I advocate laws on marriage allowing for a variety of moral and religious frameworks to take advantage of the contract in question. I do not expect these laws to reflect either my moral approval or disapproval; communities (including, but not limited to, communities of faith), friends, and families will determine for themselves which "marriages" as recognized by the state are spiritually valid, moral, likely to be recognized by a deity, what-have-you. The only thing with which the state need concern itself is whether consenting adults wish to form households.

If you cannot illustrate or demonstrate a material effect on your right to engage in or recognize marriage according to whatever views you hold, then no religious or moral views are being forced on you.

I don't have a sister; I consider those who wish to bang their sisters gross and immoral. But I don't consider it my place to constrain them from doing so via the instrument of the state. Moral interests and civic interests CAN dovetail. But legal interests have a hurtle to face that moral interests do not--specifically, prevention of an empirically demonstrable civic harm (if it's a question of proscribing an activity), or service of an empirically demonstrable civic utility (when subsidizing an activity or allowing the state to recognize or bestow certain contractual rights).
