Blake Schwarzenbach's War on Sentimentality

            by Eric Grandy

We all have things we'd like to forget, right? The girl who broke your heart, the embarrassing song you wrote about it—any number of mistakes, humiliations, and regrets. But when we talk about the things we'd like to forget, aren't we really just holding on that much tighter, picking at the scab so it's sure to leave a scar? Think of Jim Carrey running through the dissolving rooms of his memory in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, desperate to keep them together. Maybe more than our proudest moments, it's the not-so-secretly-cherished hurts that make us who we are.

The rooms of Blake Schwarzenbach's memory may be a little more storied than yours: In the early to mid-1990s, he fronted much-beloved punk band Jawbreaker, recording a series of albums that injected the genre's proletarian urgency with heroic levels of lyrical and emotional depth. ("Emo" is a word that, regrettably, comes up a lot in reference to these guys.) Schwarzenbach's songs chronicled the kind of heartache and pain we're supposed to want to let go—disastrous house parties and lost loves, packs of cigarettes and nights spent outside Mission District liquor stores, all painted with a kind of enlarging romanticism. Jawbreaker lived the era's "alternative" dream: They toured with Nirvana, signed to a major label for a rumored million dollars, and got slagged for "selling out" in the pages of Maximum Rock'n'Roll. The band broke up in 1996, but as so often happens, they only loom larger, and more dear, in the rearview.

Schwarzenbach's bands since then—Jets to Brazil, the Thorns of Life, and now Forgetters—have all come freighted with Jawbreaker's legacy, and none has quite managed to shake it off. (Jets to Brazil came closest, releasing at least one classic album with 1998's Orange Rhyming Dictionary. The Thorns of Life were most notable for including eponymous zinester Aaron Cometbus and Daniela Sea, an actress from The L Word—they released no records and never toured farther up the West Coast than Berkeley.)

Talking about Forgetters, his new band with original Against Me! drummer Kevin Mahon and bassist Caroline Paquita of Bitchin', Schwarzenbach seems uneager to dredge up the past. He dispels the persistent hope for a Jawbreaker reunion. He offers "no comment" about the Thorns of Life's too-brief existence. He says he keeps "a pretty fierce vigil" against sentimentality. But he says the new band's name isn't just a general mission statement or an entreaty to his fans to let go of the past; it comes from a far more pointed and political concern.

"Forgetters is a response to the onerous mandate from sentimentalists and right-wing nationalists that we 'Never Forget,'" Schwarzenbach writes via e-mail from New York City, where he lives. "I grew tired of this order, having lived through September 11 in New York, and having friends who were affected by this event. To see it become a shitty T-shirt about revenge and US power just seemed to me to be smearing hatred on the graves of those who died."

This is a surprising, if eminently reasonable, political streak coming from an artist as typically personal and introspective as Schwarzenbach—maybe it's the Against Me! connection—but it's one that keeps coming up in question after question. Asked if there was one thing from his life he'd like to forget, Schwarzenbach talks about Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and the Gabrielle Giffords shooting. Regarding the old taboo of "selling out," he says, "In light of the wars and the outrageous transgressions of our elected officials, maybe a band signing to a major is a little less treasonous"—but he also respects wariness of "multinational corporations (who may have affiliations with military contractors or religious-right organizations)." He adds, of Forgetters' small-scale approach, "We do it all ourselves and with friends because we want to operate in some kind of community and not have alienated labor as a part of this project."

Asked if this political-mindedness is a new development or if it's always been an undercurrent in his art, the responses stop coming.

The four songs of Forgetters' self-released debut EP contain next to none of this explicitly ideological bent. "Vampire Lessons" is a gothic ode to the pleasures and pains of the booty call, its half-goofy/half-grim lyrics surprisingly well delivered in Schwarzenbach's appealing rasp over martial drumming and power chords. The title "Too Small to Fail" flips a familiar political sound bite, but it's not commenting on bank bailouts (thank fuck, because zzzzzzzzz), it's taking cheeky stock of the band's stature (it's also the name for their DIY label). The song itself, which erupts from gently bobbing, bass-led verses into a crashing verse, lands on a simple, emotional lyric: "Someone's gonna love me someday."

