There is never a time when a big cat is wrong to attack a human. Not a jackass sticking her fingers through a zoo cage, not a suburbanite trying to claim more land for a new suburb, not a cattle farmer in south Asia.

I spent 15 minutes hanging out with the Woodland Park Zoo's jaguar keeper while I worked for the zoo store one summer. And after he so proudly showed me the wiffle ball that Gordo made out of his toy (a hollow ball made from the same material as plastic cutting boards), all I can say is that this woman had to be a blithering idiot. She should be happy she didn't lose at least a whole hand.

Petting a housecat uninvited could get you nipped, clawed and damaged too.

After hours of licking and styling to get every hair just right, the last thing any cat wants is some stranger touching them, messing the fur and leaving that awful human smell on them.

I used to work for the zoo. At training we were told to be VIGILANT, as there actually exists some thrill seekers who always go to zoos try to get inside the enclosures with kodiacs, lions, tigers, polar bears, crocodiles etc. We were told to go after them and distract the animals to try to save them. I remember thinking: Yeah, suurrreee, that'll happen, we'll just jump right in and offer ourselves to the nice lioness to save the Darwin rejects.
