The NHL Playoffs Have Begun!

Posted by on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 3:18 PM

And shit's already getting crazy.

Last night the Flyers delivered a huge upset to the Penguins, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win in overtime.

The Preds won last night, too, against the Detroit Red Wings and as great as that victory feels, it was tainted a bit by Shea Weber's insane move in the last second of the game. He grabbed Henrik Zetterberg's head and slammed it into the glass. TWICE.

Why, Shea? WHY?

Zetterberg's helmet was cracked but, thankfully, his head is okay. All Weber has said about the incident is: "I'm just glad he didn't get hurt." Hockey blogs buzzed with the possibility and likelihood of suspension, but this afternoon NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan decided to fine Weber $2,500.

I'm sure there will be some retaliation come game two tomorrow. In other Red Wings news, Helm is out for the rest of the playoffs after suffering lacerated tendons in is forearm. He cut his arm on Alexander Radulov's skate. OUCH.

Also: The Canucks lost 4-2 and right wing Byron Bitz will face a disciplinary hearing today for his hit against Kyle Clifford.

A Canucks loss is always something to toast. I sure hope they go one-and-done this year.

I remember this one time where I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

Does SLOG's sudden surge in hockey reporting have anything to do with Democrat mayor trying to foist off a worthless piece of property on the public for 4x times the (exceedingly pricey) value that was paid for it?

Too many penalties last night. The refs f*cking ruined the preds/wings game as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully they'll quit calling sh*t penalties and let the guys skate tonight and the rest of the Playoffs...

My daughter already had the TV going on the Preds game when I got home from work last night. It was nirvana. I walked into the living room with a cheshire cat grin on my face. And the fun will continue for the next two months. Yay.

That kind of behavior is abhorrent, and it did occur in the final second of regulation play. A penalty shot should have been awarded to the Red Wings.

I strongly believe this, and I -HATE- the Red Wings.

Yeah...I just have to stop watching or listening to Pens-Flyers games. Every one I have seen or listened to, the Pens have lost (granted, they lost all but two games to the Flyers this year, but still...). I must be a jinx. I'll just keep following the games via the live blog on the Post-Gazette website.

A deliberate foul that cracks a player's helmet should be a forty-game suspension. Helmet contact cannot be allowed, period. Hockey's a great game but you fans are deluding yourselves.

It wasn't a play for which rules allowed a penalty shot. Regardless, it was a total dick move and I hope Weber gets fucking railed for it tomorrow night. Kronwall should go after him. Fuck the freshman Predators.

And this is example number 987,214 why the NHL should be labeled a criminal organization and prevented from having another game until it agrees to control this shit.

I was at the game years ago when Forbes blinded Boucha with his stick for no reason. There have been plenty of other assaults on ice. A few years ago one goon crippled a player by jumping on him & bashing his head into the ice. He may still be playing but the injured player never recovered.

The owners have no respect for the players or the game itself. If they did these sorts of attacks would not happen. You never see them in amateur - in college or international play only in the NHL and their goon saloon minor leagues.

IT IS INSANE THAT WEBER ISN'T SUSPENDED

Supreme Ruler: Oh C'maaaan. A lot of us Slog hogs like hockey and the playoffs just started. Also, this is hardly a "sudden surge in hockey reporting" by Megan. She ALWAYS slogs about hockey.
