I went to a parochial high school.

97% were Irish, Northern European or Italian with 3 African-Americans. (Not 3%...three total!)

So 27% non-white is a big improvement!
2
And since parochial/private high schools cost $8K to $25K or more per year, affluent white families will continue to ....... you can guess the rest.
3
@2
"White families will continue to
.."

Value education? Have a mother and father raising socially healthy children? Want their kids to have some kind of moral compass?

Or are you thinking they'll continue to avoid the glorification of mediocrity that passes for education in public schools? Maybe that they wish to have kids not subject to idiotic one size fits all policies for everything from curriculum to discipline?

Those who can afford and value education sufficiently to sacrifice some things to pay for private education aren't the problem. The problem is the mess public schools have become, forcing such families to make the choice at all.

But hey, you probably can't see that through the lens of 'white people and successful people suck!'
4
And to be clear- there are wonderful capable dedicated teachers and onsite administrators at public schools doing their level best to educate the next generation. They aren't the problem. They're the last best hope for kids whose parents can't afford private school, and for other kids whose parents just don't give a damn. They are heroes trying to make the world a better place one kid at a time, and God bless them for it.

It's the central office administration and the civil servants and the teachers unions that are the bottom feeding trash that make public education the mess it is.
5
@3, the two are closely related. Public schools are a mess BECAUSE affluent whites have fled them, for fear that their precious babies might come into contact with scary Negroes.

Private schools should be illegal.
6
@3,4 you don't know shit about shit. Way to sneak some racism in there though
7
THEN THEY AREN'T MINORITIES NOW ARE THEY?! And if they are still a minority then so are the generic -but not majority- whites.

Let's stop looking at the world throughout racial lenses. That means EVERYBODY.
8
and there goes Fnarf, preaching from Mt. Whitey again.
9
@6, I read 3,4 and really don't see any racism. Maybe you could explain where you see it? Analytically, don't bother to name call. I am curious.
10
@8, 'Whitey' ?! really.
11
@5,6

Here's a helpful tip. Not everything has to do with skin color. I can, for example, think Obama a less than useless president without caring if he's white, black, hispanic or asian.

Most people where I live privately educate. I have yet to meet a single one for whom the skin color of their children's classmates is an issue in any way.

Nor did I mention it.

Fighting real racism where it exists is admirable. Trying ad hominem attacks, especially baseless ones, is the ploy of a desperate or a stupid person.

And Fnarf? Absent abuse and within state and local guidelines for minimum standards (met by private schools and rarely by public ones) how I choose to educate MY children is none of your damn business? Clear? Nor, since I also pay for public schools in taxes, does it affect public school funding, which you leftists confuse with effectiveness. Throw enough of somebody else money at something and it gets better, you idiots believe against all evidence to the contrary.
12
"Private schools should be illegal."

Again Fnarf doesn't believe in the US constitution. Would prefer Cuba's.

Living North of the Ship Canal and south of 85th pretty much ensures you have good schools because of the quality of parents. Amazing what two parent households who value education accomplish in the exact same system. Plus North side schools cost less per student. Maybe we should get thank you cards instead of hate?
13
@9: Read it again: By completing the quoted sentence "'White families will continue to...'" with "Value education? Have a mother and father raising socially healthy children? Want their kids to have some kind of moral compass?" SB implies that these are things that white families do, in contrast to to non-white families who, one assumes, are led by single parents who don't value education and have socially unhealthy children with no moral compass.

Racist as all get out.
14
@11: "Nor did I mention [skin colour]."

Liar.

You talked about "white families" @3.
15
@7, that racial lens that so terrifies you is the only one that lets you see anything. To continue your analogy, what you are looking for is the "I see no color" lens CAP, not lens. Blindness is attractive to people who might not like what they're seeing, but it doesn't mean it's not there.
17
@14

I quoted the person you actually might reasonably call racist @2.

After all, isn't a blanket assumption of some shared quality, particularly a sinister one, based solely on skin color (in this case caucasian) a pretty good working definition of racism?
18
@11, it's not "somebody else's money". It's their own money. Everyone pays for schools. But some people feel that it's important to shit on the social contract and shit on their neighbors and withdraw their interest and attention from the workings of the society they live in.

