At one time I lived just down the road from Langhorne, in a place called Bensalem, PA.
It was the ultimate suburb. Completely separated from all traditional cities. Completely new. The mall was the center of town.
I stayed at a place called the Country Lights which described itself as having Apartment Chalets. The sq. footage per room was enormous. The several swimming pools were fantastic.
I wonder why I ever left since I have found no place that was quite the bargain as there.
And now they are showing themselves to be progressive leaders.
I've been waiting a looooong time for the older generation to die off so we can finally fix things... Somehow the more things change, the more they stay the same (unless they get worse, of course***). Such is reality when living in a Dark Age.
They could follow in the footsteps of pretty much all sports journalists during my lifetime and make their coverage so replete with idioms and sports colloquialisms only diehard fans will know what they're even writing about. Seriously you can read another town's paper—especially college coverage—and sometimes not even know what sport the team plays.
community members have expressed that the term “Redskins” is not offensive and is a source of school pride.
Who the fuck are these losers that take a stance of "well, I don't go here, and I don't got kids there, but I think they should keep using the word Redskins cause it makes me happy"?
I've always been fascinated with this issue. Team names try to reflect the culture and history of the area. Predatory animals are much preferred, but there aren't that many of them that people encounter, so those names don't have much resonance. And what do you do then, when you look into your area's history and there's nothing there? America has very little in the way of history compared the rest of the first world. What was here hundreds of years ago? Native Americans. The names continue to exist for rivers, cities, places, etc. That's the bedrock underneath the sandy topsoil history of Europe's castaways who came here. That is what is mined for when Americans try to find something 'historically identifying.'
I'm not advocating for the use of those names, and the term 'Redskins' *is* racist, pure and simple. I just find it fascinating how Americans, who are usually loathe to look too deeply into the actual history of the Native Americans, continue to turn to them to find some kind of identity, some connection to being on this continent.
I've been thinking for a while that it should be written either as "R-word" or "R-------," as in, "The Dallas Cowboys play the Washington -R-------' this Sunday."

** LGBT rights being an exception

An R-word fan.
