If Roberts is anything, it is aware of the historical importance of the work that he is doing, and his place in history.

Honestly, Citizens United wasn't really that big of a case. A lot of the cases that SCOTUS has had 5-4 conservative rulings on are things that are worthy of scolding, but will be looked upon as blips in history.

These two decisions will be remembered long after the justices are all dead, and I think Roberts knows that. I think he also prefers to be associated with a Loving v. Virginia style decision than a Dred Scott decision.

This past November, we put a notch into the arc of history. The US will have Same-Sex Marriage, said 3 states at the same time; and MN said they will not change their constitution to prohibit us.
