While people are quick to dismiss nuclear energy as bad, Pandora’s Promise looks at how some leading environmentalists have converted to support its use. Many activists have become disillusioned with the traditional environmental approaches to climate change. They claim that the concerns are so dire, that non-carbon-producing nuclear is the best current solution to mitigate the effects of our years of fossil-fuel guzzling.

The film makes a surprisingly persuasive argument. Experts on the scientific side explain the ways that nuclear energy technology has advanced (new reactors recycle waste back into fuel) and examine what they say is misinformation (inflated radiation fears, that conservation and alternative energies could be enough). The reality is we will need more and more power, and we cannot continue to extract every last bit of oil, coal, and natural gas, then burn it and send it into the atmosphere. The film lays out the benefits of nuclear energy: It is clean, it doesn’t pollute the air, it doesn’t damage the ozone, and it produces large amounts of energy, which is inexpensive for consumers. One environmentalist says: “To be anti-nuclear is basically to be in favor of burning fossil fuels. I finally had to change my mind.”

Pandora's Promise opens today at the Harvard Exit.

When I saw Decoding Annie Parker at SIFF, one of the subjects of the film, geneticist Mary-Claire King, was in attendance. Dr. King discovered the BRCA genes and proved that there can be a genetic cause for breast cancer, an idea that had previously been pooh-poohed. At the screening, Dr. King spoke hopefully about the upcoming US Supreme Court case on the patenting of genes. The case was decided this morning, with the court saying that genes may not be patented. If a woman carries the BRCA gene, she has an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but genetic screening to discover if you have the gene is expensive. Now that the patent on the BRCA genes has been lifted, more scientists will be able to work on the genes and more laboratories can provide genetic testing—leading to more access for women and lowering the costs.

From the New York Times:

Isolated human genes may not be patented, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Thursday. The case concerned patents held by Myriad Genetics, a Utah company, on genes that correlate with increased risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. The patents were challenged by scientists and doctors who said their research and ability to help patients had been frustrated. The particular genes at issue received public attention after the actress Angelina Jolie revealed in May that she had had a preventive double mastectomy after learning that she had inherited a faulty copy of a gene that put her at high risk for breast cancer.

The price of the test, often more than $3,000, was partly a product of Myriad’s patent, putting it out of reach for some women. The company filed patent infringement suits against others who conducted testing based on the gene. The price of the test "should come down significantly," said Dr. Harry Ostrer, one of the plaintiffs in the case decided Thursday. The ruling, he said, “will have an immediate impact on people’s health.”

Fun Fact: In 1975, Dr. Mary-Claire King informed the world that humans and chimpanzees share 99 percent of their genetic material!

Decoding Annie Parker (which is a drama starring Helen Hunt and Samantha Morton about the discovery of the BRCA genes) is showing again as part of Best of SIFF 2013 on Sunday, June 16, at 2:30 p.m. at SIFF Cinema Uptown.

Pandora’s Promise: A Documentary That May Change Your Opinion of Nuclear Power

            by Gillian Anderson

While people are quick to dismiss nuclear energy as bad, Pandora’s Promise shows how some leading environmentalists have converted to support its use.

They make an interesting case. Obviously, what we are doing now isn’t working. Coal is the most widely used source of energy in the world, and it is also the fastest growing source of energy. If you think about the air pollution produced by coal-fired power stations, not to mention the mining and transportation of coal, nuclear starts to look a bit better. Essentially, they argue that the devastating effects of fossil-fuel consumption are worse than the dangers posed by the production of nuclear energy.

Previously, to be an environmentalist was to be against nuclear energy. It is interesting to see these people changing their views on it (including Stewart Brand, publisher of the Whole-Earth Catalog). However, the film is almost entirely one-sided, extolling the benefits of nuclear power while portraying anti-nuclear activists as strident conspiracy theorists unwilling to see the truth. And it doesn’t address the huge costs of building nuclear power stations (the film was partially funded by Vulcan, which is developing advanced nuclear technologies). However, what’s clear is that the old environmental strategies aren’t sufficient, and somehow we need to create a new clean-energy infrastructure to replace the current fossil-fuel infrastructure before we all choke to death. <img src="/images/rec_star.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="recommended" border=

Based on a true story, Decoding Annie Parker follows Annie Parker (played by Samantha Morton), a cancer survivor seeking to understand why the women in her family keep getting breast cancer, and Dr. Mary-Claire King (played by Helen Hunt), a geneticist whose years of work led to the discovery of the BRCA genes that are now known to indicate an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The cast also includes Aaron Paul, Rashida Jones, Richard Schiff, and Maggie Grace. Looks to be very interesting!

