jen but the only thing painfully derivative is your writing style. If you are going to pose as an art critic provide something useful in you articles. I know it's only the Stranger but you should be able to provide something more informative and. My impression is your article is really about you or your writing.
I agree with Ben. I think Jen Graves has a chip on her shoulder about the whole MFA program and it really shows through her writing. Shame on you Jen. I saw the show and your account of each artists' piece was really half-hearted. If you don't like your job, go find something else that you would have more passion for.

My sense is that if a greater proportion of the review was devoted to some of the more substantial qualities of the work exhibited including conceptual frameworks, spatial considerations, etc., of the artists, and less to the awkwardness of the activity of writing by the author, something of more substance could have been created resulting in a review rather than what seems a mere glib, half-hearted, topical, description (which is starting to seem like standard fare in this city). I suppose this relates to the issue of accountability tied to critics or the lack there of and further, the importance of writers becoming acquainted with, to understand, the variation and subtleties that they are working with.
One significant thing that "happened" at UW, in Bo's case, is they abruptly cancelled the fibers program during her first year. That's right, of her 2 years of $$grad school$$, one of them was spent left alone, in a basement, with only one professor and I believe no fellow students. Fuck you, Chris Ozubko. That should be illegal.