Concert footage shows a deadpan Schwarzenbach introducing the tense, jerky song "Not Funny" as being "the story of an Afghan village girl torn between her love for a soldier and her father." You could find that in its lyrics if you knew to look, although its mentions of war and soldiers can just as easily be taken as metaphorical.

Perhaps the most promising of this slow-growing EP's songs is "The Night Accelerates." Mahon's ramshackle yet chugging drumming on the verses, as well as the hoarse background screaming, recall early Against Me!, while the sustained guitar chords on the chorus could be latter-era Jawbreaker, only with less gloss. The lyrics could be about the inner life of the artist, a favorite subject going back to Jawbreaker's "Indictment" ("I just wrote the dumbest song...") or Jets to Brazil's "I Typed for Miles" ("I need a word to change my life"). "In here, I try to change my life," Schwarzenbach sings on this new song. "I hit the same wall every time."

A weird thing happens as I read through Schwarzenbach's responses: I realize I don't really have any questions about Jawbreaker or any desire to talk about the past, either. The memories I've made with their music are way more meaningful than any illuminating anecdote or lyrical insight that Schwarzenbach could provide, even if he were willing to do so.

"We are all forgetters," Schwarzenbach writes in one e-mail. "We curate our minds and choose what we will remember and what we will exclude." And then, in another: "No one forgets anything, try though they might." Either way, the more I listen to Forgetters, the more I want to hear what happens next. <img src=

Recent years have seen a wave of young musicians making soft, sample-heavy electronic music that takes pains to sound lo-fi and lower in ambition—chill, even. With the same tools used to make the state-of-the-art-sounding stuff, these acts create gauze and haze, reheat '80s dollar-bin fluff and ephemera, and take their amniotic beats all the way back to the womb. Oberlin duo Teengirl Fantasy are among the better of this bunch, a blasé of glory that makes listlessness sound danceably kinetic and sweet. U.S.F. are the ideal local openers; Pictureplane are the ideal time to sneak out to the Mecca for a drink. (Vera Project, Seattle Center, 956-8372, 7:30 pm, $9, all ages)

Off the top of my head, five god-fearing folk whose music I love regardless of any theological differences (see also, like, all of hip hop and r&b...and then there's reggae—anyway):

1. Stuart "Go off and see a minister" Murdoch, Belle & Sebastian:

Perhaps you are familiar with this sliver of awful from Youtube LOLtwee duo Pomplamoose:

Apparently it's in heavy rotation during the "footy" games on the TV lately, even after xmas, and every critic who has ever said a kind word about ukulele covers of popular songs on Youtube is partly to blame (sorry, Paul).

Anyway...a poster on ILM has this morning has dredged up a link to what appears to be Pomplamoose singer Nataly Dawn Knudsen's awesome evangelical family ministry ("PLANT A CHURCH - HARVEST A NATION"). Just so you know where your corny, post-Juno "indie" shill/Youtube partner money is going. (NOTE: You should still despise this shit primarily on its musical/aesthetic merits or lackthereof, even though capitalism and evangelical christianity are both totally lame.)

I Think Tit Pig Would Appreciate the Irony

Zak de Gorgue

So, let me explain how the hype cycle for a band breaks down here at the Stranger. Here's how it works:

First, you name your band Tit Pig—easy to remember, but messy to Google. Then, you get a little write-up on the Line Out about the name, the male-on-male-fisting t-shirts, and the difficulty of finding the band anywhere online.

Then, you get a couple of redundant/self-canceling little write-ups about how impossible it is to Google the band or find them online and how no one in the local media is covering them (urm).

Then, you get a lengthy live review which includes an apology for the prior redundant and increasingly untrue gripes vis a vis media/web presence.

Now you're famous. Like THE LASHES FAMOUS. Your band is on the internet, media coverage is frenzied, the drummer is so overrun with bears that he can barely reach his hi-hats. Right?!

Well, yes, except that we forgot to list their show tomorrow night at the Comet in the Stranger or on our website (the latter will be updated today). And just like that, you're impossible to Google again. Sorry, boys.

