Black Barbie's Nigerian Wedding

Posted by on Fri, Jun 29, 2012 at 11:51 AM

For your pleasure, a Barbie-themed Yoruba wedding by.London-based wedding photographer Obi Nwokedi:

The bride is hidden under a veil at the beginning of the ceremony. The groom's family ceremonially checks to see that she is the right girl.

The groom and his male relatives lie prostrate before the bride's family as a sign of respect.

Wedding guests shower the couple with money in celebration of their union

i believe the custom is to actually put a different girl under the bridal veil at fist and present her as the bride--then the veil is pulled back, and the groom (or father of the bride) is asked if this is the intended bride. the groom (or dad), of course, answers no. then they break out into a big song praising the tricky trickster god, then the real bride is brought out and the nuptials begin. i've been to one of those suckers.

Very well done. So often these Barbie shoots end up having a rather nasty feel to them and show an exclusively white world.

I'm now on the hunt for one of the dolls with those natural looking curls. Those are gorgeous.

I am missing my huge family of Barbies (and their huge box of extremely fancy party clothes) right now! I gave them to a deserving recipient but today? I miss the Barbies!!!

Zuulabelle- That doll is Nichelle, from the Generation Girl Barbie line. You can easily find her on eBay with the search string "Nichelle Generation Girl".

I loved that line of dolls.
