O'Bama should take over for Letterman - he's a natural and had mostly good material. His referencing Boehner's trouble with republicans as evidence "orange is the new black" was one of the best lines of the evening.
McHale however - nervous and stumbling through mean spirited crap off hand-held cards - bombed terribly. Not that the occasion isn't impossibly difficult to rise to; Steven Colbert similarly bombed a few years ago. But McHale's shtick hit a new low and may have permanently damaged his stock. Awful.
I don't like that Obama can't make fun of himself. He just doesn't let his guard down and his comments on others just seem catty, the opposite of magnanimous. I support his policies, but his lack of self deprecating humor is a weakness.
The spell is broken; you realize that Community isn't funny either. You are free to stop being a dull white person and just admit you put up with a lot of mediocre and just plain bad TV to fill your idiot box addiction.
@1, indeed. I was gonna say he should make the first ever transition from sitting president to stand-up comedian, though taking over for Letterman works too. I still think his take down of Trump from a couple years ago was funny as hell and not just because the target was so clearly (and deservingly) humiliated.
Paul, you are right; Joel was awful. Reading from cards? He just seemed like a random person who got up and not a professional actor.
"I don't like that Obama can't make fun of himself." What? He made a lot of digs at himself and laughed when others did as well.
Biden/Dreyfus were very good.
Best line of the night? Obama opining on how his numbers with the public are down but Boehner's are worse. He said, "I guess orange really is the new black."
I think one of the givens of the event is that the "host" shouldn't outshine POTUS's performance. It is a sacrificial challenge afforded those so desperate they have nothing to lose - one of the reasons Colbert was so controversial when he did indeed upstaged the President. Major stars with mainstream appeal routinely decline it. McHale was the perfect choice and performed in accordance with his questionable talent, putting the retrospective focus on how much better POTUS was ;)

I agree that no one will ever top Colbert's performance, but the Boehner joke was one of my favorites in a long time. That was great.