So, anyway, tomorrow at the Comet (now also with Same Sex Dictator!):

Headbanging. That's because I'm one million years old and I threw my neck out trying to do half a sit-up yesterday morning. I spent the rest of the day with a pinching kink in my neck and the uncomfortable sensation that something could be hovering directly in front of me and just over my head and I would never be able to see it. It's a little better today, but if there's something really cool happening on the ceiling tonight, I'm probably going to miss it. Anyway, this reminded me of my youth, when I was less than one million years old, and when I would occasionally throw my neck out from headbanging. Which all caused me to think that if I looked up "headbanging" on Youtube I would probably find something funny enough to post on this slow New Year's Eve day. And that's the story of how we got here:

Happy new year, everyone!

I wrote this review of it at the time:

This has all the pedigree of a terrible vanity project—starring and written, directed, produced, and scored by musician Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (guitarist of At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta)—but it’s in fact an impressive debut film from an apparent artistic polymath. Barlam (Rodriguez-Lopez) is an indeterminately young man enduring a delayed coming of age in the druggy, David Lynchian underworld of El Paso, Texas. Barlam might be murdering prostitutes (shades of the mass murders of Ciudad Juarez, which At the Drive-In drew attention to with the video for their 2001 single “Invalid Litter Dept.”). He might be sleeping with his sister. But events unfold out of sequence, the imaginary bleeds into the real, and the effect is entirely disorienting. Adding to the unreality is the ghost of Barlam’s dead mother, some hazy Hispanic-American mysticism, and characters who exist only in the half-life/light of computer screens, as well as Rodriguez-Lopez’s expert use of hallucinatory auditory effects.

I thought this film deserved more attention than it seemed to get, and this too-awful-even-for-yuks MXPX-spawned movie trailer seemed like as good an excuse as any to revisit it. So there you go!

While we're at it, let's have a dance, shall we:

A Two-Part Public Service Announcement About the Stumbling Monk

1. As of last night anyway, the Stumbling Monk was all out of not only both their Christmas ales on tap (the St. Bernardus, which is excellent, and another one I can't recall today and which I've been thus far prevented from sampling due to last night's outage) but also out of Hoegarden, which is like the Belgian beer bar equivalent of running out of Rainer or something.

2. With the exception of Hoegarden, it's important to remember that three of any combination of beers from the Stumbling Monk's taps is going to be equivalent to about 8 "regular" beers. It's good to keep this in mind when making your hangover calculations (or when working out how many of Tacos Gringos' tacos it will take to absorb the alcohol [two little tacos per Belgian beer, IMO].)

This has been a public service announcement.

Is giving Trent Moorman's Sound Check column a place in the print edition ("you have a print edition?!") of the Stranger. Shit is week after week gold—for instance:

In 2010, I regret not rolling down Pine Street while wrapped in a sheet of bacon, with a boom box in my hand, cranking the Prince song "Controversy." That is the jam. The Juno, Prophet, ARP synthesizer lines rise and cut with pure, enlarged funk that gets down to the marrowed core of what it is to be sexual music. This was 1981 Prince, pre—Purple Rain. It's raw but bolder. He's got the strut, but it's less refined. His split had more spring off the floor, and his facial hair was less accurate. This was when he was into wearing thongs. Amadeus in a thong.

The sounds of this beautifully dirty monument of a song would pad me as I rolled down Pine, wrapped in bacon. I'd hit Bauhaus and maybe enjoy some sort of coffee beverage with vanilla powder on top. No one would say anything about the bacon because they would be engrossed in the holiness of the Prince song.

The roll would continue down Pine all the way to First and into Sodo. I would have rolled like a runaway log, hitting speeds of up to 12 miles an hour until I came to rest at the Starbucks corporate office, where I would rob $7.5 million from the safe in Howard Schultz's corner suite. Then I would have purchased a bungalow on the beach in Jamaica and built a go-cart track there. Golden suns would rise and set over the ocean from my view on the porch. Mahimahi would be cooked on a grill with garlic and lemon, and intoxicated friends would race go-carts.

