Man, it's rare day that I agree with Karl Rove and Marco Rubio about anything, but they're totally right on the Justice Department's ridiculous overreaching in their pursuit of Fox News reporter James Rosen. Karl Rove says it's "chilling" and "beyond the pale" and adds that in the Bush administration, "There were leaks of classified information and in each and every instance, the focus was on the potential leak, not the reporter who received it." And Rubio says:

I am very concerned by reports the Obama Administration targeted a FOX News reporter for possible criminal prosecution for doing what appears to be normal news-gathering protected by the First Amendment. The sort of reporting by James Rosen detailed in the report is the same sort of reporting that helped Mr. Rosen aggressively pursue questions about the Administration’s handling of Benghazi. National security leaks are criminal and put American lives on the line, and federal prosecutors should, of course, vigorously investigate. But we expect that they do so within the bounds of the law, and that the investigations focus on the leakers within the government – not on media organizations that have First Amendment protections and serve vital function in our democracy. We must insist that federal agents not use legitimate investigations as an excuse to harass journalists they deem unfriendly to the President or the Administration. We shouldn’t even have to ask if our government would do such a thing, but unfortunately as the unfolding IRS scandal shows, this White House has created a culture where we do have to explicitly make these kinds of requests.

As Ryan Lizza writes on The New Yorker's website: "It is unprecedented for the government, in an official court document, to accuse a reporter of breaking the law for conducting the routine business of reporting on government secrets."

Here's the PDF of the Justice Department's application for a search warrant of Rosen's email account, with several instances of statements like this:

Can you imagine if this were a Republican administration targeting, say, an MSNBC reporter? On Twitter, Lizza described today's White House briefing as "surreal":

Today's WH briefing is surreal. Reporters can't get @presssec to garner a shred of concern about DOJ calling James Rosen a criminal.
— Ryan Lizza (@RyanLizza) May 20, 2013

Meanwhile, Lizza's Twitter bio has changed to "Washington Correspondent for The New Yorker, Contributor for CNN, aider, abettor and/or co-conspirator."

Gothic anguish, degeneracy, nakedness, wine, and a wheat field. Also, gold leaf, honey, tar, blood, wax, flowers, leeches, pheasants, and arrows. And Jessie Smith. And Jessie Smith choreography. And Jessie Smith wearing a weird cape thing with a very long tail with egg-carton-like shapes bulging from it. And music. And weird, beautiful acts of endurance. And gay shame and bullying. And the most perfect curtain call of all: None at all.

It might be sold out. Sneak in anyway.

One man was saying to a group of friends: "You'd be amazed what people share with their grocery person." On the other side of the room, a woman was saying to her friends, regarding the reading Kay Ryan had just given: "I hope that I got some of the jokes. I probably didn't." Later I heard someone say: "My main problem with ghosts is there are never dinosaur ghosts."

This was in a room on the second floor of Kane Hall, a high-ceilinged space with old-fashioned cluster lights and a huge organ at one end and a long banquet table down the center, piled with flatbreads and shrimp and tiny cakes. There was also a bar, serving complimentary wine. It had already been such a treat to see an hour-long free reading by the very wonderful Kay Ryan, who'd been introduced by the very wonderful Heather McHugh, that then to step into a room piled with free treats was, well, quite the treatment. Thanks, University of Washington Department of English!

"Thank you for that ridiculous introduction," Kay Ryan whispered to Heather McHugh as they walked into the reception. McHugh's introduction had been so dense with humor—poetry jokes and history jokes and many other kinds of jokes besides, plus some real-deal appreciation of Ryan's gifts—that Ryan's head, a few rows ahead of me, had been bobbing with laughter. And then Ryan got up and was very funny herself, so funny that afterward I felt exactly like that lady I overheard at the reception: I hope that I got some of the jokes. I love how intimidated that statement is.

"You cannot believe the eminences" the UW has invited to give the memorial Roethke reading since the 1960s, McHugh had pointed out onstage, and then looking at the list, she cracked: "They made one or two mistakes." Among the greats: Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Bishop, James Merrill. Ghost dinosaurs all, it occurred to me later.

