LA Times is reporting that the man killed by the LAPD yesterday was an immigrant from Cameroon, a West African country. He lived in a tent. Some say he was killed because of his tent, which was up at a time of the day when tents are supposed to be down (between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.). The dead man is said to have gone by the name "Juju" and "Africa." According to a resident in the area, he had recently been released from a mental hospital and soon became a part of the largest homeless community in the US. (LA is one of the richest cities in the world—its GDP of $700 billion is nearly $200 billion more than the GDP of the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria.) According to Andy Bales, the president of the Union Rescue Mission, the dead man's "family had tried to get him to return" to Africa. You are right to blame the NRA, to blame police incompetency (which is mostly a result of mediocre training), and to blame America's indifference to mental illness. It's that simple.
