Gay Kids Are Still Killing Themselves

Posted by on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 10:34 AM

And it's not because gay kids are still being told that they're sick and sinful by their preachers. And it's not because gay kids are still being failed by cowardly school administrators and callous school boards and cowed teachers. And it's not because gay kids are still being bullied by straight kids who have been told that gay people are sick and sinful and that gay people, by simply existing, represent an existential threat to their families. And it's not because the religious right opposes all efforts to prevent anti-gay bullying in our schools and is pushing for new laws that create a special right for little religious bigots to brutalize gay children. And it's not because some gay kids have parents who subjected to years of psychological and spiritual violence before throwing them out and cutting them off.

No. It's my fault. And I should be arrested.

That makes no god damn sense.

Or, excuse me, it makes sense if the dude is thinking of some wacky Republican pastiche of what they think IGB is about instead of, you know, actually watching the videos that are freely available on the internet. So I guess there's that.

Wow! This self-hating "ex" homo finds that the It Gets Better Project causes gay teen suicide? So offering hope, sharing experiences, and offering moral support makes people suicidal?

What is this strange new form of newspeak is this guy ducktalking? George Orwell never imagined this in his novel "1984".
Also, arrested? For what? Trying to save LGBT people from becoming people like him?

I bet he's a youth pastor now . . .

What's the term? Transference? Is that the correct term to explain this process? (Fear and hate explain the madness, I know, but....)

Yeah, rational people like this. He makes it sound like being gay is like the Star Wars Force. "Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny", blah blah.

Thanks for linking this site. It's like a clearinghouse of stupid.

DL Foster is a sick, evil bastard who uses the pain and deaths of innocent LGBT kids to promote his hateful message. Once again, I wish I did believe in a God so that I could at least have the comfort of thinking that this SOB will get his just punishment when he dies.

DL Foster: "I think he should be arrested for... these kids to have this false promise without any sort of information on what is ‘it’ anyway?
I prefer to construe this narrowly as a relatively dimwitted individual (who may or may not be gay but probably is) struggling with the intellectual challenges of the indeterminate subject.

Dan could have called it the "Life Gets Better" project, but that would be "LGB" and that looks really gay.

Can we just forget about this Foster jagoff, and find out when Dan and Terry are going to get married in America? I mean I know they're Canadian married, but now it's legal in Washington state!! If Dan and Terry don't get American married, I"ll be disappointed.

By the way, Mr. Foster: People who love each other getting married? That's part of 'it'.

It's a clever variation on the "I know you are, but what am I" argument, the first example of which is mentioned by Aristotle in his treatise on rhetoric.

I'm actually interested in teh specific rationalization, which I couldn't follow: how exactly is it that telling gay kids things will get better increases the chance that they'll commit suicide? It wasn't obvious in the link (and I couldn't play the interview from where I am), so I'd really like to understand: what is the link he sees?

My guess is that he thinks gay kids who believe the IGB Project will refrain from seeking anti-gay therapy and so will go on having this "problem" -- i.e., he sees the IGB project as an attempt to convince "people with serious mental problems" (homosexuality) not to seek the help and therapy they need to go back to normal. Like having a project to convince potential serial killers or pedophiles not to try to get the treatment that might help them actually never kill or molest anyone.

Is that it? Is that the reason why he thinks Dan's project is "disturbing"?

(Other than that, I agree that the IGP project is disturbing the right wing because they see it really has a good chance of working. They're not stupid: they see the possibilities and implications.)

The right's sycophantic rejection of anything with the word "hope" in it has really gone too far. Yes, you're bitter about Obama winning. Yes, you're pissed that he used "hope and change" to win. That does not mean that everything containing the word "hope" in it is inherently evil.

I'm 14 years old and I want to kill myself and I'm a girl and I'm gay and people bully me and my parents don't give a crap about me so I said to my self there's nothing else to do in my life so I think I'll commit suicid