[ Comment on this story ]

That's not counting veterans and it's not counting "National Guard and reserve troops who were not on active duty when they committed suicide," according to this haunting piece of reporting in today's New York Times, entitled "Baffling Rise in Suicides Plagues U.S. Military." But make no mistake: Suicides among veterans have risen too. The number of veterans who kill themselves is an unbelievable 22 per day, according to the Department of Vetern Affairs.

As for the active-duty soldiers, a "dauntingly complex web of factors" figures into the data about why they commit suicide. While "troops with multiple concussions were significantly more likely to report having suicidal thoughts" than others, "deployment and combat by themselves cannot explain the spiking suicide rates."

Pentagon data show that in recent years about half of service members who committed suicide never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. And more than 80 percent had never been in combat.

That doesn't fit the assumptions I had about military suicides. After reading the story I texted my brother—who was an officer in the Army for three years, ending in 2011, including a tour of duty in Iraq—to get his perspective. Why would the suicide rate be so high even among guys who'd never been in combat? My brother responded:

Because regardless of what they're called or what "stage" we're in, we're still at war. Being in a war zone for 9+ months is unbelievably stressful even if you're not in combat. Not to mention, you work 15 hours a day and get 0 days off, which is tough even in a regular job for that amount of time. You have no social life, and people are social beings. You just become numb mentally and emotionally. I was for months after I came back and my deployment wasn't that bad compared to some. One of my guys killed himself a week after we got back. He seemed fine.

That's the problem with The Stranger lately. We haven't used the word "homeless" enough. And we supposedly care about the homeless!

In conclusion, homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless homeless Ed Murray.

Joan Didion will be making a Seattle Arts & Lectures appearance at Benaroya Hall on Wednesday, June 5, and if you don't already have tickets, you need to get on it. I will be there, in a tuxedo, introducing her and asking the questions, which is an honor, as I am the Biggest Joan Didion Fanboy in the Universe™, although it's an honor tinged with anxiety, as she has been asked so many questions before. And, of course, she's already revealed so much about herself in her work. So I'm just curious: If you had an opportunity to talk about anything in the world with her, what would you ask?

...after the jump.

(The episode is not online yet.)

WHOA!!!!!!!! WHOA WHOA WHOA!! "Ladies and gentlemen, you heard it here first if you don't own the internet," BenDeLaCreme bellowed a few moments ago at Julia's. "Jinkx Monsoon is America's next drag superstar!"

When RuPaul said Jinkx's name, the crowd exploded. Two expertly timed confetti canons exploded, too. People were dancing, people were hugging, people were shrieking. On TV, the coronation felt a bit rushed, almost tacked on there at the end, with barely any time given to Jinkx's reaction to the news, but at Julia's, where it was sweltering, the moment didn't come a second too soon. At the outset of the evening, BenDeLaCreme and Major Scales, pretending not to know what was going to happen, were joking: "We've exorcised Facebook from the room." And then BenDeLaCreme added, "Is there anybody here who doesn't honest-to-god know what happens tonight?" And then, to BenDeLaCreme's surprise, a bunch of not-knowers raised their hands.

During one of the commercial breaks in the (interminable) build up to the finale, BenDeLaCreme asked Major Scales what it's like to be Jinkx Monsoon's roommate here in Seattle, and Major Scales said, "She's a ghost. Every time Jinkx comes home it's more like a cloud of smoke in the shape of her, trailed by dollar bills."

BenDeLaCreme noted that what Jinkx was wearing was "a Lady Von Stratton original"—and then Lady Von Stratton, who was in the house, stood up for a round of applause. Then it was back to sniping about Roxxxy Andrews, "the most beautiful Thundercat on RuPaul's Drag Race," BenDeLaCreme said acerbically. Both the hosts and the crowd said a great many not nice things about Roxxxy this evening ("Jinkx isn't here, so 'water off a duck's back' doesn't apply," said Major Scales, and BenDeLaCreme added, "Yes, we can be as bitchy as we want to be")... but who cares about Roxxxy. It was Jinkx's night. Jinkx earned this thing. Jinkx is genius. Even though Jerick Hoffer, Jinkx's creator, is only 25, he's an unbelievably gifted performer who's figured out how to be hilarious without being mean, which is no easy thing. And he's figured out how to turn his life story into art, which is even harder. And he can sing. And he can dance. And he can act. And the guy put himself through art school at Cornish by being the fucking janitor.

