OMG! My sister's friend's cousin heard about someone who totally tried to commit suicide after seeing sooo many negative posts on her Facebook. Someone should, like, do something about it. #CancelFacebook
I'm surprised this story hasn't grown to discuss the obvious next step, which is to learn how to best manipulate news feeds to increase the effectiveness of ads. It's the only reason FB would be doing this kind of work.
Weird because the newsfeed on my FB page tends to have the opposite affect on me. The more 'We're Having Another Gorgeous Hawaii Vacation' posts I see, the more depressed I get.
@6 presumably there is some association between happiness and the efficacy of advertising. Depending on the ad, it could be a positive or negative association.
I couldn't care less about Facebook's role in all this. They are in the business of selling access to their users. However, from a scientific point of view this is absolutely not an ethical way to conduct a human trial. A clickwrap agreement is simply not informed consent. The ethics boards at the schools where these scientists work will hopefully bring sanctions against them and the journal will pull the research.
six months Facebook free and still alive to tell the tale. I missed a couple of parties and no longer have any idea what is happening in Idaho. Otherwise, life is pretty good without it.
And they didn't even really get results, because their methods were unsound and far from rigorous.
