Oral or perhaps oodles of saddlebacking.

RE the ash trees: they are already wiped out here in SW Ohio. Two 80-year old trees in our yard bit the dust this year.

Hobby Lobby was a huge blow to religious freedom. Now the company that employs you gets to privilege its religious beliefs over yours. The right wingers who are celebrating this are too stupid to grasp the long term implications.

Canadian? Jared Mathew must be freezing. Get that boy a flannel shirt.

@2, Indeed.

Every time they win at imposing their beliefs on others, or weakening the separation of church and state, they are opening the door for their own persecution in the future. When Islam becomes the majority in some locations and these people have to send their kids to schools where they will have to pray to Mecca, or their bosses impose some Islamic rules on their workplace you will hear all sorts of crying and complaining from them, and they will need to be reminded that they did this.

They assume they will always have the power, but they are mistaken. One day they will be on the other end receiving the treatment they opened the door to with these law suits.

Based on my own visual impressions when seeing a gyno sporadically in the 60s and more often from the 70s, I think it's important to remind everyone that the specialty is OB-GYN. Nowadays, people tend to forget about the obstetrics portion.

All those many decades ago, I remember sitting in waiting rooms that were full of pregnant women. I also remember extra long waits because the doctor had been called unexpectedly into the delivery room. With the advent of oral contraceptives and a drop in the birth-rate, women didn't need to visit their doctors as often. So, in order to try to make up for the drop in income, doctors decided to impose the condition that they wouldn't renew contraceptive prescriptions without an annual physical including pelvic exam. And it worked as women had no other options (not so true these days as there are more longer-lasting contraceptives available). This trend was most evident in countries where fee-for-practice is common.

"Fuck you, you stupid beetle"? I think not. How about fuck you, you careless humans who probably imported the beetle larvae as stowaways in pallet wood or furniture.

reading is fundamental::

"It’s important to note that a different ecosystem is not the same as no ecosystem. When ash trees and hemlocks die, they are replaced by other kinds of trees. Over time, a new environmental system takes root. Few people living today remember when the Northeast was covered in forests of American chestnut. That species all but died out more than half a century ago from a series of fungal infections. Today, the forests and the life they harbor are very different; in many cases, hemlocks replaced the chestnuts. And now something else will replace the hemlocks."

If every woman who could vote voted, none of this would be happening. In fact, I'd bet most of the people complaining about Hobby Lobby don't bother to vote.

@2, @4, that has already happened at least once:
GOP legislators in Louisiana have realized to their horror that their bill to provide vouchers for private religious schools can actually be used by Muslims.

@10: Lower biodiversity is generally a bad thing. When those trees die out, new taxa don't spring into existence to replace them; their niches are just divvied up by previously-existing similar organisms.

Please wait...