Here is a recent article about the movie from the Seattle Times.

Decoding Annie Parker plays Thurs June 6 at 7 pm at the Egyptian and Sat June 8 at 1:30 pm at the Egyptian. The screenings will benefit the King Lab at the University of Washington, which studies breast and ovarian cancer, and tickets are $25. Annie Parker, Dr. Mary-Claire King, and director Steven Bernstein will be in attendance.

The TBA films are being filled in, and a new addition to the SIFF lineup is Lil Bub & Friendz, about a very special cat with unique characteristics. Lil Bub is tiny, and she has extra toes (22 toes total!), stubby legs, and no teeth, but lots of charm. She has a giant fan base and her own YouTube channel. All hail Lil Bub!

Lil Bub & Friendz plays Sat June 8 at 9 pm at SIFF Cinema Uptown.

Part of a group of bohemian poets, philosophers, and dancers who made radical art, James Broughton was a poet, a pioneer of queer filmmaking, a teacher, and a free-spirited man who had a dynamic and amazing life, and who knew some of the most interesting people in the San Francisco art scene from the 1950s onward. His avant-garde films included dance, nudity, poetry, love, and all modes of sexuality. Big Joy includes excerpts from his poetry and films, documentation of him throughout his life, and interviews with people who knew him. His personal life was adventurous and complicated, and he made the most of everything the world had to offer. A friend said of Broughton: “He was forever liberating people.”

This riveting documentary revisits the 1991 testimony of Anita Hill at the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. It is still disturbing to see her sitting alone at that table in front of the all-white, all-male Senate Judiciary Committee—and Orrin Hatch's ugly badger face—while they make her go over the details again and again. The amazing way that she was treated like she was on trial, when in fact she was a witness in front of the committee, is infuriating: the race-baiting, the accusations of lying, the patronizing attitudes. The film also sees current-day Anita Hill looking back at that time and shows her continuing work for equality and social justice. Her testimony started the national dialogue on sexual harassment and also completely changed the trajectory of her life. Anita is really worth seeing.

Anita plays again Sun May 26 at the Renton Performing Arts Center at 3:30 pm and on Mon May 27 at the Egyptian Theater at 10 am. Director Freida Mock will be in attendance.

The Wall Street Journal has an article about the lack of apostrophes in US place names titled "Theres a Question Mark Hanging Over the Apostrophes Future." (Reading this makes me apoplectic.)

The U.S., in fact, is the only country with an apostrophe-eradication policy. The program took off when President Benjamin Harrison set up the Board on Geographic Names in 1890. By one board estimate, it has scrubbed 250,000 apostrophes from federal maps. The states mostly—but not always—bow to its wishes.

An apostrophe, the argument goes, implies private ownership of a public place. When names appear on maps, "they change from words having specific dictionary meaning to fixed labels used to refer to geographic entities," the names committee explains in its statement of "Principles, Policies and Procedures."

Ack! The horror!

Thanks to copy editor Jesse Vernon for the link.

Fluffy housemade biscuits! Apple-butter from a 100-year-old family recipe! Milkshakes, sundaes, and homemade pie! YES!

            by Gillian Anderson

In this delightful year-old Georgetown diner, the decor is old-school workingman Seattle, and the menu includes some of the best straight-up eggs and hash-browns breakfasts you’ll find. They serve all the regular diner fare (the tuna melt and turkey sandwich are tops), prepared with a loving touch. On a recent visit, we were eating the fluffy housemade biscuits, and the server told us that the apple-butter recipe has been in her family for 100 years. Also milkshakes, sundaes, and homemade pie! No Place on Earth: An Amazing Tale of Surviving the Holocaust in an Underground Cave

            by Gillian Anderson

The documentary begins with a New York spelunker discovering old household items (shoes, a comb, a stove) deep inside an underground cave in Western Ukraine. He wants to find out the story of the people who had lived in the cave, but the residents of the rural community are evasive. After years of searching, he finally connects with the living members of an extended Jewish family who survived in the subterranean cave for more than a year during World War II. They refused to go to the Jewish ghetto when they were ordered to, and thus avoided being sent to the concentration camp, but they had to hide where no one could find them. Ranging in age from age 2 to 76, they went as far underground as they could.