We don't want your fucking money, asshole. We want your fucking kids, and we even want your fucking asshole face in the PTA. The fact that you'd rather send your kids off to get fucked in the ass by Father Murphy than play with some black kids is sad, for everyone. Your own kids especially.
19
@15, we don't see through the racial lens until we are taught. It is not blindness to see no color. It is a form hazy vision to see it where it does not belong and draw correlation that need not be drawn.
20
" are led by single parents who don't value education and have socially unhealthy children with no moral compass."

70% of African American students in Seattle schools come from sing parent households. 20% of white kids do. Less than 10% of Asian kids do. You'll notice success at school is inversely related to those numbers.

Also, SPS is a panic. Why? Because children of recent African immigrants do not have an achievement gap. Most come from two parent households that value education. Must be racism. Or something.

Seattle Times:

'Alarming' new test-score gap discovered in Seattle schools

African-American students whose primary language is English perform significantly worse in math and reading than black students who speak another language at home — typically immigrants or refugees — according to new numbers released by Seattle Public Schools.

District officials, who presented the finding at a recent community meeting at Rainier Beach High School, noted the results come with caveats, but called the potential trend troubling and pledged to study what might be causing it.

Michael Tolley, an executive director overseeing Southeast Seattle schools, said at the meeting that the data exposed a new achievement gap that is "extremely, extremely alarming."
21

"We want your fucking kids.". Well you, especially you and your ilk, you can't have them. They are a sacred responsibility my wife and I accepted, and frankly I wouldn't trust you with a puppy never mind the most precious things,in my life.

See, I want my children to grow into responsible capable, happy adults. I don't want them unto make mistakes, what parent does? But when they do, I want them to have the lessons and accomplishment only those who find their own solutions to their own struggles can. Blaming everybody else for their problems, assuming shared burdens where only ones they should shoulder exist- this doesn't strike me as a way to do that.

And please show me where (outside of a quote from your buddy) I mention color, never mind black kids.

22
I went to private school and very deliberately send my kids to public school. They have gotten a great education- on Queen Anne where the white affluent families contribute to the local school. To be honest- this is why I moved to this neighborhood. I live in a shitty apartment in order to afford the neighborhood by the way, another deliberate choice.
The real story is how the different public schools are not created equal. Just a few years ago the rules changed to make the children go to the local school versus being bussed across town- great for kids only if they live in a "good" neighborhood with active fundraising. The original bussing system was created for encouraging racial diversity, supposedly not relevant now but I'm not buying it.
One parent told me at a school related party how the local middle school up here was improving as evidenced by the fact that less people qualify for free lunch! I qualified at the time.
23
@21, your kids are going to turn out to be putrid little lumps of shit just like you. Count on it.
24
My comment was meant to be more about income demographics - the group that is statistically more likely to enjoy higher income could afford more expensive private education. But I suppose you could look at all groups with higher earnings, and then draw conclusions about who opts out of public education in favor of private.
25
"We want your fucking kids.".

Another brick in your wall Fnarf?
26
@ 21 "sacred" ROFLMAO

Children aren't fucking sacred. That's too funny.
27
@23

Suppose so. If we're doing our jobs as parents they will be like us in some ways and learn from our mistakes in others.

Just curious though, ol' buddy. Is a putrid lump of shit someone who pays his own bills rather than begging at the public trough? Is it someone who sees being a husband and father not a right or a given, but a continuing duty to the welfare of his family and the highest joy a man can feel? Or is it someone who, through discipline and hard work and mistakes weighed and learnt from helps keep the economy going? Is it keeping the filial and fraternal and amicable ties in his life firmly in sight?

Insults from you, pal, are like the highest compliments from someone with a grownup worldview. Thank you kindly.
28
"The real story is how the different public schools are not created equal."

they are in Seattle. Our northsdie schools get less per student than southend schools. We raise more in PTA funds but all the millions in city school levies all flow to troubled schools.

Again, you can lead a horse to water, you can't me them drink.

"The original bussing system was created for encouraging racial diversity, supposedly not relevant now but I'm not buying it. "

OK, enroll your kids at Rainier Beach HS then. Because you can and since that school is way under enrolled, they will get a slot. Be my guest. Or being a fucking hypocrite.
29
@26

Clearly that's how you feel, Mile High. Which is why I wouldn't trust your ilk with mine.
30
"Children aren't fucking sacred."

Isn't that what George Zimmerman said?
31
@ 29, but you WILL trust them to rapey priests? HAHAHAHAHA

SB is the gift that keeps on giving.
32
"WILL trust them to rapey priests?"

