Something like what Seattle is.
Something like what Seattle is. Charles Mudede

Seattle is mostly unremarkable as a city. It's not a thing to really look at and remember. It has a spirit that's closer to a wet stone than a sparkling jewel. Our city is for looking outward. It is a platform from which one sees the wonders that surround it. New York City is a place that looks inward. It has no outside. All eyes are inside or on the stage, which is Manhattan. Brooklyn is a front-row seat to this monumental event. Walking around Seattle is more like a hike up and down and around a hilly area, with here or there a view of distant things: the mountains, the volcanoes, the lakes, the floating countries of clouds. This outwardness is never returned or reflected. It diminishes in the wilderness.

Anyway, I have an exhibit opening tonight at Hedreen Gallery that attempts to think about Seattle. The exhibit includes original music by Tendai Maraire and Sean Ono Lennon, and was designed, for the most part, by the architect Jerry Garcia, with great support from Olson Kundig Architects. A city is something to always think about.