It’s an unbelievable story, told from first-person accounts of the survivors who were children and young people when they lived there, and reenactments of what life was like in the cave and what it took to avoid detection by the Germans. The mental and environmental conditions were extreme, added to the intense fear of being discovered, not being sure about who to trust outside, and not knowing when they might be able to come out.

No Place on Earth is an amazing tale of endurance and a terrible reminder of what humans can do to each other. Originally having one of the largest Jewish populations in Europe, less than 5 percent of the Jews in Western Ukraine survived the war. One survivor said of their story, “We spoke of it amongst ourselves, we didn’t tell it to others, because it was just too incredible.” <img src="/images/rec_star.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="recommended" border=

A Fierce Green Fire: An Environmental Documentary So Honest You’ll Want to Kill Yourself

            by Gillian Anderson

A documentary in five parts (with celebrity narrators Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, and more!), A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet looks at the history of the environmental movement. It begins with people becoming interested in conservation in the United States: fighting dams in national parks, saving the Grand Canyon, fighting to preserve wild spaces. It then moves through the second wave of environmental activism: creation of the EPA, regulations to clean up pollution. This part covers the disaster of Love Canal in depth: the miscarriages, birth defects, stillbirths, sick kids, and toxic chemicals leaching into homes—it is so horrifying to watch, you can hardly believe it really happened. Industry fights back, not wanting to change, not wanting to take responsibility.

The film shows the environmental and civil rights movements converging into the idea of environmental justice, acknowledging the basic human rights to have clean air and water and a safe environment. Green Fire shows the rise of Greenpeace and the bringing together of the ecology and antiwar movements. You get to watch whales being harpooned and cut up, and baby seals being axed in the head. The story moves to the international stage, showing the Amazon rainforest threatened by dams, mining, cattle ranching, with people all over the developing world fighting for their basic rights of land, livelihood, and a safe place to live.

And just when you think it can’t get worse, you have climate change, overpopulation, nuclear waste, and desertification. Politicians, big business, and energy industries are fighting change and rejecting collective solutions. The GOP won’t acknowledge that climate change exists and want to turn natural lands over to private industry.

The film has great interviews with people who are involved with all facets of the environmental movement, and it has some amazing footage. I don’t think the film is supposed to make you feel so demoralized that you want to give up on trying anything, but that’s the effect it has. While there are plenty of grassroots movements fighting to protect the environment, the film shows they have little top-down support. Governments won’t join international environmental treaties (ahem, United States), many citizens are apathetic, and leaders don’t want to impinge on “business,” even if it means destroying our planet. <img src="/images/rec_star.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="recommended" border=

From Up on Poppy Hill: Studio Ghibli, Without the Weirdness

            by Gillian Anderson

The latest offering from Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle) is a sweet story, but it’s missing some of the fantastical elements of the studio’s other movies. Umi is a teenager living at her grandmother’s boarding house for women, where she does the cooking and laundry and takes care of her younger brother and sister while her mother is studying abroad. From her house on the hill, she raises signal flags every morning as an homage to her dead sea-captain father.

Through a mysterious poem in the school newsletter about the flags, Umi meets a boy and gets involved in a fight to save a crazy old building that serves as the meeting hall for school clubs, which is set to be torn down to make way for more modern buildings. Should the old make way for the new Japan, or should the past be preserved?

From Up on Poppy Hill’s hand-drawn animation is inventive and shows the look and details of Japanese life in the 1960s: the Yokohama harbor, the fish market, the traditional wooden houses. It is beautifully illustrated and nicely paced, but also a bit schmaltzy. If you like Japanese animation movies, Poppy Hill is worthy. But those looking for another Howl’s Moving Castle and its invigorating weirdness may want to skip this one. <img src="/images/rec_star.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="recommended" border=

The warm, sunny weather these last two weekends has definitely inspired my bees. They are out and about and bringing pollen back to the hive. At first I couldn't see how they could find pollen this time of year. But then I looked around and saw there was some stuff blooming: heather, rosemary, daphne.

Hey, ladies!