It's Monsoon Season. Officially.
— Jinkx Monsoon (@JinkxMonsoon) May 7, 2013

Condragulations, superstar.

[ Comment on this story ]

Karen Green was married to David Foster Wallace, and she's the one who discovered his body after he committed suicide. As Nelson writes in the Los Angeles Review of Books:

The tender things may be painful for Green to remember; due to her crystalline, sincere rendering, they are also painful to read about. Perhaps because this is not the memoir of a couple married for decades — Green and Wallace had been married for but four years at the time of his death — the love here conveyed feels hot, blooming, then disastrously cut short, tragically adumbrated by all the trauma and anger that constitute suicide’s ugly gifts.

Don't lock up here.

Consumer alert: bike rack edition. Until a few weeks ago, the corner of Pine and 11th had a bike store on it, and so there's this feeling in the air that this corner might be a good place to lock up a bike, kind of a muscle-memory thing, since this corner used to be so friendly to bikes, used to be the place where you could go to fill up your tires with an automatic pump instead of having to pump the pump yourself, and buy bike lights, and flirt with Velo employees. But now that Velo has moved downtown and the former entryway to the bike store has become a face-picking station for junkies, this rack has become the worst place to lock up your bike in America. If you leave it just for a few daylight hours, you're probably okay, but if you leave it overnight? Now that there are no eyes on the street anymore? Expect it to be dismembered beyond recognition.

I left mine there overnight inadvertently recently—The Stranger's office is about 100 inches away—and returned to find it missing a bike seat. Not even a nice bike seat, just some crummy squishy one of very little value. Why the hell would someone even want it? I noticed its absence when I went to get on my bike the next day to get to a meeting I was late for, and didn't have a spare half hour to wheel it up to 20/20 Cycle, so I left it for another night, because I am a blooming idiot, and the next day the back tire was gone too. The rear of the frame resting on the sidewalk, the chain in a sad-sack pile. So then I took it to 20/20 Cycle, and an employee said he's heard from other people that their bikes are getting stripped at this exact corner.

On the other side of where Velo used to be, there's another bike rack, and walking to work recently I came across this poor sucker:

Sucks.

A solo dance piece performed outside the Greyhound bus station—WHAT!?

Here’s a first: a solo dance piece by a classically trained local talent, to be performed on the street outside the Greyhound bus station, in the plaza of the US District Courthouse, and in a nearby parking garage (where a music video will be projected on a wall). The subject is Dickinson’s relationship with his mother, a dance teacher with schizophrenia who called him up about 10 years ago to tell him she was living on the street. It’s called Mother for You I Made This, and Dickinson will be performing it at 7 p.m. every night for the next two weeks, rain or shine. (Meet on the 800 block of Stewart St, across from the Greyhound station, velocitydancecenter.org/ezra-dickinson, 7 pm, $18, through May 19)

Is this just fantasy?" title="Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?" width="500" height="579" />

Kelly O

"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?"

At around 9:30 this evening on Capitol Hill, an employee of Bill's Off Broadway was standing outside explaining their busted window to someone on his phone. A phalanx of officers was lined up outside Walgreens, where a couple windows were broken. Another phalanx of officers was lined up against a road blockade across Pine Street at 11th Avenue, one block from the East Precinct police station. Still more phalanxes of officers were darting through streets on bikes, like schools of fish.

