Help a Genius Out

Posted by on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Out of necessity, I have a strict no-Slogging-about-Kickstarters rule. I get multiple requests for me to Slog about Kickstarters every single day. Some of them are worthy. Many of them are not. Some of them, unfortunately, disappear once funding is reached, or provide something much less than promised. The risk is just too great, and I don't want to try our readers' patience.

However! There is one single exception to this rule. If the person asking for funds is a Stranger Genius of Literature, I will absolutely let our readers know about their project. So here it is: Jim Woodring has posted a USA Projects page that asks for $9,000 to help him complete his next book, which will be titled Fran.

Ordinarily I support myself with sales of speculative and commissioned art, and the occasional simpatico commercial job. When drawing a book, though, that work ceases, and survival becomes a challenge. I don't drink, take drugs or play the horses; any funding I receive from this United States Artists Special Project will be spent entirely and judiciously on those most essential of art supplies: food and shelter.

If you don't know about Woodring, my profile of him can be found right here. Gifts for contributions include autographs, certificates, original art, and whole libraries of Woodring's work. If you enjoy supporting the arts, this is a worthy cause.

Avoiding it made you lose out on this beauty (which I proudly own):

Mega-Millions.

Doesn't it basically lay turds on the whole idea of "crowd-sourcing".

What kind of stupid world do we live in where publishers are not scrambling to fund an artist like Woodring?

This sounds like a worthy project indeed. I don't think "genius" is too strong a word for Woodring.

But if we do that, won't that stop the Rapture?