See the yellow pollen on her legs? When the workers start bringing in pollen, it sends a message to the queen to begin laying again. In less than a month, we'll start seeing the new bees. Just in time for the fruit-tree blooms!

Ron Finley gives a terrific TED Talk about his work planting gardens in the food desert of South Central Los Angeles. It is really worth a watch (it's only 10 minutes). He became a gardening renegade after the city tried to make him take out the vegetable garden in his planting strip.

"To change the community, you have to change the composition of the soil. We are the soil… Gardening is the most therapeutic and defiant act you can do. Especially in the inner city. Plus you get strawberries."

According to Capitol Hill Seattle, Chuck’s Hop Shop just signed a 10-year lease to open a beer shop/neighborhood hangout at 20th and Union in the old Copymaster building.

Dikla Tuchman for CHS

Chuck Shin already runs Chuck’s 85th Street Market, which carries tons of beer on tap and in bottles, and fills growlers to go. He says, "We’re going to be open to dogs and families – that’s our thing.”

“We’ll have space for rotating food trucks every day. We’re also hoping to build a bit of an outdoor seating area,” Shin said. As for its offerings, Shin has a similar plan for the store on E Union. “We’ll have ice cream for kids and we’re planning fifty taps.” Chuck’s will also continue to provide a similar schedule of events at the new shop: Tastings, trivia nights, and, hopefully, a weekly Euchre night…

The plan continues to be an unassuming, laid-back locale that is in no way focused on décor or pretentiousness, but rather on quality beer and a quality hang-out for families and neighbors. “We’re going for homey and comfortable,” he said.

Sounds great. He hopes to open in May.

Getting your summer travel plans together? How about a few months in the Hamptons at Grey Gardens? You can rent the famous estate that formerly housed Big Edie and Little Edie. And there's so much to keep you busy: cat hoarding, crazy fighting, and flag dancing!

The listing reads:

A piece of American folklore can be yours from now until the end of July when you rent East Hamptons fabled Grey Gardens 2 acre estate with pool and tennis next to Georgica Beach. Originally designed by Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe in 1897, this 6000 Hampton original, was totally renovated and restored to its originally condition with the addition of today's amenities when the current owners rescued it some 30 years ago.

Only mother/daughter pairs will be considered.

Are you an azalea lover? Can't get enough willow trees in your life? You're in luck. The Washington Park Arboretum is digitizing its plant records to create a map that will be searchable with your smartphone, so you can pinpoint something you want to see, identify a mystery tree, or take a plant tour.

Since it opened in 1934, the Washington Park Arboretum has been home to thousands of plant collections and species, each with a meticulously kept record and history.

The University of Washington Botanic Gardens started work last August on a two-year project to digitize those records and create an interactive geographic information systems map for the entire park. Eventually planners and visitors will be able to go online and pinpoint specific plants and collections within the Arboretum, and access all sorts of historical details.

“People will be able to find an area in the arboretum, then zoom down and see which plants are there,” says Tracy Mehlin, project manager and information technology librarian at the UW’s Center for Urban Horticulture. “It will be really fascinating and educational to have all of that history linked to the plant records, and accessible online to everyone.”

Sounds cool!

The festivities kick off with lion and dragon dances accompanied by resounding drumming and long strings of firecrackers (to scare off evil). The rest of the day features activities and exhibitions of taiko drumming, breakdancing by Massive Monkees, martial arts, and more. Food is an important part of the Lunar New Year celebration, and restaurants all over the International District will offer $2 tastes from Japan, China, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Good fortune and happiness for all in the Year of the Snake!
Check out these terrific/informative videos from Burt's Bees, where founder Burt Shavitz talks to a queen bee, a drone bee, and some worker bees (all played by Isabella Rossellini). Full of interesting bee facts and cool bee costumes!

Elle magazine has an article about Burt Shavitz and the beauty industry's new interest in bee products:

Shavitz was a trailblazer, not only in his pre-artisanal-Brooklyn-era decision to ditch his media job and live off the land, but also in his instinctual understanding of the value of bees, both for his own and the greater good. Shavitz has been a sort of custodian and de facto publicist for the species. The company has worked tirelessly to call attention to Colony Collapse Disorder, creating the Honeybee Health Improvement Project to fund research grants, taking a stand against pesticide use, and giving every employee a stipend to take beekeeping classes.

Things you can do to help bees:
Plant wildflowers
Buy local honey
Support organic farms.
