Ineffective Recruiting Techniques

Don't go to remote campsites with racist nut-jobs you met on the Internet:

COVINGTON, La. — An Oklahoma woman invited to a rural Louisiana campsite for a Ku Klux Klan initiation ritual was shot and killed after she asked to be taken back to town, the sheriff of a New Orleans suburb said Tuesday.

Eight people were arrested after authorities found the woman's body hidden under some brush, on the side of a road several miles from the remote campsite where the initiation was planned.

Investigators found weapons, several flags and six Klan robes at the campsite, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said in a news release.

Strain said the woman, whose identity was not released, was recruited over the Internet to participate in the ritual and then return to her home state to find other members for the white supremacist group.

But Strain said the group's leader, Raymond "Chuck" Foster, 44, shot and killed the woman Sunday after a fight broke out when she tried to leave. Foster was charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bond.

Capt. George Bonnett, a spokesman for the sheriff's department, said he didn't know what the initiation involved.

"We haven't completely sorted out if they finished the initiation," he said. "I assume that they had started it, but I don't know if they were finished."

Enriching the Lives of Animals! (Not You, Turkeys)

The folks at the Woodland Park Zoo just sent out a press release hyping their upcoming Turkey Toss, "part of the zoo’s ongoing enrichment program to help enrich the lives of the zoo’s animals, promote natural animal behavior, keep animals mentally and physically stimulated and provide added enjoyment for zoo visitors."

Because nothing's more natural than an African lion munching on a defrosted turkey from Albertson's.

WHEN:
Saturday, November 22, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Jaguar, 10:00 a.m.
Snow leopard, 10:00 a.m.

Jaguar, sure. Snow leopard, got it. Wolves, duuuh. But piranhas? Lemurs? Golden lion tamarin fucking monkeys? These are not exactly turkeys' natural foes. Do monkeys even like turkey?

The New Coke?

A friend pointed out to me today that she'd gotten a bottle of Coke Zero, and that she couldn't drink it. Not because the artificial sweeteners had finally rendered her colon useless, but because the bottle lid smelled like body odor. Isolated incident? Not according to her coworkers, who have also drank the stank, and a Google search for "coca-cola smells like bo" brought this story up:

I went to take a sip from the bottle, and I smelled a terrible smell. Something smelled like body odor. Oh my gosh, did I forget deodorant? I didn't realize that my body could smell so foul! After a quick and discreet arm pit sniff, I realized it wasn't me. What was it? Like a human hound dog, I started sniffing around. The smell was coming from-MY DIET COKE! Ahhhh! The cap to my diet coke smelled like body odor. It was the most disgusting thing ever, so I of course shoved it in Heather's face so she could smell, and I took it back to work for everyone else to smell.

This girl proceeded to call Coca-Cola, complain, and get a free eight-pack, which she admits didn't stink. But what say you, soda nation? Any stinky Cokes in Seattle? Happily ignoring corn syrup beverages? Sticking with coffee to promote negative local stereotypes? Wish this was less of a worthless story? Mr. Pibb 4 life?

Seattle: It Rains Here!

Well, it sure did rain last night. It rained everywhere. From the sky, on the roof, on my head, on cats, on dogs, on squirrels, on the homeless, on pretty ladies, on smokers, on public art, on trees, on lakes (redundant), on fugitives from the law, on any pies set outside to cool and then forgotten. It rained, rained, rained!

Apparently, it also rained in my car.

This morning, unsuspecting, I went out and I dunked my dainty toe right in there. In that dirty puddle! IN MY CAR! It is deceptively deep. Who could have anticipated a deep, dirty puddle where my driver's side floor used to be? What is a dirty puddle doing in my car, anyway? The window wasn't open. The door wasn't open (or was it?).

After the jump, please enjoy* the arduous process of bailing out my vehicle.
(*PROCESS** NOT ACTUALLY ENJOYABLE.)

Two Weird Things in the Mail Today

First thing in the mail: A mailer from Chris Gregoire that bails on the issues and instead puts the weight on being an Obama hanger-on. "If the policies supported by a new White House are blocked here at home in Washington state, that won't do us any good." That's it? Blanket Obama support? Uh... refreshing.

But what got my attention was the address label:

That reads Samuel MacHkovech (thanks for hitting the auto-Irish button, I guess) and Andrew. Andrew? He's my duplex neighbor, and we have different mailboxes. At first, I thought Dems might be cutting corners and co-mailing flyers to people registered at the same address... but my girlfriend's registered here as well. She didn't get this one.

If two guys live in the same building and they're registered as Dems, I guess Chris Gregoire is bright enough to dismiss a household's fag-hag and see what's really going on. These guys are gay. And Irish.

Second thing in the mail: Got an envelope from an old buddy today, addressed to Sam "Motherfucker" Machkovech, and the only things inside were a check for some owed money and this utterly random photo of a tied-up monkey with a diaper:

I'm not sure which of the two mail items affected me more.

Doody Calls

The other day a friend came over to my house all in a tizzy. He said that he'd just been listening to NPR, and was fucking positive he heard them interview an Ohio McCain/Palin supporter named "Moose Doody."

He's the head of the Lawrence County Republicans, and his name is actually Ray "Moose" Dutey.