I would own a mastiff named Eazy-E...

Naturally, there's more.

One of the More Depressing Year-End Pieces I've Read Lately, or: Did You Want to Read an Essay About Kanye West?

Some serious, Kanye-themed self assessment from Nick Sylvester:

7. Sidenote: I am still waiting for some kind underpaid soul to make the distinction between Kanye West the excellent hip-hop producer, and Kanye West the just average writer of vocal melodies. I would attempt to write this piece myself if I knew I could be paid at a rate higher than whatever some 14-year-old makes working his first job at White Castle. This is not the reality of any music writer’s situation though. A piece like this would mostly serve Kanye West, and people who want to make music like Kanye West, and to a much smaller extent, people who are interested in the tics of West’s music. Not anyone else, at least immediately. It would start from the premise that Kanye West can, in fact, get much higher. It would start from the premise of wanting good music to be better music. Music in this piece would not serve as mere fodder for Ideas Inspired By Music. It would be technical as fuck. There would be no “takeaway.”

8. Instead you get something called “cultural criticism.” And cultural criticism on the internet is mostly a parlor game. It can’t afford to be anything else. It is entertainment for smart people with day jobs. A lot of that entertainment? Pretty entertaining. The ideas it produces are often meaningful on their own. There are Good Guys doing good things. Most of it is noise though — digital artifacts from the conversion of sound to text.

9. But right now I feel like I’m not one of the Good Guys. I’m dangerously close to becoming another noisemaker. Another person on the internet who writes about music he hasn’t fully processed — not even “about” music but “in the vicinity of” music. I am in grave danger of being slightly more full of shit than everyone else. My best idea about music this year is to stop having ideas about music. As for Kanye, I am glad I didn’t pull that trigger.

Did you want to read the rest of this essay?

[ Comment on this story ]

Another Fucking Regrettable Year in the Streets

            by Eric Grandy

Regretfully, I'm writing these all in a rush at the last possible minute, so if I miss something as I'm scanning back through the 2010 archives, well, add it to the list. Here goes.

I regret not wearing a suit to the Stranger Genius Awards. At the time, I told myself that my best black T-shirt plus jeans would be formal enough, that this was the earned nonuniform uniform of the Rock Critic, anyway. But as it turned out, I was the only person dressed so casually and publisher Tim Keck gave me a rather withering look about it. Oops. I even had a suit, too. But I'd had the pants taken in poorly, and it hung heavy with sentimental memory, and one time a friend had lightly teased that it looked like an "Ahmadinejadsuit," meaning, I guess, antiquatedly modern, or out of touch, or overly serious, or possibly just "gray." In any case, I probably should have just had the pants altered again and worn the thing, maybe with a colorfully unserious tie.

I regret not being harder on the new Mad Rad album, or not digging into it at greater length. Every outlet in town ran something on these guys around the record's release—understandable, given the headlines they've generated in the past years—but most of these articles were neutral profiles or puff pieces that tactfully avoided actually weighing in on the album itself. Profiles are fine, puff pieces are fun, but I think Seattle, and, hell, even Mad Rad themselves, deserves some honest-to-god music criticism amid all the hometown boosterism and back-patting. Tough love makes us all tougher.

I regret so few people went to see Cold Cave when they came through town. Their set was short and loud and sweet, and you should have been there.

I regret Owl City and CocoRosie, although for almost polar opposite aesthetic and intellectual crimes against humanity.

I regret the way Fremont gets on weekend nights.

I regret everything Weezer have done since those bootlegs that surfaced pre–Green Album. I also regret that I had to choose Pavement over their Bumbershoot set this year, because apparently Weezer somehow erased a lot of similar ill will that night. I'm still suspicious, "Blinkerton" tour or no. (Also: The dog on the cover of Raditude was apparently not Photoshopped, as I wrote in "What the Hell Happened to Weezer?" in the 2010 Bumbershoot guide. I regret the error. But I regret Raditude more.)

I also regret how spotty Belle & Sebastian's albums have been in the past 10 years—although the occasional shining single, EP, or spectacular live show at Benaroya Hall helps make up for it.

