This is precisely what turns me off of these types of games in general; the mind-numbing repetition. Mission, mission, mission UP LEVEL! Mission, mission, mission, mission UP LEVEL! All more or less based on the same limited range of actions: shoot, shoot, 'splode, run, duck, run, shoot, jump, shoot, shoot, shoot.

Seriously, a good round of checkers or tic-tac-toe involves more cerebral processing than does the average video game...

@2 - A dear friend of the STD once said "My only problem with MMORPGs is the second M." As awesome as Leeeeeeroy Jenkins is to watch on YouTube, having to endure him and his ilk in order to service an addiction sounds unsustainable. For that matter, "addiction" doesn't seem much better than "work" as a metaphor for these dopamine-harvesting arrangements. We're looking for something better.

Most video games are essentially skinner-boxes, some are just more pared down than others. Operant response, dopamine lever or electric shock - they provide the psychological wages of problem-solving and competition in a carefully controlled environment. For some people this can be as addictive as gambling, if not usually quite as expensive or dehabilitating... And like gambling, the majority are able to enjoy video games without collapsing from heart failure in Korean internet cafes.

Marvel: Avengers Alliance is crank for a very deliberate gamer: the old-school JRPG fan who loves Marvel properties. It doesn't really have much to do with the gameplay alone, or the story alone. It's both, melded together into a nostalgic stew. It's not that it's addictive in the way that WoW is thought of as addictive; games like WoW don't hold my interest for long. It keeps you coming back through new storylines, periodic release of new characters and costumes, and exclusive characters earned only through PvP or limited-time events. I had to walk away myself after a while. Easily the most entertainingly diabolical Facebook game I've ever experienced.
