Memorial Day Weekend: Some Seriously Hippie Shit

So, Folklife is obviously this weekend, and it's super fun and you should go—if you also like drowning in a river of patchouli-scented fish guts. Just kidding! You should go! But ew! But there are few other things on the News Calendar worth checking out:

On both Saturday and Sunday, Seattle's very own Patagonia store will be hosting "Save Bristol Bay: A Weekend With Trout Unlimited and Sage Fly Rods." Fish preservation and salmon jerky will abound.

On Sunday, which will allegedly only be partly cloudy, head down to gorgeous Seward Park for the Good Karma 5K Run / 4K Walk, "Seattle's only choose your own charity fun run." Registration begins at 7:30 am.

On Memorial Day Monday, there will be the annual ceremony at Benaroya Hall's Garden of Remembrance. Other remembrance ceremonies to be found here.

And if you want to lift your spirits afterwards, why not head over to Seattle Center for that newly-constructed attraction that has everyone in a tizzy: yes, I'm talking about the Seattle Center Playway, which will feature inflatable slides, a climbing wall, and a zip line with no age restrictions. Everything is pretty cheap, and there's a fucking zip line. Ride it.

Check out, bookmark, love and live the full news calendar here.

1. Is there a SOBRIETY restriction on the zipline?

2. What the hell is the "Playway", anyway? Didn't we have a whole bunch of creaky carnival rides and crap that we GOT RID OF?

Is Folklife actually fun? I thought it was comparable to "A kick in the face while drowning in fish guts." Don't we have a party line to tow, here?

Why do we play in the driveway and then drive into the Playway?

Folk life ..... Crusties meet pot heads meet gangbangers. I think I'll stay home and bathe.

@1, it's actually called that for a funny reason. It's part of the old World's Fair anniversary celebration, right? The funtimes recreation section of the grounds back then was called the "Gayway". So "Playway" is a brouhaha-dodging homage to that original name.

Is there a "Flight To Mars" on this Playway you write of? If not, I am not interested.

Hmm. "Playway", not "Gayway"? They have sanitized all the damn fun out of it. I bet there's a Tipsy Inspector at the zipline, too. "You must be this sober to ride this ride."

No thank you.

P.s. if they brought back the Flight to Mars, I would bring all my dates there! I hear it's rotting away in some rich weirdo's barn out in eastern Kentucky or something.

Folklife is what Bumbershoot would be if they subtracted all the bands that an adult would want to see, and left the kind of entertainment whose venue is the sidewalk of Pike Place Market with a hat full of coins in front of it.

Folklife is for patchouli scented dullards. And musicians who can actually play musical instruments and vocalists who can actually sing. Yawn. Jazz. Yawn. Tango. Yawn.

Thanks Unpaid Intern, for our annual reminder that The Stranger finds Folk Life to be officially uncool. And the shtick about hippies and patchouli just gets funnier every year.

Looks like the gangbangers came and shot it up.

What is this, "bust a cap in his ass" in Ghetto Seattle this year?
