Of course, NOM and others point to Massachusetts having a low divorce rate, and states down south having a consistently HIGH divorce rate vs the entire northeast, because southern folks marry at a higher rate than we northerners. And yet:

"Of course, states with more marriages naturally have more chances for divorce. But the trend also holds up when one looks at divorces as a share of marriages. In states that recognize or perform gay marriages, the number of divorces in 2009 was 41.2 percent of the number of marriages. In the 36 other states for which 2009 data are available, it was 50.3 percent. Remove the outlier Nevada, the state with by far the lowest divorce rate by this metric (16.3 percent), likely due in part to Las Vegas's status as a wedding hotspot for out-of-state couples who may get married there but divorced elsewhere, and the figure jumps to 53.2 percent."
Massachusetts has had gay marriage for TEN YEARS this year. It also consistently has had the lowest, or among the lowest divorce rate in the entire country. Is there any more "proof" needed by the NOM-anderthals that homos marrying is a threat to no one, and least of all, to the institution of marriage?
Interestingly enough, Rhode Island's gay citizens can already marry the person they love, due to an executive order by Governor Chafee last year making out of state same sex marriages legally valid in RI. They just can't do it in their home state; they have to travel to a bordering state.

Which basically means that any Rhode Island legislator who votes against marriage equality is really only voting against the economic interests of their state.

If the State Senate wants to help the economy of Rhode Island they should pass this bill ASAP.

@21 You neglect human history and archaeology. Homo sapiens has been building new settlements upon the old for aeons. If parts of Manhattan flood, we'll just dump some more dirt on them and rebuild. The World Trade Center site and World Financial Center site were landfill on the riverbed. Some very large percentage of buildings in New York are less than 50 years old. Some have been torn down and replaced with something larger several times already.

It's the folks in single-family homes along the coasts and rivers, all over the world, who are certainly going to be displaced. Although the most severe impact worldwide is going to be the loss of arable land.

Oh for eff's sake. The real threat to the continued preeminence of marriage in Western society is the acceptance of cohabitation, which includes civil unions, illegitimacy, single parenthood and divorce. (Before anyone gets in a twist, please note that I didn't say that any of these things were good or bad, just that they lessen the preeminence of marriage.) If anything, the movement to allow same-sex marriage is bringing all the good things about marriage, like commitment, stability, legal rights, and economic advantages, into the public eye where everyone can see them.