I regret that Das Racist's biggest Seattle show yet was such a sloppy dud. Better luck next time, dudes.

I regret that, every year, the craziness of the busy summer festival and touring season so diverts my attention from Seattle's always bubbling musical underground, and that it always takes until the fall/
winter slowdown for me to pause and look around and remember how much great stuff is happening around us all the time. I will try to remember this every day in the coming year.

A moment ago, a steady thumping could be heard coming from my colleague Charles Mudede's cubicle. Not music, but a flat, fleshy thwap repeating at an urgent tempo. Nervously, I poked my head over the cubicle's edge. There was Charles, bobbing his head and stomping both feet on the ground to an invisible beat in his headphones. "You caught me jamming," he said. "That's embarrassing."

The source of his jamming and his embarrassment? "Welsh dub." Of course:

Year endzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Today, two records that have hit me in my sweet spot here too late in the year, both exemplars of krauty and/or cosmic disco grooviness—Prins Thomas' self-titled solo full-length (sans Lindstrom, Prins' album sounds like a slightly meatier continuation of the duo's sprawled-out II) and Bjørn Torske's Kokning.
In the latest instance of god and nature (shouts, genus columbidae) conspiring against the Kings of Leon, two of the band's buses caught on fire this morning, forcing them to postpone a sold-out show at London's O2 arena. BBC reports:

A concert by Kings of Leon has been postponed after a fire on one of their tour buses at The O2 arena in London.

The blaze began on the coach before spreading to another tour bus in the loading bay of the venue in Greenwich.

About 60 firefighters were at the scene on Tuesday morning and ambulance crews treated six people for smoke inhalation.

An O2 spokesman said the fire meant there was not enough time to rig the arena for the sell-out concert.

We can laugh about it, but ultimately we still live in a world where god and pigeon allows this band to sell out the O2. Makes your inner arsonist itchy, doesn't it?

I know this review of Mad Rad's new album is old news (I've been out of the office for a bit, so excuse me playing catch-up), but I'm confused. Trolls is confused. The whole thing is very confusing: When did I ever say I LOVED Mad Rad? Sure, the Stranger has covered them thoroughly (love them or hate them, the guys know how to stay newsworthy), and Charles Mudede has heralded them as a next big thing, but some commenters here are reacting like I pulled some big about face, like I went from being Mad Rad's #1 fan to stabbing them in the back. Typical hipster bandwaggon jumping followed by typical hipster backlash, right? Only, when did I ever say anything so superlative about these guys? Maybe my Google game is off (it happens), but I can't really find anything to support such a reading. Help me out, Mad Rad lovers, Grandy haters. I'm fully prepared to eat my words on this one, but citations or it didn't happen, please.

(Also, I resolve to be more loose and groovy and less "uptight" in the new year. Watch for it!)

Won't link to all the individual outlets' lists here—they're easy enough to find—but M.I.A.'s latest is barely a blip on most of them. I agree with this assessment—I thought MAYA was a huge, messy, hard-to-hear disappointment—but I'm surprised that the rest of the critical world seems to agree. I guess at the time of its release so many reviews/profiles/puff pieces were still so wrapped up with truffle-gate that maybe you didn't really notice whether or not anyone actually liked the thing. But now, in year-end time, it's just like the album never even happened at all. Which actually might be for the best. MAYA was a monster, but it's not one MIA can't/won't bounce back from, especially given the benefit of some collective amnesia.

(Also: Hi, Line Out, did you miss me? I missed you.)

Tit Pig: Slam Dancing and Shit Talk

            by Eric Grandy

Last Thursday at the Comet, much-buzzed-about band Tit Pig (if you're sick of hearing about them, don't worry, they're taking a few months off to record) unleashed a half hour or so of screaming hardcore so fun and vital that it actually has me giving half a shit about the aggro genre for the first time in years.

