When you work for people stuck in the third century, you get screwed for living in the here and now. That she supported a religion that helped create an atmosphere of fear and hate says more about her than them.
2
Clearly that's supposed to be: "Catholic School Fires Teacher for Not Having an Abortion".
3
I forget Dan, why was Dave Segal fired?
4
From Nolo.com:

"Federal law also prohibits most employers from firing someone because that person is pregnant or has a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth."

Is this organization exempt from that for some reason?
http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/i…
5
@4:

It's the Catholic Church - they're exempt from just about everything.
6
@3: Huh?

@4: It's a religious organization.
7
Can't she sue them now? Pregnancy is protected by the EEOC.
8
Umm Dan this now Pope while more liberal is still a catholic pope, can't expect him to be a bleeding heart liberal. Still this was sad to see.
9
#1 Because she maybe didn't have a choice where she was hired, is her fault?

Nice blaming the victim, troll.
10
@6
Dan fired Segal about 8 years ago, and a year later after the news died down, they hired him again. You know, the flaky morality of the media, no big deal. I simply forget the juicy details.
11
@10 - was he pregnant?
12
@11
nice. pregnant with guilt. however the abortion seems to have been a success.
13
@10 - okay, I researched the Segal story. Whatever. But what on earth does that have to do with Dan's post about the pregnant teacher?

btw, the school this woman worked at is about 1 mile from the house I grew up in. Small world. And many Catholic minds are even smaller (though I'm married to an exception).
14
"Teacher is fired for being a lesbian."

Fixed that for you.
15
I agree with @2. Best and trolliest (and most accurate) headline would be: "Catholic School Fires Teacher Because She Did Not Have an Abortion."

The only real reason "for" the termination is the fact that she is gay, which isn't really news in the world of Catholic schools. But, the only reason they know about it is because she declined to have an abortion (or because they weren't flexible with their leave policy, which isn't as juicy).
16
@13
You researched the Segal story??? Wow, thank you for listening!! What did you find? What was the girl's name that was involved? Which clubs? Do tell!!

Oh btw, this has nothing to do with Dan's post, aside from him doing his puny I'm righteous Dan Savage routine talking about someone being fired.
17
@9 Wuh? That doesn't even make sense. Nonetheless, she was o.k. with Catholic schools as long as somebody else was being harassed out of job. As they have. And as they will be.
18
Catholic school I went to had a habit of having the pregnant, unwed students disappear once they started to show. I guess that extends up the chain of command.
19
@16 - what? What girl? What "clubs"? I just Googled Segal and firing and Stranger. It was some editorial conflict of interest thing. What do you know that you're not telling us?
20
@19 He doesn't know anything that he's not telling us. He's simply saying that Dan Savage having the power to fire and hire people means that he is not allowed to comment on the hiring or firing of any other organization, for reasons that I'm sure make complete sense to a poster who managed to somehow cobble together a functioning brain stem from spare kidney and bladder cells that he wasn't using.
21
I would bet if she were known to be heterosexual and had a pregnancy, she would have had no problem getting leave, although the Church would have been on her ass forever about her "sin" and would forever regard her child as a second-class bastard no matter what the reason for her pregnancy. But . . .

And, Dan? The only difference between New Pope and Natsy Pope is language -- the terms of the creed haven't changed a bit, just the way they're expressed. New Pope may be on the "who am I to judge" side in interviews when he's doing Church PR but he's still judging institutionally, where it counts.
22
I'm not a woman, but seems to me abortion has been around forever and is most sought by those women who have a price to pay for an unfortunate circumstance they HAVE to deal with, as opposed to the fathers who get to keep on truckin. So basically, this Catholic School is making a pretty strong case that this lady should have kept her mouth shut, got an abortion, and made sure the appearance of morality was maintained rather than the reality of it. Like so many, many women before. And isn't making everything appear perfect what it's really all about?
23
Wow, they can make brain stems from kidney and bladder cells now. Modern medicine. Bloody miraculous.
24
@20
couldn't have said it better myself, almost. i'm not saying Dan "is not allowed to comment."

What does "Welcome Thrillho" mean? Oh forget it, I'll remain ignorant to such childishness.
25
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministerial…

Essentially, if the woman from the story did anything related to a religious activity, than she can be fired for a discriminatory reason without recourse. Yay First Amendment?
26
Wait, "Thrillho" - you mean whoring for thrills? Something like this?
http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archive…
27
Some religious schools in Australia make their teachers sign some lifestyle contract. You know , married in a heterosexual relationship, practicing the religion. Maybe this teacher had to sign this sort of thing?
28
@20, 24, what are you guys talking about? It says here Segal was fired for leaking an album before its release...
http://lineout.thestranger.com/2006/08/j…
29
Oh, sunnuvabitch, ignore that. All wrong. The article is by Segal... but still, what are you talking about?
30
@28
interesting article. Segal writes "Swift justice," but if the British music mag had the ethics of The Stranger, they've probably already re-hired the douche.

I don't know the story too well. Ask Paul Constant, he could fictionalize it for you, would make a half-decent screenplay. Diamanda Galas doing the soundtrack, the works.
31
Terrible. Still, all I think when I hear stories like this is "why would anyone want to work for a cult?"

Please wait...