Cal Anderson Park seemed dead at first—at least by the playfields. Certainly the park was not full of protesters, as suggested on Twitter. But then as Kelly O and I walked farther into the park, we had to step aside to led an SPD SUV through. The reflection pool was black and sparkly. The other fountain (the volcano leading to the flat steps with the rocks) was dry. In between the two water features was another pool of officers, standing with bikes, their white reflective features shimmering in the distance. Kelly O and I got closer. The cops in the SUV drove up to the cops on bikes, and they talked for a while, and then all of a sudden a whole bunch of cops charged through the empty fountain. One on his bike drove through the center of it, up the shallow steps. They converged on a group of people at the far side of the fountain, and to shrieks like, "He didn't do it!" and "Don't arrest him!" and etc., they arrested a young man in face paint and a fedora.

"For what?" the arrestee yelled.

"Throwing rocks," was the reply.

The agitated friends started calling things out to him as he was arrested. One of them said, "You have to sing a song as you get arrested!"

"What should I sing?" the man being arrested called back.

"'Bohemian Rhapsody'!" someone yelled.

And then all his friends started shout-singing "Bohemian Rhapsody." Badly and with vigor. They started right at the "I see a little silhouette of a man..." part, because of course they did—right where the song has a panic attack. There were 10 or 11 of them, I'd say, these friends, going, "Thunderbolt of lightning, very very frightening me!!!" The man being arrested did not sing along. Even for the call-and-response parts. That seemed like a wise move on his part.

Then, with a cop on each arm, the man being arrested sauntered very casually toward the SPD SUV. He seemed resigned to his fate and determined to strike a heroic posture. And it was kinda working: He still had the straw fedora still on his head. A woman who'd been singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" called out to the cops, "Don't touch his hat!" Someone else called out, "You can't touch his hat!" Right away, one of the cops grabbed the hat off the man's head. And his friends went, "Aw, man!" and "No!" and etc. And then into the SPD SUV the man went.

[ Comment on this story ]

As you read on Slog yesterday, tonight's special guests are artist Amanda Manitach and Stranger photographer Kelly O. Kelly O just showed me what she'll be reading: Thee Psychick Bible, a manual about ritual, "practical magick," and the importance of doing things with meaning; and Pissing in the Snow, a 1972 collection of folktales from the Ozark mountains, including stories such as "The Half-Wit and the Eel" and "He Done It With a Bucket."

Amanda Manitach says she'll be reading a Gideon's Bible she picked up at a motel in Northern California on a road trip over Christmas, as well as Justine by the Marquis de Sade.

Two other past reading party special guests crossed my path today—the musician John Roderick and the entrepreneur Linda Derschang—and both of them mentioned they'll be at tonight's reading party too. (After all, it's the last one until September.) So I asked them what they'll be bringing to read. Roderick will be reading Nora Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck, and Derschang will be reading James Salter's latest, All That Is.

Nice choice, Derschang. I'm jealous. Although I'm bringing along some Joan Didion, so I'm not that jealous. And you? What will you be reading?

As always: This happens in the Fireside Room at the Sorrento Hotel, 6 pm to 9 pm. There's live music from 6 pm to 8 pm, it's all ages, and it's free. If you have never heard of the reading party before, start here.

The very last reading party (until September) is tomorrow! We take a summer hiatus—when it's finally nice enough to just read outside. As always, there will be special guests at tomorrow's reading party, and as always the special guests will not do anything different from what you will do: They'll just sit there and quietly read to themselves whatever they feel like reading while waiters bring them things and William Bielawski plays a harp. Amanda Manitach is an artist and a 2012 finalist for a Stranger Genius Award; she's also the curator of Hedreen Gallery. Kelly O is the staff pornographer of The Stranger, the Drunk of the Week columnist, and an amazing storyteller.

As for the drink special: Time for something new, don't you think? Tomorrow night's drink special will be a $5 Kentucky Mule—bourbon, fresh lime, and ginger beer. Light. Refreshing. Verge-of-summer-y.

Fireside Room at the Sorrento Hotel, 6 pm to 9 pm, live music from 6 pm to 8 pm, all ages, free. If you have never heard of the reading party before, start here.

