I used to work at a nursing facility and watched this happen once a week during music therapy time. The therapist would play music for the residents from their younger years and they'd start singing along, recall events from that era, even dance. For a short time, we'd get some insight into what these patients were like in earlier years. One woman who couldn't even remember her name nor recognize her family could play entire piano concertos - we found out she'd been a concert pianist before dementia set in. The power of music is amazing!
(Yet we continually cut more and more music from our schools to be replaced by testing...fuck you Arne Duncan and GW Bush!)