Sean "The Prawn" Evoy is an ideal frontman for a hardcore band. Before Tit Pig, the last time he was in The Stranger, he was boasting about how he carries a knife when he goes to Goodwill (don't let the tough talk fool you, he's just a big ol' clotheshorse). Evoy doesn't "have a mouth on him," he's just all mouth. It's probably for the best that his, uh, singing comes out as an unintelligible series of throat-scraping screams, squeals, and croaks, because he's almost certainly talking some nasty, offensive shit in there. Perhaps his between-song banter is some indication (although the first thing out of Evoy's mouth was the Mr. Show phrase "Fuck yeah, that wide," which might also give some hint about the band's sense of humor): "All right, motherfuckers, it's time to knuckle up. Let's get fucking nuts, motherfuckers." "I can't hear myself at all, just—whatever, fuck it, fucking shit." "It's not dirty enough for me. I need you guys to do something. Someone take a shit on the floor." "Break your fucking legs, let's get gross." "Spill some fucking blood. Somebody get their head split open, I'm getting bored."

To their credit, the crowd responded to Evoy's hectoring with enthusiastic slam dancing and omnidirectional volleys of beer cans. Evoy, quickly shirtless and showing off his garish chest tattoo, responded in kind, stalking through the crowd and shoving audience members. The dude from the nearby hot-dog stand upturned a small trash can onstage. There was a cardboard box in the pit, tripping people up; eventually, it wound up around the drummer's shoulders, like the human/garbage version of one of those dog cones. The songs were short, fast, and hard, the rhythm martial and unrelenting, the guitarist (dreadlocked Willy Nilz from Wildildlife) alternating from distorted chords to fast, one-handed fret-tapping that left his right hand free for throwing metal horns or, better yet, pointing at his own finger-tapping left hand.

The drummer also got in some good banter. Introducing a song called "Cruising," named, one assumes, for the graphic gaysploitation Al Pacino film, he said, "I want to say I'm so happy to see some big bears here tonight, and if any of you guys wanna take me home and abuse me tonight, I'm up for grabs. The next one's called 'Cruising,' and it goes out to all the bears and it's straight from my heart and I'm dead serious." To which Evoy replied, "We got a limp wrist in here tonight."

Tit Pig are eager provocateurs (see also their butthole-fisting T-shirt), but Evoy's between-song gripes about boredom and his repeated calls for more extreme action raise a niggling question: How filthy does the slam dancing and the shit talk have to be for this stuff to shock us anymore? If anyone in Seattle's gonna find out, it'll be Tit Pig.

Sub Pop's Andy Kotowicz passed away after an automobile accident in October, leaving behind a wife and daughter (who was heroically rescued from the wreckage by the owner of Rizzo's French Dip sandwich shop). He also left behind a diverse and impressive roster of bands he worked with at Sub Pop, from Midwest noise monsters Wolf Eyes to local hiphop light Shabazz Palaces. Tonight those bands remember Kotowicz with a concert to benefit his family. Even if this concert weren't for a heartbreakingly good cause, it would still be an amazing lineup, also including Mudhoney, Vetiver, Pissed Jeans, A Frames/AFCGT, Fruit Bats, and Michael Yonkers. (Showbox at the Market, 1426 First Ave, 628-3151, 6 pm, $20, all ages)

Last night, much-buzzed about local band Tit Pig played a well-attended show at the Comet Tavern, headlining over Olympia bands Milk Music and Christian Mistress (White Boss unfortunately cancelled). I missed Milk Music, but a friend described them as “like a down-tuned Foo Fighters,” which actually really makes me want to see them sometime. Olympia’s Christian Mistress are a full-on, hair-farming, head-banging metal band in the most classic mold. I will be honest, I don’t have the faintest fucking idea what to do with this stuff. Same friend said they sounded like “Motörhead and Iron Maiden” had a baby, and I’m inclined to defer to him on this one. Fun fact: my iPhone autocorrect knows to put an umlaut in Motörhead. Rock on, Jobs.

As editor of this music section, I take full responsibility for the irony that Tit Pig’s last nine or so mentions in the Stranger this past month have all concerned how little media coverage they get and how impossible they are to track down on the internet. My bad. But it’s better you hear about them than not, even if it involves some beating over the head with a dead horse. In any case, readers should be in for a brief reprieve, as Tit Pig ended their set last night with the announcement that they wouldn’t be playing shows for a couple months so that they can concentrate on making a record. Before that, they let loose a half hour or so of screaming hardcore so fun and vital that it actually has me giving half a shit about the mostly moribund aggro genre for the first time in years.

