I can't really disagree that the speech wasn't some soaring arc, but to say it wasn't what the crowd wanted seems really arrogant. Can you truly speak for 1.8 million people? You certainly don't speak for me, as among the people around me we all found moments of peace, touchstones of satisfaction and an understanding of the need to speak in measured tones about a future which may not be all bunnies and happy, shiny faces in the short term.

If you know the history of the speeches that have come before, you'd know that the quotes we often repeat were often overlooked at the time, buried deep in the text.

1.) I'm just a Beacon Hill Housewife, but I thought the speech was great. I especially loved the many ways her skewered Bush.

2.) Eli, you probably would have gotten some great jokes if you had taken the train. Nothing is ever funny on an inter-city bus.

I don't get what seems to be the fairly widespread tepid reaction to the Speech. Maybe it wasn't the red meat that the crowd on the Mall wanted, but I think it was the best speech in a couple of generations (no purpose served in comparisons to Lincoln's second) and that it will be remembered as one of the best ever.

It did have simple words, beautifully strung in a lovely cadence that suggested the pulpit. It was short. Since he made every word tell, with little resort to the usual empty cataloguing of issues, programs or constituents to please subsets of the audience, it seemed even shorter than it was. He connected today's challenges with yesterday's and, in summoning forth "our better history," laid an inspirational basis for his exhortations to sacrifice and hard work. He made use of great speeches of the past, but obliquely instead of through cheap quotation or mimicry. The Speech was a tough rebuke to Bush (and his recent predecessors in some ways, it seems to me) on many fronts, but decorously so, appropriate to the occasion. I have heard the Speech described as "somber," which I think is wrong. Serious, yes, refreshingly so, but also passionate and uplifting.

I watched it again last night, and it wore well. I plan to watch it again soon. It was a great Speech!

This speech is DEEP. That line alone excoriates much of our foreign policy for decades.

My quick favorite line:
"we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united"

Bitter swill characterizes the last eight years. More to come.

What mean fucking commenters. I agree with Eli completely. I didn't dislike the speech but felt that it was a little anti-climactic. After reviewing it in writing, I see its usefulness, message, and strategy. Moderation, responsibility, and prudence don't sell well but were the exact right themes for Obama at this juncture. I too thought the international diplomacy part was the best and certainly turning a page in history.
