The Wednesday Morning News

Posted by on Wed, Mar 14, 2012 at 8:58 AM

Santorum Sweeps South! Mitt Romney's southern strategy and his huge money advantage paid off big last night as he trounced challenger Ron Paul in the race for third place in the Mississippi and Alabama Republican presidential primaries. Also, Rick Santorum edged out Newt Gingrich for first place finishes in both Republican strongholds.

Romney Sweeps South Pacific! The "Romney Tsunami" washed ashore again yesterday as the GOP frontrunner added American Samoa to Guam, the Northern Marianas, and the Virgin Islands in his quest to prove his bonafides in US territories that have no say in November's presidential election. Romney hopes to complete his sweep of non-voting tropical paradises with a big win in Puerto Rico on Sunday. Also, he won Hawaii.

Syria's news... still sucks.

Kenyan-Socialism is destroying our economy! With American businesses plagued by regulatory uncertainty and the crushing weight of President Obama's socialist policies, the NASDAQ closed at 3,040 yesterday, its highest mark since December 11, 2000, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 218 points to its highest close since 2007.

Nothing like a hot cup of tea and a multimillion dollar bonus to relieve the stress. Fifteen of the nation's 19 largest banks passed the Federal Reserve's latest round of financial "stress tests," suggesting that they are capable of surviving another severe economic downturn. Yay! Of course, that also means that four banks failed, including giant Citibank.

Because guns make us safer. A three-year-old boy fatally shot himself in the head with a gun allegedly found in his parents' car, while stopped at a gas station in Tacoma. This is western Washington's third incidence of child-on-child gun violence in as many weeks.

Not all Joint Base Lewis-McChord servicemen go on killing sprees. No, some of them allegedly hire hit men to do their killing for them.

Finally, a huge store of useful information will be available right from our computer keyboards! In a blow to bookshelf makers worldwide, the 244-year-old Encyclopaedia Britannica will cease print publication, and move entirely to digital form.

What happens if college basketball throws a National Invitational Tournament, and nobody shows up? This.

Has anyone taken a look at the number of LDS members who live in the South Pacific which could've swayed towards Romney's way in votes? Because I know there are tons of Mormons in Hawaii. BYU has an extension campus on the north east side of Oahu by North Beach.

Half full or half empty (Seattle PI) = nobody (The Stranger). In that case, according to The Stranger,
nobody approves of President Obama's performance, according to polls.

Also, it is with schadenfreude delight that I report your former Vice President cancelled a speaking engagement in Toronto as he believes it is too dangerous to travel to Canada.

If you're a fan of investment banks being quit in marvelous style, don't miss the lovely Goldman spanking by Gary Smith, its executive director and head of the firm’s United States equity derivatives business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He is quitting today in fine form (NYT link):

There are already wonderful parodies out there, including this from Darth Vader:
After almost 12 years, first as a summer intern, then in the Death Star and now in London, I believe I have worked here long enough to understand the trajectory of its culture, its people and its massive, genocidal space machines. And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it.
To put the problem in the simplest terms, throttling people with your mind continues to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making people dead.

It just tickles me that those right wing southern Baptists are supporting a northern Catholic because they have no choice. They will never bring themselves to vote for a Mormon.

@1 Have you gone to the Polynesian cultural center they run there? NOT recommended! The big sailing canoe is nice to look at, but otherwise it's pretty lame. A little song-and-dance (literally) about each island. The Samoan presentation had the biggest building and group (about 6 people) and was led by a 40-ish guy who was obviously part haole (and included his kids, probably, since two of the dancers had quite similar faces) and another guy of about the same age who also looked more European than Maori. I guessed they were more or less in charge. Other islands have just one or two people in their presentations, IIRC, mostly younger.

There is a horrible presentation in which they try to claim that the Polynesians came from Central America, based on one word and food item, ignoring all the genetic and other linguistic data which overwhelmingly supports the model that they spread out from the area of Indonesia and across the South Pacific. Of course, the Polynesians were perfectly capable of having sailed to Central America and picked up that one sweet potato or whatever it was, but that wouldn't fit the Mormon mythology, so look away! No data to see here!

But, but, if the Garden of Eden was in Missouri, they had to have originated there, right?

More senseless gun deaths: where are the gun nuts and their specious justifications?

More kids die on bicycles than from guns every year (by a pretty wide margin, in fact). Looking forward to your specious justification of that.

@5: Are you kidding? The announced crowd was just over 2,000, and I'd be surprised if half that many were there.

@12, that's because most kids don't ride guns around, or get shot with bikes.

@12 The sort of enlightened liberal who preaches against gun ownership would never want to ban bicycles, because riding a bicycle is something he enjoys. On the other hand he has no desire to own a gun.

Again (and again) you lying strawman spewing right wing nut jobs show yourselves for the cretins you are:

No enlightened liberal "preaches" against gun ownership. I own several myself, including a "military style" rifle and a "tactical" shotgun, mainly to be sure it's not just you NRA cretins who have firearms when the revolution comes.

Being an enlightened liberal and a responsible gun owner, they are no where a 3 y/o can ever get them.

The PoS who left the gun under the front seat of his car with two small children should lose any right to own a firearm for life.

What @16 said. I've probably killed more animals than most "hunters" ever have.

They taste good.

Clarifications:

1. Ron Paul won the popular vote in the Virgin Islands. The media is reporting Romney as the winner because he got the most delegates. In every other state/territory the media has reported the winner to be the candidate with the popular vote. They pulled a switch-aroo-skee on this one to keep RP out of the news.

2. NASDAQ has nothing to do with how well the economy is doing. That's what eighth graders think.

3. Because cops make us safer. One of the child shooting deaths occurred when the kid found his dad's gun, who is a police officer.

@18: In every other state/territory the candidate with the popular vote has also been the candidate with the most delegates. The popular vote doesn't matter, doubly so when the populace in question doesn't even get a vote in November.
