How Buster Simpson Turned His Righteous Anger About Development, the Environment, and Seattle's Economic Disparity into Art

He’s naked and flinging chunks of limestone at the World Trade Center, each chunk blasted with the word β€œPURGE.” valerie silver/courtesy of the artist

as an arborist, i can assure you that once a tree has been subjected to that level of hacking--especially a cherry tree--it is FUBAR, and cutting it down is the only sensible thing to do. i burst out laughing when i saw that picture.

#ellarosa, The condition of the tree was not the point. It was a connection to the past of that area.
The pro-nesting around that first tree set the ground work, sort a speak, for the saving of the second tree.
Google map shows the second tree is still at Post Alley and Stewart.
I hope it still gets it tree vitamins and sprouts live on some were else.
Simpson has always inspired me to plant the right thing in the wrong place. (It is really hard to get ride of potato plants once they establish;) thank you Buster Simpson!

Saginaw Michigan is a Lefty Frizzel song, not Johnny Horton.

Art in Woodstock?

Woodstock was art.

Same with Seattle.

Great article Jen!

Why do you keep mentioning his age?
Is it somehow relevant to what you are saying?

Is YOUR age relevant as well? Should you mention it in each thing you write?

Its kind of like how some journalists always mention what a woman is wearing, but not a man. Somehow its important to you to keep telling us how OLD Buster is, but not how old all the other artists you write about are?

I think the fewer comments an article generates the better it must be. Kudos on a well-written, informative piece.

I'm so glad Buster Simpson is finally getting the local recognition he deserves.

I would, however, like to point out a mistake from this article. Mr. Simpson is not the "lead artist" on the seawall project. The piece of public art he has been commissioned to make is being funded through the seawall project. And, it certainly won't be his biggest project to date. It won't be connected to the seawall itself, either, but rather out on a new habitat "beach" that will be visible from the waterfront. I'm pretty sure he will try to work with natural processes, too. That said, whatever he makes will most likely be amazing. Thanks.

Buster Simpson's show is the best show in seatown in years !!

You did a wonderful job on this bio Ms. Graves.

I'm looking at some of the questions Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi asked other creative people in his book, Flow. Whether conscious of it or not, I felt I have a bit better grasp on what Creativity really means.

Please wait...
