Soccer isn't "foreign", it's international. Most of our sports can be traced back to England, but the difference with soccer is that we play by the international rules rather than our own American version.

The U.S. is simply big enough to have our own sports leagues and big national events like the Super Bowl. Most countries are considerably smaller so their national leagues need an international arena in which to compete at a high level.

I love the idea of international sports. It is a far healthier way to show nationalism than military conquest. The Olympics and the World Cup help show us that we all share a lot more in common than we sometimes realize.

That Coulter article was some poorly thought-out click bait. I know her entire reason for existing is to troll humanity, but this was some lackluster trolling even for her. Really phoning it in. There's even a Michael Jackson death joke.

Justification for using imperial over metric is that a foot is the length of a human foot? That would be an enormous foot and it's horrible reasoning.

It's possible that the article was actually written by a tweaked and corrupted version of one of those news aggregator robots.
3
I love the Coulter article, because everything she says is the opposite of reality (natch). Soccer is growing up in America. If Ann had a functional brain she'd be rallying for America to get better than everyone else, not give up in defeat.
4
@2 my shoes are almost exactly a foot, convenient for me to 'measure' things. Obviously metric is still better in every way...

The stupidest part is that soccer was brought here not by those terrible, awful, no-good post-1965 immigrants but by previous waves of immigrants -- the ones who built this country. Our great-grandfathers, in fact, despite what she says. The early days of US soccer are filled with teams like Brooklyn Hakoah, Bethlehem Steel, Maccabi Los Angeles, Philadelphia Ukrainians, Brooklyn Italians, Brooklyn Hispano, New York Hungaria, Sayles Finishing Plant FC, and so on.

Coulter knows absolutely nothing about American history.
6
all of the causes this guy pretends to care about are made increasingly more difficult to obtain by the advance of general globalism and centralization.
7
@5, you give her too much credit. Coulter knows absolutely nothing about anything. She is a professional troll. I doubt she herself believes half the garbage that falls out of her mouth.
8
Without fear and lies, Republicans have nothing. We can't become a part of the world soon enough for our own good.
9
Coulter was just joking. I assume it was especially written for Sloggers to talk about, maybe ever at request of Stranger mngt.

She has been in decline and needed some goosing and we gave her exactly what she asked for.
10
"Coulter's thinking is irrational, the fear she feels is not. We can no longer pretend to be the center of the universe."

I would argue that the thinking and the fear are equally irrational. Moreover, if the thinking were more rational, the fear might not be there at all.

Billions of people in hundreds of nations around the world wake up each day with the knowledge that they do not live in the world's premier superpower. Yet they find--somehow--that the earth still turns.
11
@9: Coulter was just joking.

Indeed, her whole career is a satire of conservative idiocy, kind of like Colbert without the wink-wink, nudge-nudge.
12
@4 Yeah, now that you mention it, my shoe is 11". Weird, they seem so much smaller from up where my head be at.

See, this is why I have always preferred cubits!
13
The proportion of people who don't give a shit about soccer is in fact about the same in the US and France/England: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/11/upshot…

Coulter acts like a moron but she is a dangerous demagogue for distorting reality in a way that is believable to many.
14
@ 1, the history of our home grown leagues is completely tied to the fact that all those sports and leagues developed here instead of internationally. Imagine if baseball had been as popular in Japan and Latin America in the late 19th Century as it was in the USA at that time. The World Series might have wound up being more like the World Cup instead of the FA Cup.

@ 5, you probably are aware that the USA finished third overall in the 1930 World Cup, but most people are not.
15
@ 12, you mean she can pander to the assumptions and beliefs of her audience? That's nothing new. She isn't as dangerous as the poor educational standards that permit someone like her to thrive.
16
Ann Coulter is still alive? The poor thing must be in her 80's.

At least she looks better than Phyllis Schlafly.
17
Interesting that Mudede should finish on an astronomy reference. I was thinking that if Coulter responds to Mudede (not that she ever would), it will solidify the binary system of inanity.

Please wait...

and remember to be decent to everyone
all of the time.