Brendan Kiley's review of Black Watch won't be on Slog until tomorrow, and won't be in print until Wednesday, but here's the Stranger Suggest preview for Black Watch, and I just snuck a peek at Brendan's review, and this paragraph makes me very much want to see it:

It is an intimate show, and the cavernous Paramount Theater has reduced its seating capacity from 3,000 to 419 for the occasion. The audience sits on the stage, just feet away from 10 tightly wound actors who spring from a Scottish barroom to Iraqi battlefields and back again. During one transition, soldiers are birthed from the inside of a pool table, cutting its red felt open from below with a long blade and standing back-to-back on its top with long guns in hand, nervously scanning the audience.

The two-for-the-price-of-one tickets for Tuesday's and Wednesday's shows are available online and at the box office up until showtime with no password needed, according to Seattle Theater Group public relations manager Antonio Hicks.

I'm going tomorrow night.

[ Comment on this story ]

Rebecca Mead says it's "dispiriting":

Her experience is not so different from that of many young American women now, caught in a post-post-feminist narrative in which it is proposed that sexual emancipation may be achieved through emotional disengagement. Whatever light “Waiting to Be Heard” does or does not shed on the awful death of Meredith Kercher, it offers a dispiriting account of prevailing mores. It is not new for students to “give casual sex a chance.” (Today’s twenty-year-olds may be surprised to learn that even their parents might have tried it.) It is new for girls to strive to adopt the sexual behavior of the most opportunistic guy on campus. “I wanted sex to be about empowerment and pleasure, not about Does this person like me? Will he still like me tomorrow?” Knox writes. But if empowerment, that much abused and much diminished term, means anything it means being able to say no as well as yes, without censure or shame.

Mead's point is subtle and finely argued, but there's a faint whiff of disgust in it, isn't there? The comparison Mead makes to Portrait of a Lady does something to honor Knox's own desires and agency as she set out for Italy, but then the knife turns, and it turns on the question of Knox's attitude about sex. I mean, if an adult woman wants to "adopt the sexual behavior of the most opportunistic guy on campus," shouldn't she be allowed to? Isn't that her prerogative? Granted, The Stranger hasn't gotten our copy yet, so I'm just spouting off here. But isn't there something a little dispiriting in what Mead's saying, too?

We heard today from the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL) that Brendan Kiley is going to become one of only two journalists in the organization's 25-year history to receive their annual Champion of Justice Award. "Past recipients include a Supreme Court Justice, a Senator, a Representative, the Innocence Project Northwest, and other esteemed individuals," WACDL writes. The award is for "an individual who may not be a lawyer, and may not be a member of WACDL, but who—through legislative, judicial, journalistic, or humanitarian pursuits—has staunchly preserved or defended the constitutional rights of Washington residents and endeavored to ensure justice and due process for those accused of crime."

WACDL singled out not only Kiley's reporting about the grand jury refusers who were jailed for failing to testify about other people's political beliefs, but also his extensive reporting about drug distribution and sentencing disparities and related issues (see here, here, here).

In their internal nomination materials, WACDL wrote, regarding Kiley's reporting about grand jury refusers:

Few mainstream journalists are willing to confront the ethical issues associated with these proceedings. Brendan Kiley is the only one who has been willing to move beyond "is it legal?" to "is it moral?" And although his interest was initially piqued by the iniquitousness of the grand jury, he has written several feature-length articles since, humanizing the individuals caught in the dragnet, decrying the cruel and arbitrary conditions at the Federal Detention Center, and updating the public about the status of the case. Throughout, Kiley's approach has been replete with humanity, eloquence, and—despite the grimness of the issue—even humor.

Hear, hear! Congratulations, Brendan.

[ Comment on this story ]

OK, guys. Real talk. Truth time. I love theater when it's good, but I'm also easily bored. And theater can be… you know, boring. As hell. And long. It can be so long. Someone says "three-and-a-half-hour play" and my interest in seeing that play starts to power down. Someone says "two intermissions" and my panic trigger triggers. For these reasons, I'd never gotten around to seeing August: Osage County, even though it won the Pulitzer Prize and it's been produced in Seattle before and everyone always says it's great. In my defense, everyone is often wrong about things. Balagan Theatre's right at the end of their run of of August: Osage County, a production Goldy has raved about already, a production we told you on cover of The Stranger to go see, and last night I took our own advice and went and saw it. And holy moly with a Stoli, it's amazeballs.