Sean “the Prawn” Evoy is an ideal frontman for a hardcore band. Before Tit Pig, the last time he was in the Stranger, he was boasting about how he carries a knife when he goes to the Goodwill (don’t let the tough talk fool you, he’s just a big ol’ clotheshorse). Evoy doesn’t “have a mouth on him,” he’s just all mouth. It’s probably for the best that his, uh, singing comes out as an unintelligible series of throat-scraping screams, squeals, and croaks, because he’s almost certainly talking some nasty, offensive shit in there. Perhaps his deadpan between song banter is some indication (although the first thing out of Evoy’s mouth was the Mr. Show phrase “fuck yeah that wide,” which might also give some hint about the band’s sense of humor): “All right, motherfuckers, it’s time to knuckle up. Let’s get fucking nuts, motherfuckers.” “I can’t hear myself at all, just—whatever, fuck it, fucking shit.” “It’s not dirty enough for me. I need you guys to do something. Someone take a shit on the floor.” “Break your fucking legs, let’s get gross.” “Spill some fucking blood. Somebody get their head split open, I’m getting bored.”

To their credit, the crowd responded to Evoy’s hectoring with enthusiastic slam dancing and omni-directional volleys of beer cans. Evoy, quickly shirtless and showing off his garish chest tattoo, responded in kind, stalking through the crowd and shoving audience members. The dude from the hot dog stand upturned a small trash can onstage. There was a cardboard box in the pit, tripping people up; eventually, it wound up around the drummer’s shoulders, like the human/garbage version of one of those dog cones. The songs were short, fast, and hard, the rhythm martial and unrelenting, the guitarist (dreadlocked Willie Nilz from Wildildlife) alternating from distorted chords to fast, one-handed fret-tapping that left his other right hand free for throwing metal horns or, better yet, pointing at his own finger-tapping left hand.

The drummer also got in some good banter. Introducing a song called “Cruising,” named, one assumes, for the graphic gaysplotation Al Pacino film, he said, "I want to say I'm so happy to see some big bears here tonight, and if any of you guys wanna take me home and abuse me tonight, I'm up for grabs. The next one’s called ‘Cruising’ and it goes out to all the bears and it's straight from my heart and I'm dead serious." To which Evoy replied, "we got a limpwrist in here tonight.”

Tit Pig are eager provocateurs (see also their t-shirt), but Evoy’s between song gripes about boredom, his repeated calls for more extreme action, raise a niggling question: how filthy does the slam dancing and the shit talk have to be for this stuff to shock anymore? If anyone in Seattle’s gonna find out, it’ll be Tit Pig.

Kanye West had interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMAs. Mad Rad had a fight with a bouncer at Neumos. Like Kanye—and don't worry, we won't take this comparison so far that it becomes grossly unfair—Mad Rad spent much of 2010 recalibrating their brand and rebuilding their hype game even as they went to work in the studio, and they too cap the year with an album that aims, however obliquely, for redemption. Let's have a toast to the douchebags.

Kanye came back from his gaffe with the recently released My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, an absolute mountain of an album—hiphop, pop, or otherwise—that finds new depths by doubling down on the auteur's favorite subject: himself. Mad Rad's new sophomore album, The Youth Die Young, feels like a more intentional and drastic reboot—from much-hyped party rappers (remember "third wave"?) to banned "bad boys" to, well, what exactly? The partying and the recklessness are still here—from the would-be cred-establishing (and Clipse-refuting?) boast in "Caveman" ("I don't need keys to let us in/See what I did to your bouncer's chin") to the equally aggro and entry-obsessed sex rap of "I Want Your Blood." But there are also heavy-handed attempts at sober reflection, angst, and "Epiphany." If White Gold was the party, Youth is the morning after. Mad Rad haven't become the good guys, but they've started to take stock of themselves as bad guys. But the results of this soul searching are disappointingly shallow on several levels.
