bawk bawk bawk im charles mudede and if this country were a socialist commune like I want bawk there wouldnt be any weapons around bawk bawk and people would never kill anybody else bawwwwwk
So far the Times report is the a dispute between a passenger and a fare enforcement officer led to a sheriff's deputy being called. The deputy shot and killed the passenger.
No details right now about how dangerous the passenger may have been.
"At some point one of the men pulled out a handgun and the deputy shot the man."
If true, that's a little more than fare aversion, don't you think? Some jerk was riding on public transit with a gun. That's bad enough. But then this brainiac decides to pull it on a cop? What did he think would happen? A coffee klatch?
Again, if this account is true, then good riddance.
@3 Ok. You got your facts out. Fine, go ahead and opine. Happy now?
@14 If the guy had a gun and was simply trying to get home to cook dinner for his aging mother or to volunteering at a dog shelter, then it would make a huge difference.
Wow, Sound Transit Light Rail must be warzone horrible if a man isn't secure enough with the company of two other men to ride it that he needs to bring a gun along in daylight hours.
@15, 18: The moment he pulled a gun on someone, the hospital, prison, or morgue was where he was headed. It just so happened that his number came up "morgue".
I couldn't have said it better myself, but there is something that bothers me about stories like this on the SLOG.
If the guy who'd pulled a gun on the cop had been a cute, white hipster who used to cook at a hipster restaurant in Ballard and happened to be a woefully cute but misunderstood junkie, I'm guessing there would be some sort of outcry here...
Charles always has such nice things to say about public transit. I wonder how a train that goes from SoDo through the Valley ended up with an armed, possibly non-fare paying hoodlum on it. The guy probably had a valid concealed carry permit too, because gun laws are effective with criminals.
1 down oh so many more to go. Good job deputy. To all you people crying foul come down and hang out at Tukwila or anywhere along MLK for a bus or a train at night. If the cops are so bad who the fuck are you going to call when you're getting jumped or mugged down there.
5280 dear, in your rush to be a maudlin besieged defender of the poor beleaguered second ammendment, you failed to notice that most of the commenters really don't have an issue with this person being shot. The troll, as usual, is all over the place but if you turn him off, the registered commenters aren't all that worked up.
There's enough opportunities in life to be a victim without having to make them up. That's something you Tories need to learn.
@25, I and/or one of two previous generations of my family have lived and worked late nights in Tukwila/Seatac. None of us have ever been mugged, and we're as lily white as they come. I've almost been murdered within 3 blocks of Westlake Mall. Tukwila/Seatac? That's tame. I'll walk my 5 year old down those streets, no problem.
I have trouble believing the authoritarian's report on this event for one single reason. Against the law, I've seen Securitas Security Services, both fare enforcement and general security, openly carrying. I've seen them put their hand on their weapon during fare evasion checks to intimidate people. I'd be willing to put money on one of these Fare Evasion officers being the one who shoved bullets into this person.
@21: I think the cop who shot the "cute, white hipster" was perfectly justified. If you're a law enforcement officer pursuing a suspect and the guy lunges at you with a bladed weapon, you shoot for center mass with the weapon in your hand (be that a Taser or a firearm). We can't demand that our police take the several seconds to decide whether lethal force is absolutely needed; if they are in plausible danger of serious or fatal injury at the hands of a criminal, they defend themselves first. I have no love for the Monday-morning-quarterbacking of people who think that he was wrong to fire those shots.
Here's my problem with this. The original witness statements that state that the person who was shot was already pressed up against the glass and being cuffed are disappearing.
The original news reports that talk about eyewitness statements reporting the same as mentioned above and seeing the KCSO deputy step up and put the gun against the guys stomach and firing 3 times are starting to going poof as well.
Something isn't quite right here...and there was no mention of a gun until long after, and witness statements were that the alleged fare-jumper was unarmed.
It's not past the SPD or KCSO to use a filed-off drop gun. It wouldn't be their first or last time doing so.
I'm not saying this is how things went down...but there's something seriously off about this story...and not just here on The Stranger.
@snokes I was told he pulled out a gun and the sheriff shot him. Not letting my personal feelings or relation cloud my judgement so I didn't blame the sheriff for this. my family wasn't allowed to see my cousin and instead gave us a picture showing him bruised all over his face. i also heard from witnesses saying he was already pinned and cuffed which would explain all the bruises. I just want to know the truth and if killing my cousin was in self defense or not.
fact: 1 person is dead and a 2nd is wounded.
No details right now about how dangerous the passenger may have been.
Don't fare enforcement travel in trios?
Damn freeloading tech yuppies, they're ruining Seattle!
About an hour.

Multiple witnesses. Sounds like a perfectly legal shooting.
Consider this moocher's ticket to be punched.

No?
Crickets chirping?
Oh, well. No hypocrisy here on the SLOG...
That "crickets" imagery you use is stunningly original.

Like I said to our dear 5280, stop being a victim.
Like it or not, CPN is dead on.
Cute white gay local guy threatens a cop and is shot, there is outrage and calls for investigation.
But when groups from other demographics get shot in the same circumstances, no one cares.
So, no one cares about the situation here, but maybe they will if they find out he was "like them?"
That is hypocrisy.
I don't. Black or white, you pull a gun on a cop, you get your ticket punched.

--Sincerely,
a cute white gay guy.
