novyy voyna. (новый война)

Translating treacle @1, that would be "new war." Well-put. Forgive me for being a grammar geek, but I believe that would be novaya voyna.

What's so frustrating to me now is that we in the West should be turning the screws economically on Russia. And yet there seems so little appetite toward standing up to a bully. Our American apathy and ineffectualness is one thing, but then there are the Europeans, who have much closer economic ties with Russia. The Germans especially could really stick it to Russia, but that would require some sacrifice on Germany's part. God forbid the bookkeeper-in-chief Angela Merkel should try to persuade her people to put some real European values like democracy and self-determination and territorial integrity ahead of maximizing GDP growth at all times.

Anyway, more dispatches from Chris Collison, please! It's a good thing Chris is still in Kiev, considering how the insurgents in Slovyansk have imprisoned journalist Simon Ostrovsky.

I recently re watched Michael Palin's "New Europe" series, filmed in 2006. In the Ukraine segment his guide in Kiev gushed about gaining independence from Russia. He Crimean guide thought independence was ridiculous.
It certainly gave me a different perspective on the situation, and made the recent vote in Crimea seem somewhat believable.

It's a little disingenuous to throw in the whole "Jews must register" thing as a consequence of Russian incursion. It was shown to be pretty demonstrably anti-Russian propaganda (it'd be akin to Texas Border Patrol types passing out flyers for a fake Spanish-language public school as a protest against NAFTA). Including it here on the opposite side of the ledger is... Well, it's what I might expect from the SPD Guild newsletter

@5 you have to be kidding. "I haven't seen any actual evidence it's fake"?? Some worldview.

Please wait...
