The PUBLIC component of the second amendment isn't being emphasized enough. combine that with bans on automatic weapons, semi automatics, andother canadian style gun control, you end up with say ten million guns not 280 million, gun death rates like canada, etc.

The Supreme Court has no part in the amendment process. They only matter to the extent that they would get to interpret whatever the amendment actually says.

The NRA needs to be fired from national politics. In fact, I rather want this clown to keep up his objectively ridiculous ranting so that more and more people start to see the NRA for what it is. It's not a civil rights group. There's this perception among conservatives that it's more or less the right's equivalent of the ACLU, and the more they come to realize that it's an industry lobby, the less cohesion American gun fanaticism will have.

There has been tension between Left and Right ever since Bacon's Rebellion a hundred years before the Revolutionary War. There have always been those with apocalyptic dreams of a major physical confrontation that have wanted to settle this dispute militarily. They seem to think that this struggle will go away if it is allowed to reach a climax in an act of mass violence.

That does not comport with history. Despite major armed flare-ups originating in class struggle such as the Civil War, the struggle continues, and ever will. Knowing that this disagreement will never end, I think that attempt to resolve it through violence are delusional, Pollyanna-ish fairy tales for the bloodthirsty set. You cannot win this conflict-the very idea of "winning" is based in the idea that by so doing said conflict will end, since you cannot tally up points and determine the winner till the end of the game. This game does not end, and therefore can have no winner.

Its better to resolve our differences in the political sphere, to continue this long and unending conflict between social classes in the legislature, wielding pens and paper and not guns or bullets. I'll grant that this doesn't satisfy the testosterone driven and primordial instincts developed over millennia of evolution, where spilling your opponent's blood was integral to your own survival. Our opponents are not cave bears, and we are not cave men. Contrary to our wiring as democracy may be, its the only logical response to an infinite struggle.

The difference between finite and infinite games is that the goal of the former is to end the game, and the goal of the latter is to extend play. Even if you kill the perpetrators of your opponent's ideology, the ideology itself does not die with your opponent. Therefore, it makes little sense to kill your opponent. it makes much more sense to address the ideology in debate.

Now, what would it take to successfully amend the Constitution to remove the Second Amendment? I believe that's simply unpossible.

Still, it may be that an Amendment clarifying or limiting the Second Amendment may be possible.

Anyway, let me add my peace-loving, liberal, internet alias to the list of people who would like to see LaPIerre's head on a stick/pike/platter/WW-I rifle. And you know what? I really don't care if it's metaphorical or not. So, please draw crosshairs on his picture and print it on the front page. (You know, "Live by the sword, die by the sword?") Let's get this conversation really going.

Okay, seriously, though, what would it take to start a campaign to repeal the Second Amendment? That seems to be the bottleneck preventing us living in a peaceful society, right there. Maybe it wasn't to start with, but the Court has expanded its interpretation to the point that sensible gun legislation is almost impossible. Do you know that there are probably over 10 million AR-15 pattern rifles in private hands in the U.S.? We've passed the critical mass point. A ban on new guns won't accomplish much of anything. Repeal the Second Amendment and let each state either add their own amendment to their constitutions or pass appropriate laws.

Ever notice how the NRA and its supporters accuse all of their opponents of being Communist? Well, this is why.

Fear of a Leftist rising has driven gun nuts crazy since before independence. Early in our national history, we over-reacted to the French Revolution by passing laws such as the Alien and Sedition Acts. This effectively put a cop in everybody's head; the mere accusation of having the wrong ideology was enough to ruin a citizen's life. You could be extremist in the right direction - the Right direction. But not the Left. The Left was the big bugaboo lurking in the corner, the monster under America's bed.

during the Wilson administration, supporting the Left could get you lynched. Opposing the US' entry into WW I was fatal if you did it too openly. Wilson even jailed the guy who ran against him for the Presidency when he did that.

The fact that the NRA and the GOP are in the same bed is no accident. You could see the NRA as the armed wing of the Republican Party. The lynch mob that thinks that Red Dawn was non-fiction. Never mind that the USSR is long dead and that Cuba's version of Communism won't survive the death of Castro. or that Castro himself has one foot in the grave and probably won't make it another 5 years if he's lucky.

The NRA needs the spectre of Communism to drive its main ideological tool-fear. The NRA wants you to be very afraid. It wants you to believe that the government is coming for you. That you'll be forced into a Stalinist gulag if you don't buy lots and lots of guns. The NRA wants you to really think you could go toe-to-toe with the US government, shouting "Wolverines!", and that you might just have to very soon.
