In 1940s parlance, Artie Shaw was a heel. Nowadays we'd just call him an asshole but I like the specificity of "heel". He completely fucked over Judy Garland early in her career.
@2, it's a remarkable photo, but no still picture can possibly capture the magnetism of Ava Gardner. You have to see her move, and hear her talk. Watch "The Killers" or "The Barefoot Contessa" or [low throaty noise] "The Night of the Iguana" sometime. Even pure camp like "Mogambo" is pretty hot, though I missed a couple of scenes when my glasses steamed up.
Is there any actress today with as much pure sex in her face? Angelina Jolie? Don't make me laugh. Mila Kunis? Jennifer Lawrence? Scarlett Johansson? Emma Stone? Alison Brie? Nope. Sharon Stone in the 80s? Not even close.
@4: Frank Sinatra followed Eva Gardiner to the set of Mogambo and managed to make an even bigger pest of himself than usual. His carved initials EG with a heart and the date are still visible in the secret mafia tunnels underneath Cal Neva casino on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.
@4 Fnarf,
I agree with you. You should see her in "Bhohani Junction" (1956) where Gardner portrays a Irish(Anglo?)-East Indian woman. Not only is she gorgeous, she delivers a fine performance as well.
I think she had the triple whammy in American cinema, a great figure, acting talent and a face that exuded sex. I believe one of her spouses was Frank Sinatra.
It's been said one way or another, "one can like the art (music) but not like the man". Indeed, I have some recordings of Artie Shaw.
BTW, Ava Gardner in her prime was hot. Wow! What a sultry look in that photo.

@8, he was, and she drove him mad, which is a fine accomplishment.
