After a week and a half of slowly closing the gap behind Shannon Braddock, Lisa Herbold officially took the lead today in the race for a seat representing West Seattle's District 1 on the Seattle City Council.

Herbold now leads Braddock by 27 votes with almost all of the ballots in that district counted. A few hundred ballots have been turned in but have signature issues; those might get counted later.

Herbold got 53 percent of today's ballots, which is an improvement over yesterday and a good sign for her. But if—when the final results are certified later this month—the two candidates finish this thing separated by fewer than about 125 votes, the race could still go into an automatic recount. What does all that mean? That things look good for Herbold today, but it's still not over.

It's a different story in southeast Seattle's District 2, where things appear to be over for Tammy Morales, who ran against incumbent Bruce Harrell. Almost every single ballot that's been certified has been counted there and Morales still trails Harrell by 357 votes. Even if all the ballots that haven't been counted (because of signature issues) go Morales's way, she can't overcome Harrell, according to the latest available numbers from the King County Elections Office. And that race isn't close enough for an automatic recount.
