A record-high 6 in 10 Americans support same-sex marriage and a similar share say individual states should not be allowed to define marriage as only between a man and a woman, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The national debate on same-sex marriage moves to center stage next week, when the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on whether state restrictions on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional.

This is the first major poll to find that support for marriage equality had broken the 60 percent barrier. The questions:

In other news: The country's most famous opponent of gay marriage—the founder of the National Organization for Marriage—predicted yesterday that the court legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states would lead to "the end of civilization and the beginning of an era in which Christians become a persecuted minority." Legal same-sex marriage in 37 states and civilization can juuuuuuust hold on. All 50? Time to stock up on MREs.
