Gregoire: "This is signed!"

  • E.S.

As governor for more than seven years, this is one of my proudest moments. And most surely today is a proud day in the history of the Legislature and the state of Washington. It is a day historians will mark as a milestone for equal rights. A day when we did what was right, we did what was just, and we did what was fair. We stood up for equality and we did it together – Republicans and Democrats, gay and straight, young and old, and a variety of religious faiths. I’m proud of who and what we are in this state.

I’m proud that our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal. They will be equal. I’m proud that children in our schools and neighborhoods will not have to wonder why their loving parents are considered different than other loving parents. I’m proud of parents who have fought so fiercely for the rights of their much-loved gay and lesbian children. And I’m proud that children who discover they are gay and lesbian can feel good about themselves.

Let us all enjoy and relish this great news! Congratulations to all who worked hard in this state including HRC and especially ERW, Legal Marriage Alliance, PFLAG, and past organizations like Marriage Equality Now among others.

I don't know what you guys are so happy about. Ever since we legalized gay marriage in MA, it's been just awful here. Earthquakes, floods, the sky splits open, rains of blood, giant scorpions that feed on traditional marriages...

It ain't over, folks. We gotta win in November, at the ballot box (if they gather the signatures, which they're likely to), and then we have to get the votes in Congress to repeal DOMA and make sure we have a president who would sign a DOMA repeal into law.

Lots of work left to do.

So SSM is on hold till the haters get the sigs they need to overturn this? Is that how they're playing this?
Posted by Jersey on February 13, 2012 at 1:27 PM
giffy 30
@29 Well it is on hold until June regardless as the State Constitution requires a 90 days wait from the end of the session. If they get enough signatures then it would be on hold until after the vote.

It's technically the law, it's just not enacted yet so it doesn't have the force of law. And even if a referendum is filed it's still a suspension pending verification. It otherwise assumes an enactment date with all the other bills on the 7th of June.

The law is blind to challenges. That's why its effective date is the same as all other bills until the referendum petition drive is done.

Anyway, that's that. Until June 6th this is till going to happen. If they get a referendum through that changes, but we'll fight and win.

Always remember that the anti-gay activists got to the ballot and lost at the ballot on a message of "R-71 is marriage" and here we are, 3 years later. We did all the heavy lifting now we just need to stay on message, tell our stories and have internet shouting matches until either the 7th of June or the 7th of December.

Then we'll all get gay-married.

Any other hopeless romantics out there who also wish she would have signed it tomorrow? I mean... one more day, and it's all hearts and chocolate.

Still this is a wonderful wonderful day. What a great thing. :)

I mean seriously, your "wah wah suck up everything the Right-wing gives you, because I'm poor and have it worse and besides liberals are bad anyway" comes off as zero empathy for others while taking smug, nasty glee in seeing them suffer.

Even if you've had a hard life, you'd still make others suffer and crow about your own hardships. You may have some sort of mental illness way beyond depression, but does resigning others to the same fate really make you feel better?

Kitten Koder, several people here have ascribed thoughts to you, but I'm pretty unclear on what you're talking about. What 'real' minorities are being ignored, and how?

@39: She's an asexual, so perhaps she gets all sorts of butthurt because people don't fight for her right to... not have sex with anyone?