If that's three and a half hours, it's a magic trick—it FLIES by. If you don't know anything about the show, keep it that way. If you want a hint, it's one of those plays where vicious characters with lurid secrets eat each other alive through dialogue. In other words, the best kind of play—in the grand tradition of eating-each-other-alive plays like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Doubt. There are like 20 actors in this thing, but the ones who deserve singling out for extra amazeballsness are John Q. Smith as Charlie Aiken, Teri Lazzara as Barbara Fordham (losing her shit in that photo above), and Shellie Shulkin as Violet (below, left, pointing at Lazzara while reaming her out).

Word's gotten around: Balagan's production has sold out all of its online tickets for its last two shows, tonight and tomorrow night at 8 pm. HOWEVER! A source tells me there are still tickets available at the door. Here's how to get to the theater. Do it.

Last Tuesday's Drag Race post here on Slog mentioned in a celebratory headline that Jinkx Monsoon made it into the top three, and commenters were very, very not happy. So... so as not to spoil anyone's alerts, I'm not saying nada until after the jump. No, I am saying nada. Anyway, please do go down into the jump so we can talk about whatever it was that may or may not have happened last night! Allegedly! Also, your urgent attention is needed! I will explain.

Plus! Jinkx Monsoon's alter-ego Jerick Hoffer was at Julia's last night, interviewed by BenDeLaCreme, and many hilarious and insightful things were said, the best of which are after the jump. See you down there.

WHAT. THE. HELL.

First thing's first: Go to this Facebook page and vote for Jinkx Monsoon. Then go to this World of Wonder post and vote there too. Then go on Twitter and send a tweet that says "@RuPaulsDragRace Jinkx Monsoon #dragrace." Among Stranger staff, Dan Savage has voted, Cienna Madrid has voted, David Schmader has voted, and I have voted. If you don't have Twitter, just freakin' get it already, and make Savage and Cienna and Schmader and me the first people you follow. Again, you wanna tweet "@RuPaulsDragRace Jinkx Monsoon #dragrace."

Have you done it yet?

You're good?

Good.

ANYWAY, as promised above, there was a viewing party at Julia's on Broadway last night, and even though Jinkx Monsoon could not make it, thanks to a wrinkle in time/space Jerick Hoffer could. (He had to race straight to Julia's from the airport—he's been performing around the country.) As usual, when the commercials came on, BenDeLaCreme and Jerick Hoffer got to talking. Some of what was said:

"Jinkx and I are very good friends but I've only ever seen you on TV!"
—BenDeLaCreme to Jerick Hoffer, when he came out in pants and a top hat (with bunny ears)

"I was so miserable."
—Jerick Hoffer on the humidity in Florida, where he just was

"This is Seattle bronzed. You've got that three-hours-of-sunlight glow."
—BenDeLaCreme complimenting Jerick Hoffer on a non-existent tan

"Alaska, Detox, and I ended up in a jacuzzi tub together. There were bubbles. Discretion bubbles."
—Jerick Hoffer on seeing his fellow drag stars recently

"Ke$ha delivered a very interesting performance."
—Jerick Hoffer on getting to go to the NewNowNext Awards in LA

"If there's one thing a person with ADD and narcolepsy shouldn't do, it's painstakingly glue things to a corset."
—Jerick Hoffer discussing his difficulty with the candy-inspired clothing challenge two episodes ago

"The true entertainers, who wow you—you don't care about what they're wearing. My favorite entertainers—I don't remember what they were wearing, I remember their performances."
—Jerick Hoffer on his antipathy toward clothes, sewing, fashion, etc.

