I wonder how many readers here had ever heard of Andre the Giant. (That is a factual remark. It is not sexist, nor ageist.) His career _ended_ in 1992. That is 22 years ago.
I don't have a TV (scared to watch) but I wonder if they still have pro wrestling.
It's obviously not as big as it was in Andre's day, but that only enhances the cult-like element that makes it so endearing (admittedly, I'm not really a fan at all, but have pretty good friends who still go to matches regularly.) I'd also highly recommend the Mickey Rourke film The Wrestler from a few years ago to anyone who's not yet seen it.
It wasn't "the randomness of genetics", Andre the Giant had a pituitary tumor that that secreted high levels of Human Growth Hormone, causing a condition called Gigantism in his teenage years and Acromegaly later in life. He chose not to seek treatment and as a result died young, in his 40's of heart failure, a complication of the disease.
