Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers on Slog and at The Stranger.
Re: possible new logging rules, the KUOW story missed a point that Brendan brought out in his Slog post and print story: Any logging permit application not reviewed by the DNR within 30 days is automatically approved.
All other regulatory fiddling is meaningless unless that fact is addressed. It's interesting, and perhaps telling, that both Goldmark and Goldman could have highlighted the issue and did not.
Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend actually is really disgusting. Every time we watch it we are disgusted. Just looking at those lips pucker up and make contact turns everyone's stomach. The worst part is when we pause the video right as their lips make contact. It's so horrible that we feel sickened and can't stare at the freeze frame for much more than a minute at a time.
Goldmark's promises to do more intensive screening for high hazard areas mean nothing unless they are accompanied by funding for the agency that is supposed to accomplish this.
One reason why there are long lines in eastern Ukraine is because there are far fewer polling locations than in normal elections. In Mariupol it is reported that there are 4 polling stations open, normally there are 239!
The "referendum" is a complete sham.
The ballot boxes are see-thru, there are no voter rolls being used, there are armed separatists at many of the voting locations and there are reports of people voting multiple times and of foreign journalists voting.
Please learn about the elections before Putin invades the country in a few months.
@13 Even though you are an unregistered troll, the fact that you would think Chomsky was "in bed" with the Khmer Rouge demonstrates your supreme idiocy...or you're actually Slavoj Zizek.
That's because he was a failure as a scientist and engineer.
Although known for propounding that language has structure, common throughout all, he never found what it was (if it even exists).
He was trying to not only prove that this common substrate existed, but to use it as a basis for natural language understanding in computers.
He was part of the zealous AI movement in computers (Minsky, McCarthy, Papert, et. al.) who thought they would have machine intelligence solved in the 1950s and 60s using techniques like first order logic.
@16, he did pretty well after all is said and done, but that article made it sound like he was dropped down a bit in the draft because of his gayosity.
āI just know with this going on this is going to drop him down,ā an NFL scout anonymously told Sports Illustrated. āThereās no question about it. Itās human nature. Do you want to be the team to quote-unquote ābreak that barrier?āā

Believe it or not, it is real progress.

Serious question:
How does a guy who is first team All American (I believe he was) become a 5-7th round draft choice?
Calling him a "failure" seems a bit of an over-statement.