"Do you just get Grindr messages like "Roxxxy sucks!'?"
—BenDeLaCreme asking about the loss of anonymity that comes with the visibility of a national TV show

"I can't pick out an onion at without someone going, 'Yeah, Jinkx, get that onion!'"
—Jerick Hoffer on what it's like to go to the grocery store these days

"It's weird that this nationally aired drag show of queens fighting for a crown would bring my family together, but I'll take it."
—Jerick Hoffer on members of his family who hadn't been speaking with each other who are now speaking with each other

OK, now, some housekeeping: Next week's RuPaul's Drag Race is thought to be most likely a "clips show" looking back on everything that's happened but with a bunch of new material, including all the material that would have gone into an Untucked last night (as there was no Untucked last night). Jinkx Monsoon will not be at Julia's next week because she will be filming the reunion show, wherein all the drag queens from the season reunite and learn who the winner is. The week after that, the reunion show airs, and Jinkx Monsoon has to be in New York City for a viewing party there, so she will not be at Julia's when the reunion show airs either. BenDeLaCreme and other guests hosts will be at Julia's for the next two weeks' worth of parties though. Then, on May 13, Jinkx Monsoon will be back at Julia's for a big celebratory to-do that is sure to sell out, if it's not sold out already. Whether she wins or loses Drag Race, she has plenty of reason to celebrate.

Once again: Vote early! Vote often! Tell your friends!

THE COURT: Can you afford a lawyer?
THE DEFENDANT: No.
THE COURT: Let the record reflect that I believe the defendant has said, "No."

(Completely unrelated thought: A theater company should stage this. Or a dance company? Satori Group? The Ensemble? New City Theater? It's so tense, and yet it's all subtext—almost nothing is said. Plus, imagine the all the beeping, wheezing, gurgling machinery he's hooked up to...)

As Schmader wrote in a 2010 review film:

What The Tillman Story exposes are the grotesque machinations undertaken by military officials to bamboozle Tillman's family and co-opt the tragedy for their own ass-covering ends. The engines of this exposé are the surviving Tillmans themselves—Pat Tillman's mother, father, brothers, and wife, whom we see being driven to obsession by the shameless prevarications of military officials and who present a portrait of their son/brother/husband that is shockingly at odds with so much of what's come before. Rather than a heavenly patriot or ego-driven sports star, Tillman was a well-read, intellectually curious atheist who grew to openly question the U.S. missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and hoped only to make it out alive. He didn't, and The Tillman Story is the closest thing America has produced to a proper tribute, offering a maddening, heartbreaking, fittingly complicated portrait of a real-life American hero and the country that failed him.

As more details are emerging about Tamerlan Tsarnaev's five-and-a-half month trip to Dagestan in 2011—a trip the FBI is being faulted for not following up on—Senator Lindsey Graham is saying that what tripped up the FBI was that Tsarnaev's name was misspelled on flight records. Graham says his source is an assistant director at the FBI, although the FBI's version of events doesn't mention the name with a typo in it.

You have seen this before. An immigrant is having a drink by himself at a bar. He is enjoying his day off. He works so hard for his money. He is giving himself a little treat by not ordering the cheapest beer. He is dressed in some of his best threads and wears with pride a hat that's a bit fancy—it's a safari Panama straw fedora. Suddenly, a group of drunken white men burst into the bar. They are loud and laugh at anything that falls from their mouths. As one of them requests a bucket of beer (it's party time!) from the bartender, another begins to show great interest in the immigrant's exotic hat. "Man, that's really cool," the white man says to the immigrant. The immigrant smiles weakly and continues drinking. "Can I try it?" asks the white man. But before the immigrant even gives him an answer, the man grabs the hat, puts it on his own head, and begins to move his neck back and forth like a funky chicken. "Man, I should buy one of these. It's so cool."

You have seen this sort of thing before. You have seen it and felt your soul cringe, felt it crinkle like tinfoil. Oh no, he didn't. Oh yes, he did—and he just won't stop doing his jive thing with the rim of the hat low on his eyes.

Keep that image in your mind and now think about the Beacon Hill Library...