Catholics? Oh hell no. We've been trying to get rid of them and the centralized state running amok over individual rights since 1517.
33
I find the self serving justification for private schools to be funny and predictable. It usually goes like this:

> I send my kid to a private school, to get a better education.
>> Oh, the teachers are better?
> No, not the teachers, but the administration -- the process, the lack of a teachers union.
>> Huh, why is it then that some schools, especially in wealthy areas, do so well. For example Roosevelt is a fine school.
> Well, sure, the schools in the wealthy areas do great. But I don't live in a wealthy area, and I just read the test scores, and they don't look so good.
>> So, basically, the more wealthy kids that go to a school, the better the school is.
> Yeah, pretty much.
>> So a kid's success depends largely on parental involvement. Wealth is just one measure of it. Generally speaking, wealthier parents are more likely to be involved in a positive way in their kid's education.
> Yeah, that's right.
>> So, if you are involved in a positive way in your children's education, then your kids will do well?
> Right, absolutely.
>> Regardless of where they go to school?
> Yeah, no, wait. Yeah, they will do fine, but they will do better if they are surrounded by other kids who are also successful.
>> Other kids whose parents are involved in a positive way.
> Yeah, right.
>> Doesn't it make sense that a kid would benefit if he or she is surrounded by other successful kids that come from a variety of backgrounds?
> Sure
>> Like a public school
> Yeah, but none of those kids exist in my neighborhood.
>> You should get out more. Every school in Seattle has someone, somewhere, that is brilliant. Rainier Beach, Chief Sealth, you name it. There is some kid, probably from a poor background (but not necessarily) that is an overachiever. That is why Seattle public schools do so well in scholastic competitions (music, math, chess, debate, etc.).

34
With any luck the new America that rises out of the rubble of the old one will have a separation between School and State clause to be adhered to with the same ferocity as that of the one between church and state (and to the chagrin of those who love school and state but enforce church and state with ferocity).

Tit for tat, fair is fair.
35
@17: You quoted @2 and ran with it straight into racism. Yes, he brought up white people. You concluded his original thought with your own racist spin, describing the admirable characteristics you ascribe to white people - and by implication, which you appear not to ascribe to non-white people.

But by all means, continue to pretend you aren't a racist. Hey, why don't you ask your allegedly non-white alleged wife what she thinks of your post @3?
36
@35

Whatever.

Like the made up 'homophobia' when you clowns start hollering racist it's a sure sign you've got nothing else.

And allegedly my alleged wife judges me and everyone else by the alleged behavior they allegedly engage in rather than their alleged skin color. Allege.

You really haven't got a brain left in that so open mind, have you?
37
"Whatever... you clowns... you really haven't got a brain left."

As someone once said, "It's a sure sure sign you've got nothing else."
38
I wonder if SB means his kid(s) are privately educated in his Italian villa?

You know, when they're not out fishing with him and his non-white spouse.
39
@23 Oh IDK seems to me it is equally likely its kids, particularly if they are adolescents or older, roll their eyes and laugh behind its back. Except perhaps the gay/lesbian one who just wants to turn 18 and get the hell away.

You just know Subhumanblues has a gay/lesbian kid, god has a sick sense of humor like that.
40
I wouldnt let a creep like Fnarf within a 100 yards of my kids. Of course progressives like fnark want our kids - how else would they get brainwashed into being servants of the state, rather then being independent thinking contributors to society.

not to worry, kids like mine will will be signing the paychecks of kids from people like fnarfs.

and its obvious matt in denver doesnt have any kids. Otherwise, he would realize that kids ARE sacred and special.

hopefully he will never have any.
41
Seattleblues, I'm back from a fun little family vacation now. This is just a reminder that when I recently caught you lying through your keys your response was to complain that I don't focus the same scrutiny on people who don't lie on SLOG nearly as much as you do. If you have an ounce of intellectual honesty or a drop of moral integrity, you've kept them well-hidden from us marauding liberal barbarians.

@21: Fnarf was rudely asking for your social participation in the educational sphere of parenting, presumably under the logic of "it takes a village to raise a child".

@36: You say that he's got no point, but YOU'RE the one saying "[w]hatever" to a post that was actually quite well-worded and to-the-point. You're a disgrace to humanity's intellectual tradition.
42
@27: You do realize that you just described Dan Savage don't you?

Please wait...
